What sim router are you all using? I take it it's a 5G…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,060 ✭✭✭Simi

I use the Huawei 5G CPE Pro 2 https://ie.webuy.com/product-detail?id=SNETHUA5GCPEPRO2&categoryName=WIRELESS-ROUTERS&superCatName=COMPUTING&title=&queryID=F42FEC3CE7CDF4C7047FAD0823C8955C&position=6 . Normally it's cheaper than the CPE 5 https://ie.webuy.com/product-detail?id=6975508990211&categoryName=WIRELESS-ROUTERS&superCatName=COMPUTING&title=&queryID=A8AF8492FCB34DE0EE297A8FCAD339CF&position=4 , which has double the theoretical 5G upload speed 250mb/s vs 500mb/s. They're both €200 at moment so you may as well get the CPE 5. The CPE Pro 3 has half the WIFI speed so don't get that one. My top speed is ~330mb/s down, 70mb/s up on the Three, but I live out in the sticks.

I don't have any experience with the ZTE or Netgear models.

I use the CPE Pro 5 and find it excellent - you can often find them on marketplace or adverts.ie which is where I got mine. I know nothing about them, so delighted that @Simi hs given it the thumbs up. We have a couple of the ZTE 5G sim routers at work (both locked to 3 network) and find them very good too. Think they are also about 200e

I use an old phone as a hotspot.

Have a timer plug socket to give the phone a charge for an hour every day automatically.

    Phone is a oneplus 6t

I'm interested in recommendations too. I tether an old phone to my router. And it's great to be fair. I'd just like to find something more purposeful to stick in with my network gear. Don't need nothing fancy like Wifi or anything.

Though an old 5g phone seems to be better value than anything I've found so far.

This looks pretty cool. But yikes, the price. https://irishwireless.net/teltonika-trb500-industrial-5g-gateway-trb5000000?gQT=1

Hello folks looking for some advice, currently in the UK and struggling to get data, I'm on the train wifi at the mo.I've manually selected all the different networks but can only get calls and texts.

Is there anything I could do in the settings to get mobile data working?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,372 ✭✭✭ooter

Sorted it I had to go in to the APN settings and add 48months.liffeytelecom.com.

I wonder if it's possible to use USB tethering to a router with a USB port

Should be doable if you're using a PC as a router, but not sure if most home routers would have the option

EDIT: Some quick googling tells me that a USB-C dock with ethernet should let you tether the phone to a router or switch over ethernet (assuming you already have a home network set up)

I'd say you'll want a dock that has a built in charging port sroid-usb-tethering-to-ethernet-to-router

If it's going to be a permanent fixture then you could loop an elastic band around the USB plug and then around the phone to stop the plug accidentally coming out

Oh no, i already have a phone usb tethered to my router. which is working well to be fair. I'm just looking into what I can do to make it a bit more of a proper job. Just for my own interest. What I'm looking for is a device with wired LAN and mobile data only.

From researching, it seems these "outdoor routers" are what's most widely available. I mean these seem to be exactly what providers are installing for some customers.

    https://consumer.huawei.com/en/routers/5g-cpe-win/

They need POE, and the ethernet should be earth bonded. Or I suppose, you could also just choose to not put it outside if signal is adequate.

Did anyone who is on €7.99 plan try to buy €12.99 membership and come back after to €7.99. I am wondered is it possible to switch between 4G and 5G plans or once you buy €12.99 it does not let to come back to €7.99?

As far as I know, if you switch to a more expensive plan you can't switch back.

I’ve never tried it. 4G is more then enough for me so not gona tempt fate.

Yes, if you leave the €7.99 plan you won't be allowed change back.

Since I returned from abroad/roaming I'm noticing a H symbol beside my signal icon at the top of my screen, my Internet hasn't been the same and video playback is not great

Does anyone know what the problem might be?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,352 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Pretty sure the H is HSDPA, basically 3G

In your phone settings under network provider there might be an option to set what standard of network to connect to, maybe see if 4G/5G are disabled

You could also try putting the network settings to manual, connect to a different network (which should fail) and then re-enable automatic mode

I finally ported out of 48. The signal at home in D18 since Jan was frequently well below 1mbs and since storm, often less than 100kbs. When roaming last month in Austria there service was brutal. Frequently loosing data, hours without data and having to manually change the settings multi times to get service, including being able to make calls home. Totally broken as a roaming service.

I had some credit on my account that I used for international calls. Is there any way I can get this refunded?

I noticed that I had to disable my VPN to be able to use PTSB app on 48.ie for some reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,580 ✭✭✭beachhead

That occurred to me as well over the weekend. But made no difference and a selection of browsers used.

It’s so annoying 48 still don’t support VoLTE. It’s just 48, An Post Mobile and Tesco Mobile left is it that don’t support it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,239 ✭✭✭GIMP

Its annoying they don't, I noticed alot of dropped calls on Tesco recently, but they have been guilty of that for years

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 100 ✭✭PH0NER

They need to support VoLTE and WiFi Calling. These features are supported on MVNOs all over the world, not sure why it’s so hard for them to get it sorted

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,117 ✭✭✭StormForce13

Probably an idiot level question, but, according to 48:

"To experience 5G, you need three things: a 5G-ready device, the €12.99 5G plan, and 5G coverage in your area."

I have a 5G device, I have paid the €12.99 5G plan, I'm located in the middle of a 5G coverage area, but my 5G MiFi router is only receiving a (strong) 4G signal. 😟

Other than contacting 48, what else could I try to get a 5G signal, please?

    Not Your Ornery Onager

Anyone know why I can't send MMS (e.g. a picture) when texting using Google Messages?

Don't you need credit on your 48 account to send MMS messages? They aren't included in the usual bundles as far as I recall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 949 ✭✭✭NotShero

Have you set the APN in settings?
