Well the US grew on the belief in the right of the individual over society, the right to pursue happiness etc...

That worked as long as poor immigrants could grasp opportunity, they kept adding to the pyramids base.

The pyramid is collapsing so what's to keep the franchise together?

If the individual is frustrated and no longer content with the status quo then something is going to give.

I said this yesterday, but this seems to be the latest thing going around social media and as someone who lives in vegas, I'm just not seeing it yet. Monday was the 3rd busiest day at the airport ever and everywhere is still packed. I know for a fact that in at least one of the big casino companies, earnings are up this year and hotel occupancy is still close to 100%, and is 100% at some properties. The state took in over a billion dollars in gaming tax just in March, and most of that is vegas. Also last year the super bowl was here so obviously bookings, spending etc will be a drop compared to that. If anything is putting people off it's the ridiculous charges like parking and resort fees as well as the extortionate cost of food and drinks on the strip but we will see how things go. I'm not looking forward to what the effects of a recession might be, certainly not wishing it on like some seem to be.

Id imagine domestically a lot of trips were planned in advance, a clearer sign would be a slowdown in future bookings.

Although if people are pulling back foreign travel then maybe LV and Florida will mop up some of that deferred travel. How did Vegas do in 08/09?

I wasnt here then but I've heard it was pretty bad, one of the worst hit cities. I hope we aren't heading for a similar situation

    https://news.harryreidairport.com/press-release/las-serves-more-than-4-8-million-passengers-in-march-2025/

Passenger numbers down 3.9% on last March and 3.7% in Q1.

Which Monday are you referring to? If it's the 21st that was the day after WrestleMania so it's not surprising the Airport would be busy.

Nevada gaming revenue drops 1.1% for March 2025; Las Vegas Strip down 4.8%

Puerto Rican's aren't white enough or something to get their own state even though they are all US citizens.

Or look at Philippines and Cuba when they were under US control or the other places that still are.

Not sure that Americans are pulling back on overseas travel just yet, but inward travel from outside the US has cratered and likely won't recover this year , between a general lack of trust in the US and the likely global slowdown Trump is going to cause.

was there 15 years ago, a certain 5* hotel you see in loads of movies for 100$ for suite, ah great times

    Grim tho for locals

Yeah, I passed through in 2010 and it was busy but deals were still very good.

It was a west coast driving holiday cutting over to Vegas for the flight home. Got some great motel deals as well travelled, $40 a night.

Wouldn't do it now no matter how cheap it gets.

It will be interesting to see what will happen between the Republican Congressional Representatives and Johnson, if there's broader dissent. He's manipulating parliamentary rules to prevent votes against Trump being brother by the Democrats currently, but what happens when reality starts to bite harder on his fellow party members? There are already voices speaking out against Hegseth, and when cuts to Social Security and Medicare are felt by voters, I can imagine things could get quite testy.

On Bloomberg discussing gdp figures for USA

    -0.3%
but if use the old way of measurement (yes whitehouse ordered change how gdp is measured) it be

    -2.5%

it was meant to be +2 +3%

I’m actually on the fence here. He may well be dumb enough to believe it, on the other hand he is certainly cynical enough to know that if he just repeats and repeats it, enough people will believe him. It’s like the “eating the cats and dogs” thing. He more than likely knew that wasn’t true, but he doesn’t care as he knows that literally millions will believe whatever bullshit he feeds them.

Over the past few days there have been at least two sitting Democrats of Committee chair level who have said they will not be running for office again. I'm hoping that this means that some-one of mettle withing the party steps forward for the empty seats and chair positions and starts the avalanche needed to put the proverbial up the GOP and force them to change tack.

It's time for a seasonal gift for the US around Nov 2025, a landslide over the Oval Office occupant after he has succeeded in wrecking the US economy and the life dreams of most voters regardless of party. The markets don't select who will lose and who will win along party lines.

If tourism bookings from abroad [outside US borders] are going downhill and the Admin succeeds in deporting all the "illegal" aliens, the hotel, casino and tourism industries are going to take a severe hit. Trump has been closing down national parks all over the US, firing their staff.

How much of the casinos, hotels and ancillary businesses are owned by US Co's and entities?

Its the Gulf of America until there's a plane flying over full of people that Trump wants to have disappeared, and then suddenly it's 'International waters, nothing we can do, our courts have no jurisdiction there'

The Trump sycophants just want to 'win' even if it means they are constantly contradicting themselves and each other.

Not so sure. I think he believes whatever he's told or witnesses on Fox. He's convinced tariffs will make America great for example.

Whats the swing in Trump's own bank balance?

Guessing it's up there with the Putin swing when suddenly all his sycophants became multi billionaires as the Russian economy collapsed.

What national parks have been closed down? Also, you're not getting a job in a casino hotel if you don't have proof that you are legal to work in the US, even in a job unrelated to gaming. Its heavily regulated, and a casino is not about to risk their license, so deportations won't affect that industry so much. The likes of construction is a different story altogether though.

    https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/29/port-of-los-angeles-sees-shipping-volume-down-35percent-next-week-as-tariffs-bite.html

U.S. retailers have about five to seven weeks before the impact of the curtailed shipments begins to bite, partly because companies stocked up ahead of Trump’s tariff announcements.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/29/business/trump-tariffs-christmas-china.html

This time of year is when orders for Chinese stuff are usually locked in. For the US 80% of toys and 90% of the rest of "Christmas" goods come from China.

Pinata's are already scarce due to tariffs on Mexico.

How long before the American public and media realise that Trump and his sycophantic cabinet haven't got a clue what the F they are doing with the economy and it is a total clown show?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,980 ✭✭✭yagan

If Trump voters learned nothing from his first term in which Covid was allowed let rip then they're not going to internalise anything now, regardless of how negatively it impacts their lives.

Direct employees are only the tip of the iceberg in the supply chain for any big business like a billion dollar casino

The laundry is contracted, the cleaners are contracted, the hookers are not exactly on the books….

Don't know how long it will take, but like all 'lets wait and see' strategies, by the time they'll have figured it out, it will be way too late to undo the damage.

It took brexiters half a decade to finally accept that they weren't going to get the brexit they were promised, and about half of these people still think that their vote was correct, its just that malign actors got in the way and sabotaged them.

In that half a decade, the forces that caused MAGA and Brexit have already shifted to screwing over the next generation of voters with a new brand of bullshit that they'll eventually figure out, a decade after it's too late for them.

Is there any hope? yes, but not for everyone.

As some have pointed out though, this is ten times worse than Brexit as it affects all parts of the US economy, not just certain aspects. This is disastrous stuff - a total clown in charge who knows nothing about economics or finance and he's there for the next four years.

And at the time Canada was a British territory and if you ask a Canadian they will tell you the forces were largely Canadian

How long before the various statistical agencies within the Federal Government get corrupted? Will there be fiddling with the Consumer Price Index, the monthly Job creation numbers, the tariff revenue statistics, …..?

If the administration is corrupt enought to fire the authors of a legally mandated climate assessment report, they are corrupt enough to threaten economists and statisticians who do do not do as they are told.

If you take a look at Wikipedia, you will see it confirmed that the army acting DC was exclusively British.

Combine this incident with Steven Miller interjecting during a presser and claiming the supreme court 0-9 vote was in their favour. I would question if his staff are just running the show and manipulating him into thinking they're good ideas and will happily let him believe stuff like this.

so it's possible that he's simply an idiot in a feedback loop through right wing media? Amazing, like something out of Idiocracy.
