Need to change my car

    Hi guys…

Kind of a double scenario here..

Currently have a 132 i40, but it's starting to give trouble.

I'm looking to change, so considering a 2017/2018 Kia Sportage. Now, doesn't have to be a Sportage, but I'm looking for something high-ish off the ground, as the i40 is cripplingly low to get into.

Also, because of back/leg issues, I'm looking at an automatic. But not 💯 necessary.

Are the Sportage a good buy? Any known issues to warrant me to avoid them?

    Is the Peugeot 3008 worthy?

My budget will be a Max of €18k.

Ohh, also might help if the engine had a bit of poke,, so maybe 130bhp or upwards.

    ...

Also, as mentioned, the i40 is giving trouble. I think the clutch is going. Sometimes hard to get it into gear.

Today, it started running very rough, so I think an injector has popped, or ceased to live. Also, sometimes it goes into limp mode, or stalls on take off. At times, the check engine light comes on, but I usually clear it. The code that shows is P1186 (low fuel pressure).

Is this car worth fixing up? It's got 155k(miles). NCT out since last month. Mechanic can't look at it until week after next.

    Appreciate any advice..

    Thanks.

    Toyota CH-R

Are they a good drive? Comfortable? Bit of power, maybe??

More importantly, but maybe a bit silly with it being a Toyota, but reliable? Anything to watch out for?

Kia is the sister company of Hyundai. 2017/2018 Sportage would have the same 1.7 diesel engine and gearbox as your old i40 and the Tucson.

Peugeot 3008 can be problematic especially as they age. 1.2 petrol should be avoided due to a poor wet belt design which will inevitably give problems. 1.5 diesel can give problems with DPF and AdBlue.

CH-R would be a safe bet but the rear passenger area is very dark and a bit cramped due to the design so could be an issue if you have young kids. Most of them are petrol hybrids so plenty of poke for what they are.

Ahhh, damn pity about the Peugeot. Damn nice looking car.

So yeah, it's looking like the Toyota. No bother with the darkness in the back, all our "kids" are adults now.

    Thank you for the advice.

CH-R rear space is a joke with that tiny little window and massive chunk of plastic trim on the inside. Also door handle is awkward.

Such design was understandable is Alpha Romeo of the old days but not in the SUV located at this height, totally unusable for children.

Just noticed that with the CH-R would be totally unusable with kids.

Alternatively, what about something like a Honda Vezel. Nice car in my opinion and looks to be a bit roomier than the CH-R. Not a mechanic or anything so wouldn't know much about how reliable they are.

Honda Vesel are all Japanese imports. Check with insurance first, garage selling it and your local mechanic who will be fixing and servicing it for you .

Thanks guys.. Something more to consider here I suppose.

I don't have kids as such, as in not smallies, but I do have adult kids,, so if it's going to be tight for small kids, adults are definitely going to be a squeeze.

Back to the drawing board.. Hmmmmmm..

Maybe a Honda CR-V if you can find good value in one. My Dad has a 2015 Honda CR-V that he barely put a penny into and it's going perfect. Lovely car to drive. You'll have no space issues in one of those

Honda CR-Vs are rare and overpriced for what they are. On the OP's budget they will be looking at an older model and most of those will be diesel or have high motor tax.

Mazda CX-5 petrol is worth looking at if you can find one but avoid the diesel version at all cost unless you like making trips to your mechanic or Mazda to figure out what's wrong it.

Some lovely Mazda's out there alright. Knew they were troublesome, but wasn't sure if it was the petrol, or diesel.

    Yes, Max budget is €18k.

That'll be including what I need to put into the i40, if it's worth putting money into.

Even with the synchro issue on my Tucson, I still love it. Surely you'd get a 2018/2019 executive model for the money you have, same with a Sportage, I think K3 or K4 are the higher end models

Unfortunately, yeah, lol. I'm still being drawn to the Sportage. Plenty out there. And well within my budget too.

I'm limited to mostly 2017, as while I could get a 2018, most of them are a higher mileage than I'd like.

Only thing that let's me down with all of them is the very low horsepower.

Most are only 114bhp.. And it's a lot of vehicle to be hauling around with that.

Guys, what the best, and quickest way to transfer €17k/€18k if/when buying a car?

If I'm travelling up Country to buy one, I don't want to make multiple trips, so would much prefer to go view/test drive the car, and hopefully pay, and take it away the same day.

    Is this possible??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,327 ✭✭✭MrFrisp

You are allowed to transfer that amount in one go?

I thought it was only €5k per day.. Or maybe I'm wrong.

Would you consider KONA electric? 201 bhp, 0-100 in 7.9 seconds with 400km range, so loads of poke. Also bullet proof in terms of reliability.

2021/2022 can be got in the north for sub €17k.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,327 ✭✭✭MrFrisp

If anything, I'd prefer hybrid to electric. We do a lot of mileage at the weekends, plus, no home charger.

Spending what we are on a vehicle now, leaves very little to be getting a charger installed.

Not sure of limits, but I know its at least €40k! I sold my car and the buyer transferred that to me at my kitchen table. My friend sold his car a few days ago, and the buyer sent him €11k instantly, and then drove away.

Fair enough. The cheapest on usedNI is €16.6k with 68,000km on the clock.

While the initial outlay for that car + charger install would be a squeeze on your budget the running costs are about a quarter of a petrol/diesel. Once out of warranty these cars can be self serviced which is another saving to be factored into the running costs.

    Thank you.

Will definitely take this into consideration.

Out of curiosity,, I know the second hand market is nuts at the moment, so would/could I expect any sort of discount on a €17/€18k car?

Maybe €500 off, or would I be dreaming?

    Hello folks.

Found this thread and would like a few neutral opinions if ye have time. Looking at a 'new' car at the minute. Sweet cahuna, the prices are……%&"** Anyway, was looking at a few in and around my general area. Im kinda restricted to within a 100ish km for looking so that does limit me somewhat. I've decided to probably go with a dealer (I know more money) but given that this money involved, I'd like to at least have some pretence of even a limited 'comeback'. Anyway, what I'm looking for is opinions on a couple options I have.

Golf TDI 2.0 GT (not GTi) 2018 109000miles, €16850. In a legit dealers, has 2 full yrs NCT and theyve done a good bit of work including TB etc or 2018 Focus Zetec 1.6 88000K, €15850. Im assuming similar re NCT etc. Both are wildly over budget and not nessesarily the most practical for me lifestyle wise, but both lovely cars and for me most important rather than bells and whistles, is a decent level of reliability. I look after any car I have and dont change regularly.

Would value a few opinions. I am veering towards one over the other, mainly because I have seen it and was impressed. Not had a drive yet.

One final Q. Anyone know why a dealer might 'hide' the full reg of a car? Lots of other cars on lot have full reg visible but some others have dealer plate on.

    Cheers in advance.

Thanks for hijacking my thread kid.. Appreciated.. 🤣🤣

Personally, if it was me, I'd be in it for the Golf GTD any day of the week. Outstanding performance from those engines.

Maybe slightly high mileage, , but I think the price isn't bad for that car to be honest.

LOL, Mr Frisp, sorry about that, not intentional. I did try to search to see if there was a more 'suitable' one but it just kept drawing me back here…😂 I appreciate your pov and thats actually where the head is going. Getting the wallet to agree is another matter. Good luck with your own search. P
