You're going to the wrong garages then @CoBo55. Ironically I found Cupra in particularly amenable to EV trade-ins, in fact offering me a brilliant figure to switch out of my EV into a new Cupra over Christmas.

I didn't bite then but am reconsidering now that the sales booster incentive is back.

Here in Wexford we're caught in the Bolands cartel, I had it down getting the puddle lights replaced and the salesman who actually sold the car to me couldn't have been more disinterested he just walked away… I'll give Corbett's in Waterford a shout I had great dealings with them before.

    Bolands….say no more.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

I have to say, the Cupra Born is certainly an EV that’s totally sellable and desirable secondhand - it’s held its price much better than say the VW ID3- maybe it’s because there are less of them around but it ticks so many boxes- good looking practical reasonable acceleration etc

Sad to see some people here having difficulty selling their secondhand EVs- IMHO, I believe dealers are keeping the market artificially high - buying from owners at low ball prices and making super normal profit.
It’s a strange market right now but dealers aren’t helping refusing to take EVs as trade-ins

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,945 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Or was it refusing to take an EV as a trade in at a price the customer wanted?

I think CoBo has made it pretty clear that dealers just weren’t interested. Its not uncommon for dealers to not accept EV’s as trade ins. Petrol and diesel cars usually have a good bit of equity after a PCP deal and are easy to trade back in.

I found the same. I was looking at a kia ev9 in wexford and they wouldn't take a tesla as trade in, just flat out no. They said they would take our Ora in trade but the value was derisory (at the time it was 1 year old with 10k km) and would have left us in 10k of negative equity.

Other dealer salespeople would say they would take a tesla but then the trade in valuation person would come back with a no once I was looking at terms. This was from multiple main dealers, I was cross shopping Kia EV9, mercedes EQE/EQS, Jaguar, Landrover, even audi. EDIT: Actually the only dealer willing to accept a tesla at a reasonable value was the BMW dealer in enniscorthy. This however was to be against an i5, which I baulked at the price of… I went to view before I knew what the cost was as it wasn't announced.

It's not universal as I've seen people trade in EVs but there is definitely an undercurrent of dealers not taking EVs. Maybe it's an urban rural divide? I'm not in the GDA either.

    That's a 28kWh. The 38kwh has a different front.

A friend of mine who lives in Belfast is going to see that car this afternoon. One thing is there's no mention in the ad of whether the car has the 64kWh or 39kWh battery. I'm pretty sure there's a way to check that on the car itself, rather than just asking the salesperson, but can't remember what that might be - is it the first digits of the VIN or something like that? Or will it be printed on a door pillar/under the bonnet etc?

Re: dealers not taking EV trade ins or giving "derisory" offers, I was watching this video from a UK dealer regarding selling a 3 year old Enyaq to the trade I'm don't know how accurate this is but it seems a plausible explanation rather than just lambasting car dealers for being greedy.

To be clear I wasn't lambasting anyone, just documenting my own anecdotal experience.

If I can't trade in I can't buy a new car, so that dealer lost the sale. If (and I havent watched the video) they would prefer that than taking an EV in then so be it

The gist of the video is that the leasing/finance companies projections for depreciation were too low and as a result they are now looking to claw that back from new customers which is affecting the used car market and trade ins.

This below might work…… but if he requests the dealer to have it fully charged… and on arrival the guess-o-meter shows something in the region of 260-300 miles, then it'll be a 64kWh. I'd expect a 39kWh to show a fully charged range of less than 200.

The details will be on the V5 regardless

Had a chat with my friend explaining all that and a bit more. She's a 70 year old woman who has never driven an EV before, but was quite taken with the couple of short spins she had in our eNiro and at the fact that we've been able to do a few long trips without incident - it goes against the FUD stuff she'd been drip-fed before. "But how did you manage to charge when you weren't at home? I thought that was really hard, finding a charger." "I wouldn't like to be too slow pulling out of the junction where I live going onto the main road, is there enough power to nip into a gap or is it like a milk float?" "What do you do once the battery fails?"

She regularly drives the 60 miles/100km between Belfast and Ballycastle, sometimes twice a week (and currently spends over £100 a month on diesel), but even the smaller battery Kona would suit her fine for that. She has talked about wanting to do a few more trips around the country now that she's retired, maybe 5 or 6 times a year, so I did warn her that if she's planning on buying this Kona then it would need to be rapid-charged a bit more often on those trips and that my own preference would still be the bigger battery version for that reason. But she didn't mind that at all once I explained that there are multiple charging hubs on the motorways she'd be using (A1, M1, M6, M7, M8) and that she should be able to charge at or near her destination easily enough, even if it might take 30-45 minutes at a time - she'd rather stop 2 or 3 times on a trip where I might only stop once. She's on her way to see the Kona now, so I'll see how she gets on!

That's not quite the point he was making. The finance companies were putting such high depreciation on the car that the payments were going to be excessively high. The current value of the 3 year old Enyaq was £28k, they were then dropping that to £8k after another 3 years.

This kind of high depreciation was likely to continue in the UK as there would be high volumes of EVs coming off mobility schemes and company plans very soon and flooding the market.

Will be interesting to see how that develops, but it clearly is a UK thing.

Here for anyone interested. Posting on request from OP as they're having some trouble posting the link. They'd take 14k from someone on boards if interested, but will be going for trade in in the near term if no interest.

The only cars selling used are the cheap ones. It’s not just an ev issue either, ice cars are not selling well either. The market is still ridiculously inflated and every car selling platform is full of cars not selling unless they are cheap. I keep a good eye on the market and change cars very frequently and have about 50 cars saved on DoneDeal. I check the list every week and more often than not nothing has sold. I actually think it’s a great time to buy a used ev, there are plenty for sale that have lost 50% of their value and are now worth buying.

I would replace "cheap" with realistic. Used cars have been overpriced for a while now. Basically, if it's priced right, it will sell

Thanks Bawnmore you're a gent- I've figured out the bug which was stopping me from posting.

A few pages back I purchased a tesla from a garage and traded in the MG. The Tesla has had some minor issues and the garage have been frustratingly slow at getting back so I've pulled the plug as too many red flags with the car. I'm expected to get the MG back this week and willing to let it go for 14k to someone here if they are interested.

This makes it the cheapest MG ZS EV in southern Ireland by about 3k. The car itself is in perfect condition and heres the ad from the garage I'm having trouble with. I want to move quick on this as I have potentially another Tesla lined up and I can't be without a car. The garage have agreed to swap the car back with me and I am just waiting on final confirmation since this morning.

My friend has bought that Kona! 😃 Apparently it had been a little-used mobility car, which even still makes me wonder how the miles ended up being so low, averaging out at around 3 miles a week - maybe there was a stage when the previous owner didn't get any use out of it at all for a while due to health reasons, or something like that. Anyway, she was able to trade in her 7 or 8 year old Renault, either a Kadjar or a Captur (whichever the smaller one is?), which she said herself wasn't in the best of nick, for £5600, bringing the cost to change down below £10k. Last month a dealer only offered her something like £3400 for the Renault, so even with the Kona being the smaller battery version I still think that's a serious bargain she has bagged! Thanks again @Exiled Rebel for putting it up - another nail in the ICE coffin …

Hey all, sorry for putting in my own car but at 17k this is an absolute bargain I think.

Probably cheapest model s facelift with some warranty left in the history of boards :)

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/tesla-model-s-75-facelift-with-warranty/39453973

I don't even need a quick sale at this point, just need someone that will commit to buy it so that I can take my new car due tomorrow with confidence that I'll have my car sold in the near future.

Any questions, let me know! Ideally contact me on Whatsapp, my number is on the ad.

    My pleasure.

Those cars were about £35k new.

Managing to offload an old Renault and bagging an EV with 200 mile range with less than 1k miles on the clock for sub £10k is a bargain in my book.

I was looking at a Born VZ recently and both Cupra Wexford and George Corbett will happily take my current Born as a trade in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,945 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

There was a comment above where a poster thought it was trading a Cupra into another marque's garage, but actually it's trading a Born back into a Cupra dealership that doesn't want to know?

I'd be moving dealers pretty damn fast - that's a bit cheeky to be honest - they're happy to del with you 12 months back on a new car but now don't want to know? C'mon.

If it's any help, Brady's Cupra in Castleknock in Dublin seems to be a sales outfit you can trust, and they have a healthy used Born stock that regularly turns over.

“ice cars are not selling well either.”

I recently dipped into the ICE market for a few days as a seller of a bangeromic - the car I was selling was very reasonably priced and sold in days - equivalents are still there 2 months later asking nearly 1500 more than I was asking - I’m not surprised some cars aren’t selling- asking prices in many cases have no rhyme or reason

Yeah as a regular seller of petrol/diesel cars in the €7000 to €15000 price bracket, the market is pretty much as good as its ever been. Obviously Covid times were crazy but generally speaking it’s still fairly busy out there.

That being said, I did manage to sell a €19k EV privately the other day within about 2 weeks so that says something.
