The image, like the light-sabre one, should be deeply concerning for everyone, not just offended Catholics, as they demonstrate the profoundly disturbed mindset of Trump and his White House. It is comparable to his so-called Cabinet meetings, his government by tweet and Executive Order, and his utterly deranged ideas on economics, diplomacy, the legal system, and the responsibilities of being a President.

Coming into a thread arguing that you have no interest in American politics but then getting annoyed about some 'offended' woman and linking it to grants related to abortion services shows you really need to be taking more interest if you want to post anything useful here.

I'd be more concerned about people who can't take a joke they're always the first people to be worried sbout in life in general.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,559 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

Do you think your grandmother is more offended by abortion or this image of trump in a popes uniform?

Why is Kathy Hochul offended by the image of Trump but not offended by abortion?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,504 ✭✭✭Yeah_Right

Hundreds of thousands of Catholics in Ireland voted in favour of abortion a few years ago. How do you square that circle? Maybe people can be Catholic and think for themselves?

Coming across as being bitter that your gotcha post wasn't fooling anyone.

And as usual, rather than reflect on the responses received, takes a shot at all the others here.

Religion is made up. Let people be offended by these types of things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,094 ✭✭✭✭aloyisious

Oh, I don't know about that. I think a lot of people would like to give Trump a knee-jerk reaction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,144 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

I think most people were shocked that any leader of a country could contemplate posting that picture. Religious folk may have also been offended by his getup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 863 ✭✭✭reclose

I’d agree it’s not what you’d expect from a head of state.

The less relevance religion has in society the better.

I don't see it as being about whether or not religious people are offended. I see it as being about basic decency and of course the man who thinks Nazis are very fine people once again falls far short of a very low bar. On top of this, we have the usual MAGAs here desperately telling us that this is just the latest move in a 4D chess game.

AI generated crap. Any clued in human would have used "May the 4th be with you."

The generally unfunnyness of the their memes suggests a small pool rather than grassroots support. There's rarely any word play.

Just think how far right you have to be to consider the Democrats 'Radical Left'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,814 ✭✭✭✭briany

Trump's been saying or doing controversial things for his whole political career and every single time he does so, he gets exactly the reaction he wants.

It seems to me that Trump's opponents are more interested in the little dopamine hit gained from displaying indignation and therefore moral superiority than they are in really getting rid of him. I would argue that roundly ignoring this kind of thing is far more hurtful to Trump than any shock that's proclaimed. His opponents in the US should use that mental energy in drafting policies that give people something to vote FOR. The Democrats don't seem to have learned that their policy of pointing at how terrible Trump is will get them four more years at best, but maybe not even that when you think of how Trump is consolidating his position.

100% tariffs on movies not made in the US now. This is mental stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,130 ✭✭✭✭Timberrrrrrrr

And in today's episode of "he said what now?"

Trump says he will reopen Alcatraz

Trump places a 100% tariff on foreign made movies because they're full of propaganda and are a "national security threat"

Would take a decade to have Alcatraz ready to be a prison. When I last visited 15 years ago the guide showed us where it was completely falling apart. This won't happen, the cost alone would make it much easier to just build 10 normal prisons.

Movie industry in the US will be dead if this 100% tariffs comes in.

Incredible how this guy seems to top himself on daily basis. What's tomorrow's plan, buy Ireland and turn whole place into Trump golf course...

The movie industry is dead because Hollywood hasn't come up with an original idea in decades. Also streaming.

Abortion is legal in every US state (though some with draconian restrictions to make it effectively illegal.) NY State (I think) was the first to legalize it post-Roe. She's perfectly fine to state her opinion.

Even the Catholic Church in the US has weakly said things against CFTrump's latest grotesquerie, and plenty of US Catholics are pro-choice.

But you miss the important point: Trump never jokes, he's said so himself repeatedly. He's thinking he's floating a balloon, which is proving to be unpopular.

Plus he's so blindingly stupid, like his supporters, that he doesn't even realize he has no chance at the job. "Can't fault a guy for trying, can you?"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,025 ✭✭✭dogbert27

I'd like Trump to declare himself the next Mohammed and see how far that gets him… oh wait, that's not as easy as beating up the wimpy Catholics.

The Trump administration is what you get when the jocks and cheerleaders get to run a high school.

Home-grown Trumpites have something in common with their American MAGA counterparts. Equally clueless, equally loud and equally desperate for relevance. Completely disconnected from reality and use their 'movement' to cover their own personal failings.

Blame everyone else for their sh*t lives.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,354 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

Erm, you realise plenty of Ireland is Catholic but equally supported repeal? The reality is plenty of Catholics are pro choice and that should be something you're well aware of.

In terms of a dignitary making a "joke" after the leader of a world religion died that's in incredibly poor taste. It's more just one of the low level examples of why he is entirely unsuitable for the role of president cause he can't conduct himself appropriately. Somehow making this about the Democrats being at fault is a leap.

The Trump fans seem to be incapable of criticising anything he does….

I think there was someone that said recently that it cost the same amount to fly 100 people to Ireland and shoot most of the movie there than to just take a walk across the studios in US. (Paraphrasing there).

What even is the tariff going to be based on? How do you even tariff a production. It's absolute batshit crazy stuff, that would be hilarious if it wasn't so serious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,169 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

Trump: "I don't think a beautiful baby girl that's 11 years old needs to have 30 dolls. I think they can have three dolls or four dolls ... they don't need to have 250 pencils. They can have five."

    Couple of things here.

    1. 11 year old girls aren't babies
    2. 11 year old girls generally don't have dolls
    3. Why the **** is he talking about 11 year old having to skimp on school supllies as a result of this failed economic policy? Where the hell is Trump's sacrifice? Is he going to skimp on golf trips, expenses or wages? Is he f**k. This is the modern day "let them eat cake"

I just love this. It should be a real Gotcha moment for the Democrats. I would love to see a journalist read to him what he said and then read out the oath of office he took.

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/may/04/trump-due-process-rights-constitution

I hope this figures in some future article of impeachment.

Also there would seem to be a good place opening up to house MAGA criminals (following due process, of course):

I hope this just ends up helping movie industries around the world. I certainly don't want to only watch movies that are only shot in America, as if the rest of the world doesn't exist.

Out of curiousity, was she offended by the RTE Investigates programme about clerical child abuse in the Christian Brothers schools, cover ups by the hierarchy and their enormous wealth on Wednesday night?

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

I'd say Alcatraz earns a pretty penny for the people of California. Would be silly to convert it back to a prison. Another idea that will go absolutely nowhere and be forgotten soon enough. Trump is best ignored.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?
