The Precinct is out tomorrow, 30 euro digital and reviews due out 2pm tomorrow. Waiting to hear how much depth it is and if the missions get repetitive before dropping the money.

So they kind of did 1 game per franchise.

Can we all stop pretending that FFX is not one of the weaker FF games that feels half finished.

Golden Sun, Ni No Kuni and Kingdom Hearts 2 don't deserve to be on any list.

Same with Lost Odyssey, only remembered because of the lack of JRPGs at the time but it's not awful like those three.

Live a live, interesting game but only on there because it's the new hotness. Plenty of other better weird games like something from the Saga series.

BoF3 is good and all but Dragon Quarter is the masterpiece in that series.

Paper Mario 2 isn't that great, kick that off for Valkyrie Profile.

Kind of ok with everything else. Xenogears is a bit **** but also worth playing for how bananas it is.

I haven't played a single game on that list...

I'm actually kind of envious you never played kingdom hearts. I wish I never played it.

I will always defend Golden Sun, one of the first games I played on the GBA, back when Camelot was good. Unique battle system with good variation in classes depending on Djinn, fun story and world, and brilliant music.

But really it’s half a game, I judge it based on GS and TLA combined, and if you were going to pick one then TLA is it - it’s bigger and has more of a challenge, especially with the optional bosses.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,134 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was releasing Golden Sun as the first JRPG on the GBA so that people thought it was good and also disguising the fact that it's a spiritual sequel to Beyond the Beyond, a game that is as wretched as the Legend of Dragoon.

Absolutely cracking Matsuno soundtrack all the same.

Its a tough series to go back to. Had a friend that didn't believe me how badly it aged and she tried the recent rerelease and found it a complete chore and gave up because it was dull and nobody would shut up talking.

Nice, let me know how it is.

Wait no! I just remembered I chose that as my lock game so i hope it's ****!!

I've gotten used to games needing a big update on day one. But Doom is shipping disks with 85mb on it.

Definitely interested in the reviews at that price for digital. I have similar concerns about depth and repetition. Have been burned with these type of games before so didn't pre order.

Their last game, American Fugitive, looked like this and i loved it until i got to the 2nd map and it became a chore. This looks more advanced but hope they learned to keep things fresh.

I bought American Fugitive at launch back in the day, and after an hour I already felt like I'd seen almost everything. I've been cautious about such retro-GTAs ever since. I hope The Precinct turns out to be deeper, but for now I'm cautiously optimistic. In the meantime, I’ve been spending more time with casual stuff on the side — games of chance, quick wins, that sort of thing. If you’re into that too, I recently came across spinaway-at — pretty smooth experience so far.

I do think we'll see the rest of 2025 fill out now with that GTA6 sized gap, but I'm not sure a lot of games can suddenly pivot to a 2025 release that hadn't already been planning one. Especially in the AAA space. Though I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo has a healthy release schedule lined up, as they probably weren't competing with GTA anyway.

I reckon we'll still have a quieter than usual winter release schedule, albeit with plenty of indie and AA offerings. Though honestly January - March seems to be a busier period in general for the past few years, as publishers aim to hit their fiscal year as opposed to Christmas.

I think that was going to happen anyway. Summer Game Fest is in a few weeks and even if a GTA6 date or delay hadn't been announced, I think some publishers would have started picking/announcing their release dates. Maybe the few who ended up clashing too close to GTA6 would have been prepared to move and would have a better idea what else was releasing when, so would know if they just delayed say 5 weeks they'd clash with a smaller game.

Thankfully they announced the delay to GTA6 in enough time anyway.

Jan-Mat has become more favourable since publishers found they were competing with CoD, yearly franchises or other big games. That's spring period means they miss out on all that nonsense. Probably started about 20 years ago when a number of very well received games flopped undeservedly in that period. Think Mirrors Edge, Prince of Persia Sands of Time and Beyond Gold and Evil.

People also seem to be willing to spend money on a new game for their new console or finished up their Xmas present games.

Oof The Precinct is currently at a 65 on Metacritic. I really wanted it to do well but at the same time, I locked it on the fantasy league so no lost points for me! I feel so torn..

Nooooooooo! Bloody critics, what do they know...

I generally agree with PushSquare reviews which have given The Precinct an 8/10. And to be fair, a 6.5 or 7 out of 10 game is generally quite enjoyable when its a 10 hour-er. It only becomes a problem (for me) if its a huge game as that's when I know I'll burn out.

Just finished up Metal Wolf Chaos. The game is absolutely nuts, brilliantly so. But the ending might be the mostly brilliantly deranged thing I've ever seen in a videogame. It features a giant missile with merry Christmas on the side of it. And then gets more bonkers from there.

I see physicals of that on PS4.. sounds like its worth a pickup ?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,134 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It's a really fun game but not the most amazing game ever. A solid 8/10. But the satire of Bush era American jingoism and politics elevates it. It's hilarious and feels a bit like the closest we got to starship troopers in videogame form.

Rockstar Table Tennis is fcuking addictive.

Yeah IGN reckon roughly 12 hours for main story. It looks fine to me for 30 quid, I'll likely pick it up this weekend or whenever I'm done once again dabbling in Skyrim😂

I was looking at the recent financials from both Capcom and SquareEnix, and it's pretty grim reading for physical media.

For Capcom, it was something like 80% digital, and that's before PC was included, which is essentially all digital.

For Squenix, it was 82%, including PC.

You can see why Nintendo and offers are moving to game keys, etc, there just isn't a big enough market for them to worry about now.

In case you didn't know, magic the gathering is making Fina Fantasy cards part of their current deck. I don't play MTG because I've actually had sex before but the FF card art is really good with some really funny ones. My two favourites are the best thing about FFX:

And FF7 Remake's best character, Chaerith:

I haven’t played MTG properly since I was 12 or 13, but have been tempted by the FF Starter kit as it looks fun for a bit of a low commitment nostalgia trip.

The price of the advanced decks and boosters is absolutely wild though. Even though I’ve bought some fairly expensive board games over the last few years (I backed Frosthaven lol), those cards are mind-bogglingly expensive. Though also took me a while to figure out the terminology of what each set is and how it’s used!
