XC90 vs X5

    Hi All,

Which would be a more reliable car between the two please?

    2023 Volvo XC90 RECHARGE T8 ULTIMATE AWD

    Vs.

    2022 BMW X5 X-Drive 45e M-Sport Plug in hybrid.

I see both having issues and could cost significantly in terms of repairs. But at the same time, both are providing luxury driving. I would love to hear feedback from owners and other motorists please.

    Thanks 😊

My wife has a high spec 2021 BMW X5 X-Drive 45e M-Sport Plug in hybrid. She's had it for over a year and it's been perfect.

You are correct in that it provides luxury driving, it is very very comfortable. The battery is ok. 50km fully charged in winter, I've seen it hit 85 in summer. Can be thirsty when on engine alone, it is heavy in fairness. It suits our family well and luckily nothing has gone wrong. Upcoming service is looking like €500 in a main dealer. I can imagine brakes and tyres will be pricey when needing replacement.

    Can't comment on the Volvo.

Same guy in work has had 4 X5s over the years of different generations, my one criticism of them from a cost point of view is that they seem to suffer from weight related expenses, I imagine the PHEVs will be equally as affected, suspension and tyres mainly. Not that the tyres are wearing particularly quickly but they are 305mm on the rear, I think 275 or 285 on the front and as you can imagine, those are massive money.

Few other things have gone wrong too over the years but they could go in any Volvo or BMW or any car really, he tends to keep them for 5/6 years each.

He has just bought a PHEV 2023 X5 and no complaints so far, car is reliable.

I think reliability of both will be similar. These were expensive machines when new and repair/maintenance costs will reflect that irrespective of age.

    Would you consider a GLE350de?

I think the BMW edges it on exterior looks, but the inside of GLE can be nicer than an X5 if you go with a nice spec.

(A class down altogether I know, but I have a GLC, and I think the same vs the X3.)

The "egg shape" of GLE didn't appeal me. Plus it's difficult to find 2-3 years old GLE350de.

I'd 100 percent consider a Range Rover. They are much superior vehicles.

    Very comfortable to drive.
But give a lot of trouble. I wouldn’t touch one.

Not as pointed styling as the X5, but I wouldn't go so far as "egg shaped". There's over 40 of them between '22 and '23 on Carzone.

Just thought it was worth a mention, as it's in the same segment, but if it's not your cup of tea then fair enough!

Some are indeed good looking. And its an unusual to see them in diesel plug in hybrid. Most if not all are petrol plug in hybrid.

The only form of plug in hybrid for that era of GLE is diesel. Only very recently this year has it been available as a petrol.

Normally you would include the Q7 in these comparison

We had X5 but older one and recently swapped to Q7. Both lovely to drive but the Q7 I find is a better drive and nicer.

Between the X5 and XC90 PHEV's, I'd say the X5 edges it for reliability - especially if it's one of the last of the 45's and doesn't have a sunroof.

We have loads of X5 PHEV's on the fleet, and quite a few XC90's. We would have had more issue with the X5's but nothing too major. Fewer issues with the XC90's but they tend to be bigger issues, and on a few occasions have been ongoing issues that took a while to fix.

    Very helpful.

Most likely X5 is the winner in my situation.

    Thank you

buy an approved used one from a BMW dealer to get 2 year warranty. Warranty is worth its weight in gold when things go wrong.
we have had four X5’s and they all needed work under warranty. Without it the bills are big.

    Hi There,

I just bought another new XC90 after having one since 2019. They are a great car with no major issues. If you have tall kids I would go with the Volvo as it has more head and leg room in the back. If you fancy saving a few quid on a 2022 car, my one is for sale, based in Limerick.

    I've driven them all.

Including a brand new XC90 and 2024 RR. No comparison. RR hands down for performance, comfort and capability.

Honestly dont knock it until you try it and then let me know. Seriously.

I’ve driven both too and Range Rover is streets ahead for sure but reliability is obviously an issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,144 ✭✭✭masterboy123

I have driven RR too and yes it's very comfortable. But long term reliability is an issue

The Range Rovers give a very smooth ride on the back of the towing company’s flat bed.

range rover sport more in same class as bmw and volvo - hybrid wouldnt be as problematic
