I think that very much depends on your dealer, not really a VW thing.

I had an ID.3 and the dealer was great if it had an issue. They would come to my work place, collect my car and leave an EV replacement, then drop it back when the work was done. If that was the same day or a few days.

But your experience sounds the opposite to that.

I was quoted over €400 for a 2 year old ID3 service with only about 14k on the clock (a Dublin main dealer). They're taking the piss when you consider how easy the services must be.

Agh was well aware of the ongoing issues you’re having with the ID4. It’s unfortunate as the sales figures don’t reflect the bad service you are receiving.

The only consolation is that this bad lazy services seems to be spreading across all the legacy brands out there. Inked your spending 6 figures of course!

Yeah there seems to be a definite race to the bottom in terms of service. Manufacturers definitely are aiming to provide the absolute minimum they'll get away with

It's always been like this to some degree but I feel like it's really accelerated recently

To some degree yes, the customer service in Joe Duffy is pretty dire. My previous car was from Windsor Nissan and they were much better

However VW are definitely to blame to some degree

To give an overview, my car failed the 3.7 update because it got stuck and had to be towed to the garage. When I contacted VW Ireland about the tow they said my roadside assistance had expired and I would have to pay for the tow. After some back and forth they agreed to foot the bill but it's a pretty poor customer experience to be told "too bad so sad"

Afterwards the keyless entry wasn't working on the driver's side. This has since been diagnosed to a failed controller costing over €500

I've also a leaking diff seal which cost over €700 to repair. I concede this could happen anytime so I don't blame VW for this

Final issue is a leaking water seal around the reversing camera. When water gets in the picture goes mental and starts showing rainbows. Pretty sure that started after VW were power washing it but again I concede it could have happened anytime. However I don't think that's a reasonable lifetime for an apparently non replaceable seal, so I'm arguing with VW why I should foot the €500 or so for a manufacturing defect

It's also worth pointing out that the camera could be fixed with a new seal costing probably €1 if VW had bothered to include any kind of reparability in the design. Same for the door controller, could be a bad connection or software which could potentially be fixed using a laptop

But that's classic VW group isn't it, make it as hard as possible to fix the cars without buying their specialist parts 🙄

Just did a google, 2 places near me seem to offer some kind of EV servicing

But no idea of how decent they are. Does anyone here service their EV car in a non dealer? Is it becoming more common I wonder?

When you say service. What exactly are you asking?

All they are doing is a visual check of the mechanical components, suspension, brakes etc

    Check any fluid levels.
    change a cabin filter.
    brake fluid depending.

A first year apprentice can do it so once the garage is reputable then you’re good to go.

The biggest hurdle is if the garage will take it for their own insurance reasons and if their staff are trained to “work” on HV/EV cars.

I don't really know to be honest - servicing of an EV is all a bit of a cod really :)

But yeah, its probably the items you mention and maybe a health check of battery

This thread has confirmed for me that I would be an absolute mug to ever buy a Volkswagen EV.

I got my ID3 serviced at an independent garage today, they replaced 2 drop- links, the sound generator module, brake fluid and did an NCT check, so lights and brakes are checked.

The bill came to €600 euro, so while I am happy with the quality of the work, I am not sure if I saved any money by going independent.

You can do the health check yourself. That’s not a service item.

I had my first (2 year) service done a few weeks ago and assumed a battery SOH check would be part of the service but no, I was quoted €169.12 extra for it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,334 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

That's bizarre, they did mine as part of the service

Afaik there's 2 types of check. There's a quick one where they just read the battery SOH from the car and the full test where they actually run several charge and discharge cycles

I'm guessing I got the quick one and they were quoting you the full test

You'd be an absolute mug to base your opinion on this thread. There's thousands of happy drivers of VW EVs out there, including myself (for the most part).

That goes for every EV/brand out there I guess.

I don't think any EV is suitable for you then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,366 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

I already have one that is completely issue-free, and with none of the manufacturer impositions mentioned above.

For the next car however it would be difficult to look at VW as an option, given some of the stories in this thread alone.

You should have no issue on a Yr old car.

VW are shooting themselves in both feet with a short warranty and lack of goodwill in certain dealers. It's a pity because the size and features suit a lot people.

yeah sure thats it.. people mostly come on forums to complain about issues… its a small minority of actual owners.. on my second id4 and this one in particular is very boring… nothing much to complain about at all.. first one had a few software glitches that was sorted.. but nothing really to report with the pro plus 242

If they all had different issues you could write it off as complaining. But when it's the same issues across different people, different forums, different countries. Then there's something to it.

Get a lot of data together and you'll see the hotspots. People's individual experience really not so much.

Pretty much all the issues are minor. Great cars

Like the doors opening or the car going dead after a failed update.

I'd say you did very well in comparison to using my local VW Dealer (Western Motors in Galway). I had to get the sound generator replaced a couple of months ago and it cost €708 including labour and VAT. They are very expensive! An ID4 service with them was €275 a year ago.

When the sound generator went I didn't even consider going to a independent garage as I wasn't sure they would be able to sort it. I will in future!

Do your dealers not offer an extended warranty after the 3yrs. Would that not mitigate some of these costs. I bought that with my VW. Bit of con because they insisted on bundling other things with it

I did say pretty much all, and as you well know, all cars can have issues. While those issues have affected some cars, I've no doubt there's many more who like me who have not had any issues. There is nothing inherently wrong with the ID cars.

The ID4 and ID3 are lovely cars in my experience and I would reccommend them to everyone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,667 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

No doubt but you said minor and some of the issues were not minor.

I just think manufacturers need to cop themselves on with the cost of servicing, repairs, repairability, warranty claims, warranty length, software quality and how long updates are supported. For what is a very expensive item, a car.

If someone has had no problems it's probably not in your mindset. Rotating a car every 3yrs might be away of avoiding most issues.

But has to colour buyers choices.

I see a new trim was released this week - Pro Style. Basically the Pro Plus with a black pack, pannonroof and upgraded seats.

Pretty good value as those extras usually push a pro plus over the €50k mark.

0.9% PCP across the electric ID range too.

I like my ID.4 but VW bricking it during a software update and then telling me I wasn't covered for a tow is extremely poor behaviour

I also wouldn't call it a minor issue, I was out of a car for 3 days and not even the slightest hint of an apology

It isn't so much the issues I've been having, its the customer service from VW and their garages. It's been very unprofessional all the way through

I don't like having to be a Karen and fight customer service agents to see their product is at fault. I tend to be a lot more passive in my dealings with businesses and I try to be constructive whenever possible. I don't think that having an argument with VW customer service should be part of the process

I'll concede that everyone's experience varies but Joe Duffy are one of the main franchises in Dublin for many brands so its kind of hard to escape them

My previous dealings with brand garages from Windsor have been much better. Again it isn't the price so much as the feeling that the service guys in the garage are actually paying attention and trying to solve your issue

With Duffers I get to talk to some brain dead agent who's eyes glaze over as I'm describing issues and couldn't even manage to give me a printout of the estimated price for a repair job

As the car goes, it's great but I couldn't bear dealing with Duffers again so I won't be buying another one for the foreseeable future. We'll see what happens when they move to the direct sales model, maybe it'll force the garages to focus more on customer satisfaction

Like I said, they're responsible for most of the brands in Dublin so even if I jump ship there's not many options

I won't be going with Tesla either, don't want to deal with Elon's BS and I don't like the cars anyways

I believe that direct sales model idea has been dropped hasn't it? Not sure if it was VW or BMW that scrapped the idea but I did think it was VW I heard were rowing back on it.
