I haven't got any particular interest in BJJ but I want to learn self defence and not sure if pure bjj or mma is better. Just wondering if anyone here has used these two gyms and can recommend? I did a beginner krav maga course before and didn't particularly enjoy it so would like to try something else.

I know some of the coaches involved, and competitors from the gyms, and both are legit places to train.

If you are not particularly interested in BJJ, then iI would go to Compound and take advantage of the wider range of what's on offer.

If your goal is self defence, then any combat sport would be a decent choice for the physical aspects of it.

You can potentially defender yourself just with BJJ, or just with boxing, just with judo etc.

A well-run MMA beginners course probably is a good way to go.

Over time, a lot of people who are involved in MMA do tend to end up gravitating to exclusively grappling or doing BJJ. There are a few reasons for this, but one of them is that it does tend to be lower impact and easier on the body (in theory, at least).
