It was popular with male and female schoolgoers and it was on Sunday to Thursday nights.

Thursday nights was when listeners called in and gave their opinion on new singles releases, with Gerry leading the conversation it might have developed into a general discussion about teenage issues and the like.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

I remember he strictly forbade requests and would hang up on the caller if they tried

Can't miss someone i never listened to or watched. Even his photo in a magazine or newspaper would make me move on.

This was the man who reportedly preached to people about how they should live their lives yet he blew money on drugs and judging by later photos of him, he certainly never missed a meal.

So maybe a loss to his family but definitely no loss to humanity.

The weird need to still look after his talentless kids is so grating

The coke-addled literal heart attack waiting to happen helping the nation on their health goals? Something was amiss there.

I rarely listened to him, so I personally don't miss him. Having said that, I think he was a very talented radio presenter who had the ability to connect with his listeners in a way not everybody does. Gerry and his show were too much of a mixed bag for my liking. He could be interesting and sensitive one moment, and insufferable the next. He wasn't for me but I can see why so many people took to him.

If he was still around it is an absolute guarantee he would be hated on Boards for being one of the "Montrose set" and most of the country would think he was as useless as Darcy, Duffy, Kenny or Tubridy.

For sure. If the search was working properly here, I'm sure we'd find an ancient GR thread with exactly what you've described. I listened to the Indo Daily podcast earlier and they touched on an interesting point. Gerry was openly reluctant to take a pay cut back in 2009 and you've got to wonder what would've happened down the line with his pay. We know he lived large and liked his money. Would he have found himself in the same trouble as Ryan Tubridy?

    Harsh..

But you just reminded me he ironically was the presenter of Operation Transformation...

It's interesting to ponder what he'd be doing these days alright. I wonder if his lack of financial security (and possibly poor judgement partly due to years of drug abuse) could have led to him making some ill-advised decisions. He could have gone down the right-wing grifter route on podcasts or YouTube or wherever. He might even be talking about a run for the Aras!

His agent has a credit on the show (“based on an idea by Noel Kelly” or words to that effect), Ryan was the host, Ciara Kelly the GP, Karl Henry for fitness - all were Noel Kelly “talent” at the time though Ciara Kelly left during the scandal. Ryan was replaced by Kathryn Thomas - another NK “talent”.

Join the dots. One thing that definitely got healthier from the show were the NKM accounts.

He would have been a tiny fish in a very large pond.

The US is full of local talk radio and Ryan would have really struggled to stand out .

think there were two phases of Gerry Ryan. The forced being the sharp, savvy radio Jaco made his way from pirate radio to 2FM and established himself as one of the stars the second being the coke-snorting, bon viveur who is Work was they ready to fuel his lifestyle.

I was a big fan of Gerry when he was doing nights 2FM but I only started listening from about 1987 onwards. That was towards the end of his tenure. I was only 12 or 13, but I thought the show was excellent. He played great music and great craic as well. Finally enougheven the signs of things to come starting to show. I remember he’s final FM show in 1988. He was moving to the 9 am slot but I found his final show disappointing. He had Moira, the wife, in studio I think but I definitely remember him talking about quaffing champagne while on air.

once I got to listen to his 9 am show I was also not that impressed but then again I wasn’t the audience. I think he is sure very much took over the housewives favourite slut established by Gay Byrne, just updated for a modern audience. During the early 90s also, RTÉ struggled to find a TV vehicle for him. It wasn’t for the but largely anything very good. I do remember him presenting the school around the corner which was pretty good overall from what I can remember. Contrary to what here earlier, I thought he brought some freshness to the when he hosted, I could definitely have seen him taking up the reigns after Pat Kenny.

By the mid to late 90s though I think we were in the second phase of G Ryan though. You could see that he’s health was starting to disprove. I had forgotten that he took part in operation transformation. That really was a bad choice. I can’t remember really listening to his radio show in the mornings. to get sick of him on television as well. He wasn’t really on my the late 90s/early 2000s.

Gerry and Pat Kenny great friends. I think if Gerry hadn’t got a line by his coke habit, you could probably draw a parallel between pets career and .Gerry’s. I think the early Gerry Ryan would have seen what direction the winds were blowing in RTÉ and have probably jumped to the independent sector around 2010 or a few years after. He would’ve certainly known that there wasn’t going to be a Gay Byrne type deal could retire but be work for anybody else on offer. I could see the ability to earn more money without scrutiny being an attraction. I think early Gerry would have taken a pay cut if it was needed as, let’s face it, he trained as a solicitor saw the guy he was clever and would have been astute. However, in real life I think he would have gone down the same as Ryan Tubridy. In fact, we might be talking about Gerry kicking off the RTÉ scandal. Using it fine restaurants while supporting a coal cabinet. restaurants while supporting a coke habit doesn’t come cheap. He was also separated by and having to support I assume his wife and family so renting his own place definitely takes a priority in that case.

as a radio man, I think he did what he did very well. 80s Ireland was a small market so, just like we didn’t figure out that was ripping off the Steve Wright player book, we didn’t know enough about shock jocks so what ever he was doing was fresh and innovative. was doing was fresh and innovative. A lot to an end the day Gerry passed away. I feel it was the last of the era of big babe celebrity jocks. It punched a big hole in RTÉ that never was really filled. a big RTÉ that never was really filled. At the time I remember being to see how out for somebody that at one time I thought was really talented, and very much appointment radio.

I think it’s true that, if Gerry was still broadcasting today, we would be complaining about him on here. I could definitely see him turning into self righteous presenter, and also possibly a bit of a crank. I would think he would be on Newstalk however an Ian Dempsey style to FM might have been good as well. Ian seems to be doing fine over there. It’s hard to believe it’s been 15 years. Rest in peace, Gerry.

yup. And his death. He died from a drug induced cocaine incident. He was “part” of the criminal underworld. Knee deep in sourcing illegal drugs for years.

Cocaine, a drug that has fuelled gangland criminality, murder and misery up and down the country.

Lionised by RTE and the media. I wonder would he be so venerated if he was some Joe soap from the inner city. The hypocrisy surrounding his death was staggering.

I can't remember if it was the oldest incarnation of boards, or maybe P45 or one of the radio websites but in the latter days, Ryan used to get dogs abuse for reading from the newspapers for the first 30 minutes of the show. Lazy radio at its finest!

Yep, I'm aware of all of that.

Ryan was STILL an absolutely ridiculous choice for hosting a health improvement show, partially funded by Dept Health.

By page 3 it's just pure hate watching. Just as I expected.

Nothing like dying to make people like you.

hi, to be clear, I’m not debating that aspect of it and wholly agree! I’m just offering “suggestions” as to the reasoning behind the choice. The tail at the time was wagging the dog, still is to a degree.

When did Noel Kelly start representing Gerry Ryan and other top stars in RTE? I remember the Late Late Show tribute to Gerry where Joe Duffy called Gerry an incredible negotiator. Was Gerry one of the first to sign up to Noel Kelly's agency? I know that Shane Ross has a book coming out about RTE. Would be interesting to find out how he gained so much power over the management of RTE.

I know brendan O'connor Is a turf munchin rte lickarse who runs from controversial topics like a rat out of an aqueduct but the current presenters genuinely do seem hamstrung by litigation, imagine having to pay david quinn and those other Gobshites 100k every time they get offended

My enduring memory of Ryan was listening to him every morning on an overcrowded commuter train as he gave the sanitised Ryan/Clontarf/Ivor Callely version of the self-serving blather that Saint Bertie the Digout King had given to the Mahon Tribunal on the previous day. It was nauseating stuff.

I loathed him then and haven't subsequently seen any reason to change my mind.

Caught a snippet of the 1987 shoe there. Will listen more later. I don’t remember him being that professional sounding! He always be off the cuff and you can kind of hear that. It just shows how informal banter has become. It does jump out though that he is very much into the music he’s playing. That’s really why I show I’m thinking.

Ryan wasn’t alone on that front. Lots of the NK Crew seem to be big Fianna Fáil supporters, esp. Tubridy and Duffy. Perhaps it’s just a coincidence…..
