So my contract is ending on June 7th and it will be 80 Euro pm for 1gb Broadband (not fibre). I am currently paying 65 which looking at others is way too much. I called VM to cancel. They said that others are using shared lines and the speed they are providing could be anywhere between 0 to 2gbps whereas with VM its different and that their customer who has switched to eir or vodafone regrets etc. I am a network engineer myself so cant really see why full fiber would be less reliable than coaxial but just wanted to ask people who are on Eir or Vodafone their experience with speed and reliability of the service after the switch

I've recently switched the other way. Vodafone to VM. My only reason to switch was getting a slightly better deal with VM than Vodafone.

Having said that, I found my Vodafone connection to be very reliable. I very rarely lost connection (while local neighbourhood whatsapp group was regularly full of people complaining that their VM was down on various days).

My 500mb connection with VM gets me about 550mb in the real world, while Voda 500mb connection got by about 470mb in the real world. So not much of a difference. Could simply be down to a newer router.

While the line is shared for residential services so too is Virgin Media plus the fact it's a coax connection to the cabinet which isn't as reliable as full FTTP and also slightly increases latency. I have always gotten my full speed running speedtests on FTTP with eir, Sky and Digiweb through OpenEir and SIRO with no outages at all. I am using my own router however, using the provided router with eir, Sky, Vodafone etc. usually causes some kind of issue. Digiweb & Pure Telecom do use a FritzBox router which seems much better than most others.

This is the sort of thing providers regularly say to scare you in the hope that you will stay.
Have you checked with any of your neighbours, who are with other providers, to see what speeds they are getting?

Did you ask VM for a deal?

that’s total scare tactics, bull, If you can get fibre in your area it’s superior to Virgins coax lines.
