My son's 2010 SEAT Ibiza power steering pump needs replacement. He uses the car for work so urgently needs it fixed. The local SEAT dealer can't take it in until end-May at the earliest. Can anyone advise whether this is a straightforward job or is it necessary/advisable to use a SEAT dealer to carry out this work, please? Are there any specialists in this kind of work in Cork?

Car is located in West Cork but could be driven up to the city, as the power steering failure is intermittent. Thanks for reading.

Any independent garage will be able to replace a power steering pump it's not difficult. You'd be mental to go anywhere near a dealer for a car of that age

That's all basic VAG stuff. Any indy should be able to do that.

If it is intermittent, how can you be sure it is the pump? Be careful driving

it if the power steering is coming and going.

It's been intermittent for ~3 months. We finally got it checked out last week as part of the yearly service and the mechanic confirmed that the problem was the steering pump. Problem is that he can't fix it for about a month.

Why would you bring a 15 year old car to the main dealer? Just go to any independent mechanic ..

If you had bothered to read my original post you'd have notes a sentence that reads: "Can anyone advise whether this is a straightforward job or is it necessary/advisable to use a SEAT dealer to carry out this work, please? "

A helpful poster has already answered that one for me.

My second post mentions that my local independent mechanic can't fix it for about a month. That's why I contacted the local dealer.

Any more questions, feel free to ask.

It's not a crazy difficult job to replace but the pumps need coding and they are not that easy to find a good one, they are huge money brand new.

My local mechanic has finally managed to source a s/h pump, so hopefully, the problem will shortly be resolved. Thanks to all who responded.
