The red number one when you got a notification of a new post in a followed thread.

There was a real psychology behind it because I'd find it annoying and want it gone, whereas now I'll check notifications and not bother clicking on the thread if I'm not interested enough.

Definitely miss the old prison forum, always good for a laugh especially the excuses from the inmates.

One that sticks out for me was a poster who used a family bereavement as an excuse for some "emotional posting" and turned out it was a cat that hat died.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

Probably a bit more tolerance of good old fashioned straight talking than today-After Hours was really for people who could hold their own - you wouldn’t have seen a mod warning in AH for being “uncivil” that’s for sure - it was expected that you should be uncivil 😀

AH used me much more piss taking rather than what it has become now.

Miss the simplicity of being able to go back and see all your previous posts, ever!

Absolutely everything about v bulletin was better. My most missed feature is being able to view someone's/your own posts by forum.

How much money would be needed to bring vbulletin back here I wonder?

He was around for ages post-changeover, and I'd say you'd be hard-pushed to find anyone else who misses him!

In fact, I'm almost entirely sure he only joined after the move to Vanilla.

People used to be comfortable posting up a photo of themselves.

Being able to see a list of the most thanked posts of the last 24 hours.

Not only would you see some wonderful posts, but you'd end up reading entire threads that you'd otherwise never have brought to your attention.

Being able to search within a specific category instead of site wide.

From a design aesthetic… Such a much nicer looking and aesthetically pleasing site when dark mode was an option.. I was cleaning out old photos from my tablet about a year ago and there was a screenshot I captured and remembered thinking jeeeez it still ‘looked’ both modern and easy on the eye…. with the then dark mode.

Just doing a little searching now and…..in July 2021 a then moderator or admin ( I forget which ) Zaph said, in reply to posters querying if there was to be a dark mode ….. that thread..

    https://www.boards.ie/discussion/comment/117623781/#Comment_117623781

“There isn't one. Niamh said before the migration that it would be one of their priorities after go-live because so many people asked for it. I'm genuinely amazed at how many people are clamouring for it, personally I hate dark screens.”

So four years abouts after it was first communicated as “ a priority “, here we are. So I’d presume based on this the dark mode won’t be returning…

Thread is like a shopping list of what made boards work when it was good. The new version is like a g&t, but without the g. And the t. It’s basically a glass of ice cubes with a pointless slice of lemon.

    Basically—everything!

Vanilla is just worse in every possible way. Can't think of a single thing about it that's positive or an improvement.

Yes! Some complete randomer who only posted about three times found it, 14 months after I started the thread. I've never felt so vindicated in my life, cause half the thread was people telling me I'd imagined/misremembered it.

I miss dark mode. Aesthetics wise it was very pleasing.

I also miss being able to see clearly how many and exactly who had thanked a post. There was something viscerally exciting about reading a post that had absolutely hit something on the head and then seeing the avalanche of names in the thanks bar underneath

The most thanked posts on the front page was really great, as many have said it brought you to different threads or areas of the site, it got people off the front page.

The one thing it has, literally the only one quality of life improvement, is the ease of uploading images. You just click the image icon and upload.

In the old days you had to upload to image hosting websites and link it over. Was wide open to issues as shown by the Photobucket debacle a few years ago.

Yes, that is true. But the amount lost is actually terrible.
