Is there a current delay issue with firearms Licence renewal grant letters being issued withinn the State?

I handed in my renewal documents well over 3 months ago and my current licences expire withinn a few more days

Countless phone calls to Local Garda station for weeks vocing my concerns with grant letter delay asking if i could speak with local FO to which i am told is not present and emails have been sent to Fo forwarding my contact number yet no reply or help regarding the issue

As i understand firearms licencing renewals are supposed to be granted withinn a three month period or before current licence expiery date Or a reason given if renewa to be refused

    Is this the Case?

I will be asking for a meeting with the Super to try and get some answers which up untill now have been lacking.

This is the most recent dump of data from the firearms licence survey:
    https://firearmsunited.ie/irish-firearms-certificate-waiting-times-survey-results-30th-april-2024/

And here is the link to the survey thread here on boards:
    https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058304131/firearms-certificate-waiting-times-survey

On the first link you can see the average waiting time for your county, and the second I'd be obliged when you do get your renewal to fill in the survey to inform the next guy asking about renewal times.

As you'll see from the results it is between under a month to 4 months on average, but there are outliers(myself, over 6 months was the longest wait for a renewal).
Legally they have to be completed within 3 months from the date which you hand it in, and if you hear nothing by that point it is deemed to be a refusal and you are entitled to a letter explaining the refusal.

Renewals are also no different from new applications(bar the pre-populated forms), so while in theory they should be quicker that is not always the case.
If you want more up to date info for your district either drop the county here or PM it to me and I will send you the latest data on licencing in your district.

August to December this year is the 6th anniversary of the introduction of the 3 year licence and causes untold delays as so many licences are due for renewal at the same time, due to the way it was instigated.

Basically another upwardly raised middle finger to the law-abiding firearms owner as you are left in possession of unlicenced firearms and to hell with the law stating that it must be sorted within 3 months

Unfortunately the law specified no penalty for AGS if they don't abide by the 3 month period.
You can be sure as hell that if it included a penalty for them they would abide by it and resource their FOs appropriately, but indeed it is left on the long finger in many counties until well past the date.

Think its more like 16 years rather than 6? Why we couldnt copy , as we usually do, the Brits and make it a 5 year liscense back then is always a mystery.

2009 to 2024 is 15 years. Number of 3 year licences issued in that time is 5. Therefore next issue is 6th.QED

What station are you talking about? Having difficulty getting in touch with FO myself, rang a few times, he works from home and 2 emails were sent to him or so I'm told. Normally he's quick on returning calls so kinda unusual not to get a return call.

Based in Westmeath, I'm waiting over 4 months for a renewal! My rifle license has now expired (no fault of my own). Its locked away in the safe and I'm fully compliant with security. My question here is, could the Guards swoop and seize the firearm? Should I give it into my local firearms dealer for temporary storage? Or just wait it out. Like a lot of people in this forum, I have made several phone calls and sent emails to the local station…no joy!

So the extremely bad way this is done in law gives no grace period if your licence expires while ags are still processing it, once the licence expires you are in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

And so yes, legally the best route would be to store it with an RFD.

However, AGS are aware, to a greater or lesser extent, of how their lackadaisical attitude affects applications, so the vast majority won't see an issue in you keeping it while waiting for a renewal.

But, if you are getting nothing from your local station, call your district office(super's office) and ask about your application.

Ensure at the very least they have it and are processing it.

I do know of people who have had a knock at the door and had their guns seized while their paperwork was processing, because the paperwork was seemingly lost and so it was flagged after however many months as not having been renewed.

For some a court case ensued which was quickly thrown out by the judge along with an order to ags to issue the licence, for others having explained the situation to ags on the doorstep the FO was contacted and new paperwork was done and licenced again granted.

But those are absolutely outliers, most of the time just getting a confirmation that they are processing it from the supers office(and note the date and who you are speaking to) should be sufficient.

If you are particularly concerned you could mention to the super's office your concern about being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and usually they will say to do exactly as you are, just keep it in the safe til the grant letter arrives and is paid.
