I need a van

    I'm after taking on a job where I will be moving equipment around every day for about 12 weeks. The stuff is big and bulky so my car won't cut it, so it's been decided that I need a van. I'll need something larger than a caddy but not sprinter size. A mid size van like a transit

    The average daily distance is 300kms return and the aim is to do this as cheaply as possible all-in. The van will be disposed of in three months, when this project concludes.

    I know nothing about vans and even less about what to look out for on used ones. Cheap vans on DD look a lot more beat up than cheap cars so this seems like a minefield.

    Any pointers appreciated.

    enterprise ireland used rent out vans might be worth considering ,

    you need some thing fresh for that journey

    Call around rental companies and see if any will do you a deal.

    Vans are classed different to cars, so your insurance might not extend to a van, meaning you need a fresh policy and your no claims won't apply

    There are leasing companies,that do short-term commercial leasing, one if them is Northgate, but a quick Google search will prob give you loads..

    Or look at getting a Citroen dispatch/ Peugeot expert , or ford transit custon ,type van , bigger than a caddy smaller than a transit/ sprinter .

    In a way I wouldn't recommend cheaping out to much .. you might be fine , or you may end up on the side of the road waiting for a tow ..

    and get the van well checked out before you buy

    All of them with high milage are done for .I know vans still going well with 350km but plenty of service on time and costly to maintain and as well lads dont normally sell them unless costly repairs looming

    The cheapest possible way of doing this is with a trailer.

    Now obviously a trailer has many drawbacks vs a van but its the cheapest way in your scenario.

    You haven’t mentioned a budget, but driving any recently purchased van or car 300km a day will come with it risks. Older vans in particular will be more of a gamble.

    I suppose up to €10k but I want to get almost all of that back when I move it on.

    I had thought about a trailer but the video of one fishtailing on the motorway and it knocked that idea on the head. I drive an ID4 so it's not practical anyway

    Not against the idea of electric, but I doubt I'd get one that could do 160km with a couple of hundred kg in the back. I only have access to a 13amp socket at site too, though id be there 8 hours

    Yeah €10k is a decent budget to be fair, but if you want to get almost all of your money back you will need to buy privately and be very good at negotiating. If you buy from a dealer you are likely to loose 30% by the time you sell it on.

    Rental van much better, buying a 10k van for a 3 month job is way too capital intensive

    For three months price a rental ,you will have a backup service round the clock if you have problem but a rental should be in good condition

    Except the clutch, I know someone who works on these after an post upgrades, all the stop start driving is hard on them apparently.

    With service intervals of upwards of 30-40,000km for some vans now I'd disagree with well maintained.

    They're maintained as specified by the manufacturer whether that's a good thing is debatable.
