    Hi folks,

    Any valid referral links around?

Mrs plans to switch from Sky Mobile to CM over the next week or so.

    EDIT: Got one. Thanks.

Ported back out today after a month and a bit. The underlying Vodafone indoor coverage overall is still just too poor compared to 3/Eir since 3G switchoff. Too much seeing EDGE or nothing at all while 3 and GoMo (Eir) had at least 4G (and often 5G) in the same locations.

What did it for me though was the livechat - said I'd chance getting on to see if there was an account or SIM issue or just the reality of the network. Like talking to a robot - that's if you can get through as it's offline for large portions of the day. Really put me off thinking if I had an emergency issue like a lost/stolen SIM or my account got taken over - good luck to you getting that sorted anytime soon!

Out of curiosity where are you based that you are getting EDGE inside with the VF network?

    • Dublin 15 - there's a huge void in indoor 4G coverage around Castleknock, Carpenterstown and Porterstown. Practically blanket 4G and 5G on the other two operators. Has gotten slightly better since last year but largely unusable indoors.
    • In/around Kilcock, through Donadea, Timahoe, Coill Dubh, back up towards Derrinturn, or down towards Lullymore… Vodafone is easily the worst performing of the three networks across a wide area (the blackspots and EDGE-only spots are much less extensive on Eir/Three).
    • We're down around Urlingford a good bit with family, and Vodafone is practically unusable for a wide area around that neck of the woods - lots of EDGE or outright no signal indoors, and where you do have 4G outdoors it's painfully slow. Whereas Three and Eir have 4G and 5G deployed extensively down there.

Now - that said, they've deployed a lot of new 4G and 5G sites in many areas that were left completely EDGE only once 3G was switched off last year, where they absolutely blow the other two networks out of the water today. I suspect, in part, that may be to them having so few customers in those areas so the network is practically idle but also because they've brought brand new high bandwidth backhaul in with the new build.

A lot of other more rural areas they've just refarmed 3G to 4G but it may only be a single 5 or 10MHz carrier which is congested to the extreme or has awful backhaul to the site (single digit speeds, triple digit ping) and shunts you down to EDGE as soon as the signal weakens at all (which makes me suspect moreso congestion).

In short - while I did notice an improvement on Clear since last being on Vodafone a year ago, moving around they've a hell of a lot of catching up to do yet, 3G was clearly doing a lot of heavy lifting which they probably only got away with for so long because of their punitive data limits and overage charges.

While I haven't seen much difference since 3g switch off in the counties I frequent I wasi n rural Roscommon a couple of weeks ago and there has been a noticeable increase in areas with 4g but quite weak in many areas.

Previously where there was good 3g coverage that had usable data speeds it has now 4g LTEa which is usable but marginal reception.

I did notice that data speeds are often relatively much better at lower "bars" compared to 3/Eir. I would put this down to overall lower congestion on the Vodafone network relative to 3/Eir.

Problem I'm finding is once you stop indoors in a lot of places I'm in you're down to EDGE. If you're on a call and you step in from outdoors then the call either clings to 4G but gets garbled beyond use or it drops the call outright and then moves to EDGE.

If you attempt to do anything data wise while on EDGE, once you go back outdoors it seems to get "stuck" on EDGE trying to load rather than momentarily drop the (non-existant anyway) connection to shift back to 4G/5G.

    Also looking for referral link.

Can you please explain how their activation charge works?

Is it like gomo that tou pay double the first month but if you do it at beginning of month tou eventually get the month for free?

How is their billing circle? 1st of month or dependend on the day you activate the service?

    sent you pm there.

Activation charge covers your first month. You don’t pay double.

Billing I am not sure as I still haven’t received my first bill and I am with them since 23/04

Billing period is the 1st to last day of the month - I found bills took a good 10 days into the following month to become available however.

So if u take referral u don't get free month??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 775 ✭✭✭pfftdetail

You do, and you get a free 10 euro voucher for Just Eat or Penneys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,124 ✭✭✭Kaisr Sose

Thanks. I was not aware of that @Roberto_gas. As per my pm, there is nothing on the site about a free month, just the voucher.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,985 ✭✭✭Roberto_gas

then whats the activation fee ? is it not just marketing gimmick of giving one month free and charging same amount for activation ? Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 775 ✭✭✭pfftdetail

You pay 12.99 to activate, so essentially your first month is paid, your second month is free, your third month is when the billing starts.

Normally you'd pay 12.99 to activate and have a 12.99 bill a few weeks later.

okay…so first month is covered by activation fee ? They dont make it clear. Just ordered. Can you port your number later if you want ?

    do clear offer e-sim

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,702 ✭✭✭Glaceon

No. My phone has an option to convert to eSIM in the network settings but I wouldn't dare try it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,124 ✭✭✭Kaisr Sose

Same for me with a 4g phone.

Did you get a referral code ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,400 ✭✭✭Yggr of Asgard

Won't work, I tried but did did fail and physical sim continues to work. That option works with a "real" vodafone sim, so I think this should not be shown but sometimes clear thinks it's "real" vodafone.

I don't think any of the budget networks do yet, not sure why.
