Seen this today in Tesco rathfarnham.
Two people with a shopping trolley each of clear commercial bags of plastic bottles.
Got in just in front of them.

Still have to print off a receipt and walk around with cash that I’ll have to drive to the bank to deposit which is crazy.

Mmmm, I think there's two hopes for that.

    Bob Hope and no hope.

You do realise there are other options on what to do with that cash?????

For a scheme that's supposed to help 'clean' up the litter problem I see very little improvement around my local rural roads. There are still plenty of plastic bottles and cans littering the verges around here. I noticed a car going slowly past my house one day, do a u-turn and drive, again slowly, past before pulling into the verge further up. Out jumped the driver with a bag, they picked something up and into the bag. I thought that they were litter lifting and though 'fair play', less for me to pick up. The next thing they picked something up, looked at it and threw it back. This went on for a couple minutes. They were searching for returns and throwing back the others.

If there is one positive to the scheme it is that it can help keep the streets a little cleaner.

Though it can also make them worse. People emptying bins into the street looking for cans and leaving an absolute mess behind them.

If we could make most litter "returnable" for money in some form or other, that would be a good thing.

The litter problem would become self policing.

Yes, I'd say the price rise is baked in now, no matter what happens to the scheme.

You could put it in a charity box for the RNLI or some other good cause of your choice.

Or keep it handy for the next power cut when card terminals go down.

I certainly do but I resent not being able to just put the money back in my account via my phone or card.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,097 ✭✭✭✭tom1ie

    No.

I would like it back in my account.
I’m well prepped for the next power cut 😉

An earlier poster referred to the Irish scheme already being hailed a huge success in the UK.

I expect more of this, just like we were told other countries have perfect DRS, the Brits will be told we are DRS champs too. And of course we will have Foley repeating the platitude for the Irish audience on shows like Claire Byrne- how we crave the veneration of the Brits!

I wonder to myself if Foley is quietly manoeuvring himself into contention for the top job in the UK? Hmmm.

I get you being a bit upset over no bank transfer on refunds but making special trips to the bank seems like a lot of bother.

I use a card for almost everything but would keep a bit of cash in reserve.

Of course your other option is to buy something in the shop and use voucher as part payment.

I return the plastic bottles in Dunnes in Donaghmede (indoor machine), take the receipt & get them to put the balance onto one of their in-store gift voucher cards. Just keep topping it up over the weeks. When the balance has built up enough I take it upstairs to the clothing/homewares department & splurge it there.

I haven't posted here in a while, as I've been reluctantly using the scheme, including driving miles to collect a disabled family members returns to get their money back. My nearest machine was replaced recently and is much better that the one previous.

But lo and behold, lately problems starting again. Barcodes not being recognised despite the exact same can going in before, and then this morning, put in 3.80 worth and machine stopped. Error message said bin full contact staff. The screen reset to zero and no receipt.

In fairness the staff gave me back the money from the till when I told them what happened but I'm guessing that's at their own expense.

More lovely delicious free money for Return.

Dear Return, once again I ask, what's the update on people who are housebound or unable to take part in this? Over a year in there really are no excuses any more after your false promises in the media.

And I ask the question here because as I've posted here before, when I asked them directly previously they essentially told me to piss off.

Still not engaging. Still getting rid of all waste in the local landfill every 5/6 weeks. Cost me a tenner last time (including 2 black bags of cut grass).

I am curious about the money sitting in limbo though. In theory the cash is available though but I doubt it's sitting in a safe somewhere. What happens to the interest on it? Who gets that? Probably a decent return on 54 mil (it won't be sitting in a pittance deposit account anyway).

I haven't been in Lidl for a few months before today. I went in to get some of their Magnum type choc ices. As good as Magnum in my opinion, and cheaper.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that their own brand Soda Water, One Litre is down to 47 cents. Was 25 cents before the Russia war, as were all the own brands. Went up to 75 cents gradually, before DRS. But has been coming down in increments, settled at 59 cents for maybe a year, and after DRS started.

Of course there is the 25 cent deposit, but that is labelled on the shelves, and appears on the receipt. So there can be no confusion about what is the item price and what is the returnable deposit.

2.50 for the bottles of lucozade that went from 2.00 to 2.20 when DRS first went in. (Look back on earlier posts for me on this for proof, the check the labels in the shops for verification)

I know cos the prize is part of the labeling.

Noticed this over the past month or so. That's some price inflation in the course of less than 18 months. Then of course you have your DRS few on top of that.

I've also noticed the 'small' bottles of coke hitting 2.85 in a couple of the local 'convenience' stores, bring it to 3.00 including the DRS. Obviously you canb get these cheaper elsewhere or in bulk but even those have been creeping up using various stealthy methods(less cans on multi packs etc etc)

I dunno maybe others don't see these price rises but like many others I have reduced significantly my intake of these types of drinks which TBF is no harm for me.

But that could easily have been done by sticking a larger sugar tax or DRS fee on them.

Someone laughed at me earlier in this thread when I suggested taxing drinks that come in plastic to bring their price to a fiver each to reduce the demand for them, that's happening anyway.....

It's a golden age for Soda Water drinkers though. Absolute winners.

Well I have cash reserves as it is and I don’t want to buy anything in the shop- I want my refund back on to the medium I used to purchase the product in the first place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,041 ✭✭✭✭elperello

Of course the shops have a vested interest in getting you in the door to buy something.

I think the option for card refund should be there alongside the voucher.

Another improvement would be a limit on the number of returns to divert the "big bags" returners to bulk machines. But then you 'd need more of the bulk machines.

It's a bit much picking stuff up and throwing it back you'd hope he'd have a bit more civic responsibility.

At same time the main blame is on the people who littered in the first place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,097 ✭✭✭✭tom1ie

Exactly the whole thing is to make it as easy as possible for you to spend more of your hard earned already taxed money.

It’s like many of the return machines- out of order.

DRS makes people think its fine to keep using more plastic. RVMs are marketed as magical recycle portals. Re-Turn.ie STILL has "Achieve EU Recycling Targets" on the home page. A blatant lie that had been exposed several times here. EU targets are for collection as stated in the legislation.

The only reduction is what people get for their hard earned money if they dont want to engage with this scheme. If they do maybe they'll get their own money back if they're lucky. Its been said over and over here. This scheme is nothing to do with the environment. Its about letting producers carry on same as they were before DRS.

The price of soft drinks has gone up significantly in the past 18 months of so. DRS, Sugar tax, global inflation. 4 x 500ml Lucozade Sport is 5 euro plus 60 cent DRS. 5.60. For 1 euro more you can get a 4 pack of beer.

    That's not unique to Re-turn.

The whole retail industry is designed to get you to spend your hard earned already taxed money.

Actually they don't care how you got the money or if you paid tax at all as long as they get a chunk of it.

On the machines, maybe I'm just lucky but I:m just back from a Supervalu and on the way in the RVM was full.

On the way out after picking up six items it was emptied and working again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,097 ✭✭✭✭tom1ie

What did ya do with the receipt? Cash it or did ya put it off the cost of the six items? Or hang onto it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,041 ✭✭✭✭elperello

€2.45 in my wallet with the debit card.

Ready for my next foray into the retail wars tomorrow 🙂
