Could they not have something better than 2 semi-finals and a final?

I think they should either have one marathon session, or two or three days long but all being part of the same competition.

What is even the theory behind the semi-final? Obviously they get more money from more televotes, but it's not as if they're competing in sports or something where it's going to be a different level of performance every time and anything can happen on the day - it's pretty much going to be almost the exact same performance and them performing better or worse isn't going to change a thing about the result anyway, people are voting for whether they like the song or not. So what's the justification? There's none, it's just bollocks is what it is, it just sounds superficially like something reasonable that could be in a competition.

Maybe they could expand into something completely different. Maybe they could put dancing in it as well, call it the Eurovsion Song and Dance Contest. How about a major record deal for the winner with the intent of them becoming a global success - it's what it's fundamentally supposed to be about, right?

I feel like they're getting a little too comfy now because it's done really well online for two reason 1) interest outside of europe caused many who could never watch it before to start watching it and 2) it's a perfect format for shitposting online while watching it. This was never possible in the old days.

Both of these are going to wear off over time, particularly the first one. If however they can make global successes of the acts - which seems very doable with the money and publicity they get - then more people will be interested as they would like to be there at the very beginning for some major worldwide success. And only costing them one night of their time - unlike reality music tv shows that get dragged on for months.

There's definitely potential to do a lot more than it is now.

the viewers are more like 600M worldwide which still is impressive, and I have to correct you here, there is just over 8 billion people worldwide

But that’s exactly it…. Ireland was bland and run of the mill.

I don't think there's a standout winner tonight, can see it being very tight going to the televotes. Will make for for good viewing but the quality also seems to be well down from last year across the board, I don't think any song this year would make the top 5 from last year

If the song was good enough it would get the votes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,440 ✭✭✭mulbot

Absolutely, actually the more I listen to it after hearing the other songs, the worse it sounds.

Maybe it's bias because it's one of my favourites but I feel like everyone is sleeping on Italy. They almost always do well in televote, even in years where they have weaker performances (2022) or weaker songs (2023), and the jury should definitely show it some love.

I also hope the hype about Albania doesn't turn out to be a damp squib and translates into actual points on the board. A win might be too much of an ask but top five would be great, and well deserved.

Then again, I'm bad at predictions: I thought Norway would easily be top ten last year and they finished last.

Funny how we all have different taste - I’m with you 100% on Italy but I HATED queen of the kings or whatever it was from Norway last year.

If I was Italian I would screen grab all the ads Israel put out for vote #14 in the semis and try to circulate them like crazy today. Israel are #4 today.

I honestly think advertising for votes should be disqualifying - let alone “vote 20 times”.

Norway last year was Gåte and they definitely didn't deserve last place.

I'm pretty sure Italy will do well, it has huge appeal. The fandom are massively underrating this. It is funny seeing the songs the fans get totally wrong (like last year I could not understand why everyone was so negative about Latvia, it was clearly a good song and got a great result).

Queen of Kings was the year before and I didn't like it either! 😛 (it finished 5th)

Norway's song last year was Ulveham by Gåte, the folk-metal band. It was my favourite on the night, along with Bambie, but didn't fare as well sadly.

As for Israel, I got one of those "Vote for Us" ads on YouTube earlier. At least now I've discovered the "Block this ad" function! (I don't support such adverts from any country btw, I know Malta has done it in the past)

the fact that you start your response with “if “ the Israeli singer…. says it all really. As I said already, for you and others Oct 7 is rather uncomfortable and it’s much easier to pretend that it didn’t happen at all.
You are literally proving my point.

The irony is that you mention Israeli “propoganda” without ever pausing to consider that maybe, just maybe, you and lots of other Irish people have fallen foul of some Hamas Hezbollah Isis propoganda yourself, and are, unwittingly, the useful idiots they need.

ah of course - I forgot about poor gåte - they were great.

I think sometimes you’re better off with a distinctive song that enough people will really like and vote for rather than an average song that everyone might like but nobody likes it most.

Was at Gåte's gig in Dublin before Christmas, while I enjoy Eurovision honestly they are too good for it, what other act that finished above them has come out with something this f*cking brilliant

^ I had a ticket for that gig but didn't feel too well on the night so missed it. ☹️

Audience poll from last suggests the final is wide open. We could see votes going all over the place in both the jury vote and televote. Could well be the year when we get a surprise / shock winner and the favourite (Sweden) misses out.

The fact you’re nitpicking over words and repeating the same point over and over shows where the useful idiot is here. Nobody is defending the Oct 7 attack. Literally nobody. Keep repeating the Israeli propaganda points though. What happened afterwards is the real issue. Even Google maps sattelite images shows the destruction now. I suppose they’re swallowing the hamas propaganda as well? When even the Trump administration is starting to voice concerns about the level of sustained retaliation You know it’s bad, but hey! They’re probably just drinking the Hamas kool-aid too. How many will die in Gaza while people like yourself are cheering on an entry that should have been disqualified? Enjoy it anyway.

I don't see Sweden winning, I liked the song hearing it before the semi final but on the stage it lacked something. Maybe they'll up their game tonight but I think they finish around 3rd.

I fancy the Netherlands or France to win, Italy probably my favorite song but don't think it'll do well enough to win

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 560 ✭✭✭derb12

I hope not. If the votes are too distributed then the country with the concerted get out the vote campaign asking people who’ve never heard the song and aren’t watching the show to vote 20 times for song 4 has a better chance.

It’ll be nail biting stuff tonight.

Keep an eye on Switzerland too. Probably the only song in the final with no props, no gimmicks, no choreography, just the singer and song.

I could see Germany get its best result in years. 'Baller' is a strong entry and first time they've used the German language in a long time.

I really love Switzerland but while I think it will do well with the juries, I'm worried about the televote for it. Think however that Switzerland, France and Austria will get a solid jury vote leaving way for Sweden to gain from this 3 way split and win with a huge televote. Anyway, enjoy the night!

I completely disagree, there are some collosal mountains of shite performing including the favourite

I would love to see Italy win.

‘Volevo Essere Un Duro’ is a glorious song. 🙂

    https://www.thesun.ie/tv/15219024/emmy-irelands-eurovision-dustin-the-turkey-rte-exit/

RTE’s Head of Delegation, Michael Kealy, said he would discuss at an upcoming meeting of the EBU, the lack of juries in the semi-finals, blaming the phone voting for scuppering Ireland’s chances.

He also said that RTE lacked the resources to back its entry.

Michael said: “RTE has limitations compared to other broadcasters, you look at the amount of money and effort they spend on selecting their acts, and the campaign they run from the selection process to Eurovision night. That takes time and money.

"You don’t want to hear about RTE’s woes but unfortunately that’s the truth, and I don’t know how we are going to resolve that.”

This is the problem at RTÉ there problems are all about others and not themselves, time for RTÉ wise up with statements like this, it just shows even lower down managers don't understand the plight that they put themselves in.

I think the televoting will be very interesting.

We have all 5 Scandinavian countries in the final, so there might be taking votes off each other.

Similar for the 3 Baltics, although their songs are very different to each other.

Albania on the other hand doesn't have any of the former Yugoslavian countries to compete for points, so even accounting for geo politics in the region they could end up with lots of points. Greece might benefit too.

But as other posters mentioned earlier, Austria, France and Italy are good shouts for the win.

    Have fun tonight, everyone!!

2025 gigs: Selofan, Alison Moyet, Wardruna, Gavin Friday, Orla Gartland, The Courettes, Nine Inch Nails, Rhiannon Giddens, New Purple Celebration, Nova Twins

How much did RTE recently get from the government? Look at what their”stars” are being paid. Christ even look at the fail committee last year. The amount of people covering their asses and buck passing there. Dud we ever even get an answer out if those hearings? This is exactly the problem with RTÉ. Too many people raking it in, covering their asses and when the time comes for results, it’s always the other guy‘s fault. There seems to be plenty of money for things that want to do. Even aside 1 million for the Eurovision entry each year, that’s some in the larger scheme of things. currently 300, We, as taxpayers, either through the license fee are via government direct grant could give RTÉ 3 billion every year and I bet they would still have the same excuse. There are plenty of other stations out there doing quite well.
