How many TDs do you think yesterday’s crowd would manage to elect?

    The answer is none.

Anyone who has been paying attention online could see this march was going to be big. The tide is turning and those in power know this. This was very evident in the lead up to it, where there was various hit pieces in the media and online about the organisers and some in the nationalist movement. Conor Gallagher had one last, trying to demonise the far right, as did the Irish Mail, Sunday World and even Phoenix magazine running pieces to smear people. We've seen it on social media and various forums too, posts claiming there'll will be trouble and the far right are looking for another Nov 23 style riot. 'Keep away from Dublin on Saturday', 'don't bring your children or elderly' was the narrative being spread.

I'll reiterate my previous point, haters are gonna hate, there was never going to be trouble at the march, the organisers and the attendees want change in how the country is run, its a simple as that. The only ones talking about trouble were the left, and those against us.

But the days of labelling anyone who questions immigration or wants a better Ireland as 'far right thugs' is over. And the establishment and leftwing opposition can't stand that.

It is reasonable though to label those cheering on McGregor’s words as pro rapist.

”But the days of labelling anyone who questions immigration or wants a better Ireland as 'far right thugs' is over.”

No it isn’t. The vast majority of that crowd yesterday were far right thugs. They’re just newer far right thugs that have been brainwashed by the old ones.

Were you at the protest? I was in town before and after it. The people I saw draped in Irish flags are the type of people I’d cross the road to avoid normally. Now, I didn’t see everyone so my sample size is small.

Are you suggesting that they were cheering his words to show their opposition to the rapist?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 460 ✭✭slay55

they are not connected. Not sure the point that you are trying to make , or really care.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,150 ✭✭✭Damien360

Sunday Independent didn't even have a single word about the protest, it didn't happen for them.

The Sunday world on the other hand managed to call it Maga Gregor. So apparently it was a pro McGregor protest. No mention of size of protest but has a picture of a woman shouting at someone.

Very odd take on the whole thing by the press.

Conor McGregor is an idiot and it's regrettable that he has any involvement in any aspect of public life.

He's using this issue as a vehicle to rehabilitate his public image, but what he's really doing is undermining the message that Irish immigration policy is a mess and needs serious solutions made by serious people and not violent thugs like him, a man who couldn't give a damn about the average Irish person.

A video of a convicted rapist was played to the crowd yesterday. The crowd cheered. You are claiming that is not a connection. Would you like to clarify how it is not a connection?

So you readily admit you didn't see everyone, yet you claim they're all far right thugs.

I was at the march, and walked peacefully while proudly waving the national flag alongside thousands of normal citizens, nothing angry or thuggish in what I encountered.

BTW, thanks in advance for crossing the street from me.

It was arranged by a guy who used work with Nigel Farage who also had the support of the national party. The National Party's leader was only last week tweeting celebratory tweets about the birthday of Hitler. The protest had a speech from noted rapist Conor McGregor... So if these are the kind of figures you're happily gonna turn out for then there's not much of a challenge in terms of demonization.... It's a movement led by scum and some types are all too happy for them. Also just remember, how posters promised that the general election would be a win for the anti immigrant movement, it was not...

Honestly , you’re making no sense at all. The protest had nothing to do with rape.

No need to reply back to me either, I’ve clarified your strange questioning and you still aren’t able to grasp it.

Mcgregor is a cvnt ergo we should continue to treat Ireland like some sort of clown car for asylum seekers regardless of a stark lack of housing, infrastructure and services.

"the vast majority of people who go out to vote in general elections are middle class homeowners."

…and remind me again what the biggest issue in the general election was?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,634 ✭✭✭downthemiddle

McGregor addressed the crowd yesterday. You cannot separate him from what happened yesterday. He is part of the message. The crowd were happy to allow a convicted rapist speak on their behalf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,588 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

Also let's say McGregor was saying something the left agreed with and he showed up at a march, he'd be booed off the stage cause he's scum... The fact that people are happy to ignore the fact he's a rapist is not a great sign of the audience.

Then there's ignoring the fact that the likes of Justin Barrett is an out and out Nazi. There's a lot that posters seem happy to throw to the wayside.

please don’t lie about what I said. I said the vast majority of them were far right thugs, not everyone. I’ve no idea if that includes you.

I think it's fair to assume that a lot of these people were openly spouting misogyny 7 years ago and only pretend to care about women to push their anti-immigrant agenda.

I’ve been trying to figure out who’s behind this protest. Every name I come across is a far right thug and scumbag.

Irish Freedom Party leader Hermann Kelly was among participants of the rally, along with anti-immigration activists Derek Blighe and Philip Dwyer. Independent councillor Malachy Steenson spoke at the protest, as did fellow Independent councillor Gavin Pepper.

National Party councillor Patrick Quinlan also gave a speech.

And does Mcgregor represent everyone who feels the current immigration system isn't working?

How can you determine that people are far right by seeing them holding tricolors?

Rugby and football matches in landsowne road must look like the Numermberg rallies to your extra sensory fascist detection senses.

The same left who sport Che Guevara Tshirts and feign ignorance when confronted with the brutal reality of the history of Socialism?

Yeah, they never get anything wrong.

This is the problem with extremists, they only see the faults with the other side.

I'd love to see a calm rational movement to improve the whole of Irish society where scumbags like Mcgregor don't get a look in, but this country has been on a slippery slope of extremist tribalism with a nasty dose of civil unrest since the Jobstown water protests.

Mod: A reminder that anecdotes are strictly prohibited in this thread - nobody can verify (or frankly cares) if you were or weren't at the protest yesterday or if you saw protestors or not so it's not permitted to post in that fashion. I am going to let a number of posts that breach this rule slide on this one occasion. Any issues with this my PM inbox is open. Thanks.

From those in attendance, I've yet to hear anyone complaining over the fact McGregor spoke, in fact they seem to be pretty happy that he spoke. So I guess they can excuse the rapist part? I don't particularly like Guevara T-shirt thing but I'd say it's substantially different to platforming a rapist as a celebrity speaker...

Those same Donnybrook residents would protest against social housing for Irish people just as quickly.

Confined in that area by the Gardai. Same situation as on any left-wing demonstration where you'll see anarchists, greens, socialists, SF, Soc Dems and Labour alongside each other.

    What poll, when and where?

You're also aware that the most significant poll (General Election, November 2024) gave absolutely nothing to the parties opposing migration and the Exit Poll put it way down the list of concerns. Modern Ireland ain't vexed about immigration.

If there are some undesireables attaching themselves to the anti immigration side of the argument it should not matter a jot.It would be similiar to when Climate change is mentioned deniers cite the activists who throw paint on famous pictures as reasons to shut down discussion.

I have said before support for any situation ebbs and flows and its my belief when we hit harder financial times the irish electorate will not take kindly to the excessive spending the Government have committed this country to with regard to immigration support and will be aghast at the ramifications that support has for their own financial well being.

One of the supporters of the march posted a video with an English woman narrating it so you can include Britain also.

5,000 is a third of the crowd that'll be at Olly Murs in the 3Arena on Tuesday. So you can come second on X-Factor, have a career in decline (no top ten UK single for 11 years) and still draw three times as many people than a protest that a few people think is important. Perspective folks, perspective.
