Hungary has had freedom of expression and LGBT rights decline under Orban. They're a pretty terrible country to aspire to tbh but I guess for some more totalitarian and reliant on right wing propaganda is better. Putin and Orban are your aspirations for good leadership, eh?

How would Martin grifting help the Irish people?

The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

"Strong leaders" lol. Where have we heard that before? 😮

Orbán puts himself and his party and his cronies first, always. Afaik Hungary has not done well under his current period of rule (graft has a high economic price eventually) and it is being overtaken by countries that used to be poorer than it.

He is always coming out with irredentist stuff too, coveting his neighbours' lands for Hungary (and himself). I fear he'd be just as bad as Putin if he had the resources and military strength of Russia (+ an army willing to fight and die for him!).

US financial shield bolsters Hungary amid EU funding freeze, minister says

"The posture of the U.S. government, its message is perfectly clear: if there is no money from Brussels, there will be money from the U.S.," Lazar said.

"We have excellent Chinese and American ties, and the European Union should acknowledge that if they blackmail us, we will not leave it unanswered."

EU should cut them free and see how they get on as the ping pong ball getting knocked about and played with by Putin and Trump in particular, that is if he survives national elections upcoming.

Ireland should be following their lead. Especially on no immigration and cheap Russian oil. We need to stop being the EUs lapdog.

Russian oil is cheap at present due to sanctions, this situation ain't going to change anytime soon, Russia is a very aggressive country and is constantly involved in conflicts and they have no problem using immigration/refugees as an instrument of war.

Inward foreign capital investment would take a big hit if Ireland took a position similar to the chancer, Orban, who tries to walk a trapeze rope between Trump and Putin.

There is an election in Hungary early next year and there seems a reasonable chance Orban will be out of office after that. Let's wait and see.

And for the OP, considering Milosevic was indicted for crimes against humanity and genocide, then Orban is probably not in the same league.

Ahem, as difficult a character Orban is. I don't recall him perpetrating any genocide against ethnic minorities in his country. I think you may have been prone to hyperbole with this post.
