I'm getting 23 stations today - 8Radio, CH80s, Q102, Freedom, LaserHits, Newstalk, Nova Xtra, Onic 80s, Onic Alt, Onic Country, Onic Gold, Onic Hits, Onic Kids, Onic Movies, Onic R&B, Onic Rock, Radio Rí-Rá, Rewind, Spin, Spirit, Sunshine Soul, TodayFM and UCB Ireland.

I'm geting drop-outs on Onic Alt, but otherwise things are sounding good.

In an ideal world I'd like to hear a classical station at a high bitrate (I'm sure the uptake of DAB in the UK was helped by the presence of BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM). Perhaps Onic could consider a classical/jazz station. Also Zenith would fill a gap with classic/prog rock. And TalkSport Ireland would be attractive to sports fans.

Of course a renewal of the RTE stations on DAB+ would be great, but can we imagine that they might go for it, having been once bitten?

Onic have two stations online that aren’t on DAB: Classical and Pride Vibes. I wonder why they aren’t on DAB, maybe lack of space?

Newstalk's bitrate is now 64 kbps, it was 56 kbps last week

    Both names have been fixed

    Today FM needs a space

64k seems excessive for a speech station when there’s music stations on 40k! But maybe Bauer are paying for the privilege.

My understanding is that stations are paying a reduced fee for carriage , normally this fee is proportionate to the Kbps you have acquired.

Regarding Onic ,if they wanted to add these services then they could reduce the space utilised by their other stations , however a Classical music station would require >64kbps , 128kbps imho .

What's stranger is Onic not adding Talksport Ireland , would have seen this as a perfect launch pad.

Newstalk at 64kbps - 32 kbps is more than sufficient, some talk services go as low as 16kbps.

Onic 80s seems to be the same songs on very high rotation ,is that the same for the other onic stations ?

It's a pity that there isn't a jazz/big band station broadcasting. A music mix including the likes of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Michael Buble etc would go down well with the older demographic (I'm thinking taxi drivers and truck drivers).

That's a great idea! I'd listen that sometimes myself.

A great radio station to add is Atlantic 252 which was relaunched in June last year. I'm sure RTE at some point will launch their own multiplex if this trial is successful.

Some thoughts on how things have played out…

My thinking is that there is an excess of 80's stations. CH80's, Onic 80's, Rewind, Laser Hits… bit of swimming in the same pool there, not to mention that there would be crossover with other genre stations. Definitely requires a classical music station (as Onic have online) and perhaps a dance music station too. I don't like the duplication of the FM stations, it's a bit slack from Bauer to provide them and not something else from the Go Loud app, imo. Fair play to Bay and Onic for trialling something new, as well as getting the erstwhile temporary licensees some valuable and extended coverage.

And finally, to FailteDAB, thanks and well done. A brilliant start and may the trial become permanent.

As is, this 'Atlantic 252' could go on the Newry DAB MUX, and it has a small bit of cross-border coverage into ROI too.

    - this is already carrying Radio Caroline on I assume favorable terms.

Local advertising could be inserted on DAB on the new Atlantic 252 to help pay for its carriage ?

This new Atlantic 252 is currently on DAB+ in the Manchester-Liverpool and surrounding areas according to:

I’m enjoying Rewind so far, taking a break from RTE Gold in the morning for now. Rewind’s playlist in the morning is more of my cup of tea, more 60s and 70s sprinkled in.

Driving from Sligo to Dublin this morning and picked up the dab stations from Longford. Will check on the way home how far the signal extends toward Sligo.

Is there any issues with the 5B in the North East region? Seems to have been a drastic cut in power or engineering works or off air for a day or so now, with 7c also popping up with no signal.

No issues in Drogheda Dundalk or Ardee. Not so hot in Carrickmacross though for some reason
