Man Utd are a shambles behind the scenes. Liverpool before Houllier/Benitez arrived would be a closer comparison.

Rick Parry used to head off to play golf during the summer transfer window, David Moores used to abdicate responsibility for making decisions so when Parry wasn't around no decisions were made. Roy Evans signed box to box midfielders like Oyvind Leonhardsen and Jason McAteer only to use them as wing backs because he didn't want to drop the not so dynamic duo of John Barnes and Jamie Redknapp. It was no surprise when teams used to slice through the midfield.

During his tenure, Houllier instilled a sense of professionalism amongst the players but there was still no connection between the academy and the first team. Steve Heighway refused to concede that the purpose of the academy system was to develop players that might one day play in the first team and Parry/Moores didn't want to get rid of him. Benitez had to wrestle control of the academy from Heighway and brought in staff that would implement a single vision across the academy teams. Prior to that the underage teams played what ever style their coaches wanted or believed was best for their group to win games.

Parry/Moores never grew the commercial side of the club. The one positive thing that Hicks and Gillette did during their tenure as owners of the club was hiring Ian Ayre as Chief Commercial Officer in 2007. That began the process of modernising the club's revenue model. We were 15-17 years behind Man Utd in terms of building the club's brand and commercial revenue.

Ayre understood the value of making decisions using data which is why he worked well with NESV/FSG. Being data lead is what enabled the club to grow and apart from the horse trading with Brendan Rodgers years, the club's transfers have been largely successful since 2010.

Man Utd can still crush every other team in the league commercially but they have a chasm to cross in terms of modernising the football side of their operation to catch up to those same teams. We've yet to see any sign that data led decisions are being made at the club, they have continued to just throw money at the problem. They went to great lengths to get Dan Ashworth from Newcastle, didn't consult with him on the decision to extend Erik ten Hag's contract only to sack him months later. Ashworth was sacked because he was opposed to Jim Ratcliffe's choice for the new manager, that's the sh!t show that Amorim walked into.

Amorion still has a worse record than Hodgson had here. I'd have to say our team then was way worse than what United have now.

Christ....Oyvind Leonhardson…those were dark days alright

I have no memory of him. He played 37 games for us.

Amorim has a worse record than Hodgson, but the argument could be made that he inherited a group that play as individuals and not a team.

Hodgson inherited a squad with a real team spirit, which included Reina, Agger, Skrtel, Carragher, Kyrgiakos, Aurelio, Glen Johnson, Martin Kelly, Mascherano, Lucas, Gerrard, Babel, Kuyt and Torres.

Amorim would probably have gotten far more out of that group than Hodgson.

That’s a very generous interpretation for Amorim. I don’t agree personally.

Let’s see how United do next season. If they back him in the transfer market and buy Gyokeres and one or two more quality players then they will be back in contention for Europe next season I expect.

Spurs available at 11-1 for anyone that needs an 'insurance' bet against the unthinkable happening and Liverpool not actually winning the title Sunday.

Why is everyone giving amorin a free pass because he dosent have his players, the players he inherited are actually performing worse under him and he can't seem to win a game under him, it's all his system but surely he can make do with current players and find a way to win with them except using this 3 5 2 excuse, look at Everton and wolves with new managers, they are playing way better

My thinking exactly . A good coach will train the players he has not moan about the ones he doesn’t have . These are professional athletes who if told and practice what you want , they can do it .

So they don't sack him. 😀

I for one think he's doing a great job.

He basically had a bit of a purple patch and was snapped up on that. A mid table premier League footballer at the time, that we pounced on. We kept signing those sorts of players under Evans and didn't get the top signings over the line. Clearly we weren't paying enough.

The people who brought the club back did an outstanding job in such a competitive world. The 90s showed it'll never just be handed to you, everything has to be right.

Someone, one day will get a hold of utd and do something with them but that person doesn't seem to be near the club at the moment.

I think that they as a club would be better off establishing a data analytics department and rebuilding the academy system to establish a team identity. If that's to be Amorim's vision of 3-4-3 then the club is set for a few lean years. Splashing money on players that will 'fix' their first team hasn't worked out for them and I don't see how it will this summer either because they don't find value in the transfer market.

To demonstrate my point I'll refer to the counter pressures graph lifted from Reddit.

    Untitled Image

Manuel Ugarte : 6-7 counter pressures per 90 minutes, < 1.0 counter pressure regains

PSG signed Ugarte from Sporting for €60m in 2023, Liverpool were reported to be interested in him at the time but didn't make an offer. It turned out that he wasn't dynamic enough for PSG's midfield so they made him available for transfer in 2024. That should have been a red flag for any Premier League team. However, Man Utd signed him for an initial €50m with additional clauses that mean PSG will have recouped their spend on the player.

Carlos Baleba, Tyler Adams and Yasin Ayari all have fewer counter pressures but more regains. Brighton signed Carlos Baleba from Lille for €27m, Yasin Ayari for €4m from AIK. Bournemouth signed Tyler Adams from Leeds for £20m.

Baleba, Adams and Ayari are players that Liverpool's analytics team have been following for years. Ayari chose to join Brighton over Liverpool in 2022 because they had a prepared path to the first team for him. Adams is a player we were linked with since his time at RB Leipzig.

Ugarte doesn't represent money well spent when compared to that trio in the centre of the graph all of whom would have cost a fraction of the price. Bournemouth also signed Marcus Tavernier from Middlesbrough for £10m, another bargain that has stats comparable to Ugarte.

Bournemouth and Brighton haven't needed to throw money at players and that is where Man Utd have hamstrung themselves, they need a radical change of approach to their player recruitment to get out of the hole. They have had 12 years of pissing money away in the hope that something will click and now the club is hemorrhaging due to obligations on over inflated transfer fees and player contracts that no other club would be willing to take on.

We're about to win the league tomorrow yet the conversation is about that lot.

Who cares about Amorim and Utd, long may it continue with them being sh!t.

Nunez has always got the support of the fans but he doesn't do himself any favours, obviously he knows he is out the door in the summer but this is poor form from him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,180 ✭✭✭Damien360

Context is important. He gets into spats online with trolls and says the wrong things or uses sarcasm which never translates into written form very well. I would like to see the thread before that comment and why he said it.

He still needs to be moved on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,235 ✭✭✭giveitholly

In that case he has no business on social media and would be better advised to stay off it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,186 ✭✭✭Iscreamkone

They are only on social media to make money not friends

This is the longest weekend ever...

I just want to see the team dancing around enjoying themselves in front of the crowd with Dua Lipa music in the background.

Why would you want bother getting into argument with trolls online when you're a famous footballer? What a waste of energy.

It's bad enough when you're not famous. 😂

A bit dramatic,no...we could lose our remaining five games,, arsenal lose the next three and we might be nervous they get a draw their last

Sorry,,had a few, you are correct , either way a bit dramatic,we need one point from a possible fifteen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,576 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

It was tongue in cheek. Obviously it's done, but I feel like most of us have built up to it being confirmed tomorrow, so I really hope it is. I'm excited

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,349 ✭✭✭✭martingriff

No worries. Also a 10 goal swing hope they don't have any player called Thomas in there team

To be fair, if we lose five and Arsenal win four then there's at least a nine goal swing!

But neither of those things is going to happen 😉
