Another dreadful day here in Wexford. Started off wet then stopped for a while and now back to rain this evening

Drizzle and light rain on and off all day here at Dunshaughlin. Grass is really starting to grow but the garden is so wet, need at least 3 or 4 warm dry days before I can give it another cut, however next week loots promising.

Wasn't too bad between the deluges

Got some gardening done and we got a walk in this afternoon

Thankfully the rain has stopped just in time for the weekend. April certainly was a game of two halves. The trees have transformed from winter bleak to green in a week. Except for the poor ash. The apple and cherry blossoms are glorious. The birdsong is just magical in the mornings. I just love this time of year. So much promise and more and more light every day.

If we get sun and heat next week, the growth will be explosive.

Lovely Morning walking along the coast in Cahersiveen, pic taken at 09.30. Sunshine and passing cloud with a light breeze, quite mild now.

Turned into a lovely afternoon here in NCD.

Real heat in that sun and ideal in sheltered garden.

Took the opportunity to get a bit of gardening done, assisted by the 3 year old.

I posted that on the 23rd when the charts were showing more of a mixed bag. Thankfully a better outcome now!

    Suggestions of 23-24C on Wednesday.

Highest April temps on record in Ireland

    26 Apr 1984 25.8C

    27 Apr 1984 25.0C

    25 Apr 1975 24.5C

    17 Apr 2003 24.4C

    21 Apr 2011 24.2C

    24 Apr 1984 24.2C

    18 Apr 2003 24.1C

    23 Apr 1984 24.0C

23C or greater in April has occurred in Ireland in at least 1945, 1975, 1984, 1987, 1990, 2003, 2011 and 2019. So quite uncommon. 1984 alone had as much as 4 days of 23C+ shortly after Easter which was 22nd April that year and the national April record too.

Them April record temperatures are not exactly sizzling hot compared to what September can do. Maybe its down to sea temperatures rather than sun altitude?

I see Meath is potentially the hot-spot on Wednesday, we're still sizzling after beating the Dubs !

Yes it's primarily down to thermal lag. There is a lag between the sun's energy reaching the earth and the maximum temperature potential being achieved. Ireland is a bit strange with its record max temperature in late June but generally speaking, our warmest climatological time of year on average is mid-July when you get a balance between the sun's altitude still being high in the sky and cooler temperatures have been modified further both on land and sea.

Even October's record high temperatures aren't that much different to April due to thermal lag despite its average solar radiation being just over a third of April.

You also got to consider the potential however if we had a perfect storm scenario of everything coming together to achieve the highest temperature - dry and baked ground, unbroken sunshine, offshore or minimal breeze, long fetch from a warm source, high thickness airmass etc. This is rarely met. The UK seen a good attempt of this in July 2022 when 40C was achieved for the first time, at not one, not two but seven stations. The previous record had been 38.7C. Before 2015, the July record was just 36.5C. So the record jumped by nearly four degrees in not even a decade. Whatever your view is on the bigger evil (that I won't derail this thread with), this to me shows that the true potential falls short on a lot of our temperature records.

Another example of potential I can think of is the UK April record is 29.4C and that occurred on the 16th April 1949. All the other days in the second half of April have a lower record, often much lower like as low as 25-26C. In fact, you have to go to the 12th May for the earliest 30C on record in the UK - nearly a month after the April record which is only 0.6C cooler. This is in spite of the sun ever getting higher in the sky and the overall temperature on the increase. This suggests that there is so much more potential and theoretically 30C would be easily achieved in April with a perfect storm scenario as previously outlined. The same way I think 30C is not out of the woods for being theoretically possible in Ireland during May where our record is 28.4C.

27C in the house at the moment.

Can anyone recommend an air conditioner before summer proper summer begins.

The Harmonie model (which Met Eireann uses) is showing UHI effect in west Dublin city on Wednesday and a high of 25° so if this does indeed pan out, the max may be reached in Phoenix Park and/or Casement. The Harmonie model is suggesting a light southerly breeze over Dublin, away from the immediate coast so it looks to be suggesting that the Foehn effect will be aiding the spike in temperatures.

    image.png

It suggests temperature in into the low 20's by 10:00 on Wednesday!

I usually find Harmonie often in these scenarios to be slightly exaggerated compared to what ends up happening - though our station network is limited so maybe not the best evidence to say this is a definitive statement.

25C in Dublin in April would be exceptional, more so than the country as a whole. The county April record is only 23.1C at Glasnevin on Easter Sunday 2019 (21st April). Dublin has the quirk of having a higher record March (23.6C Trinity College 28th March 1965) temperature than April. Could this finally be broken?

Is met.ie on the fritz? I'm seeing 26 degrees forecast for my area in coastal Cork on Wednesday on the daily ticker, but the maps are showing barely 20 on that day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,630 ✭✭✭appledrop

Try refresh, mine did the same and I was like whoa, went back into the day again and own to 22.

    Still I'll take 22 in April😁

    Wednesday is looking warm!

    image.png

Warm across the south on Thursday but much cooler air quickly heading south. April heatwave temperatures for England.

Harmonie model output still going for a 25° in parts of southwest Dublin city for tomorrow morning. Will be interesting to see how things pan out but I don't think there any climitalogical recording stations situated in the area expected to receive the highest temperatures and if it's not recorded at an official station, it didn't happen.

Will we be getting power cuts on Thursday like Spain since extreme variations in temperature now causes it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,348 ✭✭✭✭Cluedo Monopoly

    Valentia 21C

    Shannon 20C

A lot of other stations with 19C.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?
