Ah sure I knew that, probably could have worded it better, just wondered why he didn't make any appearances (to the best of my knowledge) during the league... Injury, college-club commitments or in the bold corner maybe

what scutter below in kk. Things are bad if that what’s MOD has to work with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,264 ✭✭✭bcklschaps

Yeah, very poor. Never looked to be able to match Kilkenny's intensity.

Expectations and reality for this team going forward need a serious reset. Finishing third in Leinster looks like hard work for this team this year and the next three or four as well. Serious work needed in u20 grade getting the minors to make the jump and then transition from u20 to senior.

that’s it exactly . If we get out of leinster season will have being a success . There should be nobody under any doubt that if we get out of tullamore next week with a 1 point win it’s a good result .

Awful Stuff. Apart from the two mannions and morrissey, no one really looked up to the level required. Some of them looked like bad junior hurlers. The inability to work in the tight and the poor delivery of ball to the forwards is really not acceptable at this level.

The worst thing is, KK were well off it today and still beat us pulling up.

I'd be inclined to agree with your analysis of things. Today, and I'm afraid to say, more days in the future like it, are down (imo) tomorrow atrocious record at u-21/20 over the last decade or so.

We've reached 1 or 2 finals, in that grade, over the years, but have they gotten destroyed in them (Waterford in 2016 and Cork in 2021). Until we can, successfully, bridge the gap between minor and u20, then days like today will keep happening.

Oddly, I'd have said that if Donoghue was coming back, he probably should have taken the u20s as opposed to the seniors and build from there.

Some people will be saying we'll get relegated (I don't think that will happen), but it could very well happen that we won't get out of leinster.

The u20 grade this year, and for the next few years, HAS to be our main priority if we want to see a functioning senior team in the years to come.

As regards today, Galway were comically bad wrt their first touch, interplay etc. Their Galway team are not set up for the "Limerick type" game of short passing etc. Why we continue with it baffles me, tbh.

We all realise that the players aren't good enough to contest an all Ireland yet but it's the manager responsibility to ensure that they have a good first touch and are physically fit and we failed in both departments. 1.2 came off our lads not able to pick up the ball first time. So hopefully this week we can work on the basics and just try to get the ball into the full forward line as fast as possible.

FFS there is 24 senior teams, 14 intermediate and how many junior teams. If the first touch of so called county players is as bad as what we’ve seen this last league season and yesterday’s match then Galway hurling is in freefall. The starting 15 that MOD picked is in his eyes the best Galway has to offer then in my opinion he needs to look at where hurling is now and has his tactics kept pace with hurling styles now. We conceded pucks outs to cork and limerick in the league and got hammered. Regarding the county board they need a root and branch reform to give players the best chance available. Cronyism and old rivalries need to be addressed and put Galway hurling at the front of reform. Johnny Coen and Cyril on Galway bay yesterday after the match made me think I was going daft. They gave all the blah blah instead of calling what yesterday’s performance was absolute scutter. Maybe they don’t want to upset players management but surely the harsh truth is what’s needed to be said.

The players first touch is not the responsibility of the manager, a good first touch should be a given at county level and if a player hasn't got a good first touch by their early twenties then they are unlikely to get it and F all a county manager can do about it at that stage. Now there might be an argument that the wrong players are being picked for the county squad, but, that's a different issue and unlikely to change this year.

I don't think we have the players atm and will be in the doldrums for a few years, for some reason we haven't been able to translate underage success to the U20 grade, never mind senior level and now we are beginning to struggle at underage level also, we are at the lowest ebb we have been for a very long time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,337 ✭✭✭obi604

Very very true. A first touch is something you should have at 15 years of age.

There's a little bit of niggle there at the end, a LITTLE bit of niggle 🤜🤛

you would have to be happy enough with that . Got minutes into a lot of players . Hopefully Kelly ok as first time in a long time I thought he looked nearly back to himself . Mcdaid just dosent look as confident taking a score hopefully he finds his beat form he will be annoyed with couple of wides he had . Be good if Walsh is back in contention for connacht final . Maher and Darcy very good and Conroy is Conroy . Expected a lot bigger test from the Rossies I would imagine they will be disappointed . We will certainly get a harder game in a fortnight . Mayo will get a lot of slack after yesterday and that will have them raring to go in 2 weeks .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,393 ✭✭✭O.A.P

Definitely happy with that display. They were on top on inch of the pitch and I expected a lot more from the rossies too.

Mayo will surely show us exactly where we are at though. They got a scare yesterday, it's in Castlebar and they would love to stop us getting 4 in row.

I expected a lot more from the rossies too.

Rossies with different management might have made it a different game. It was evident Galway were operating at a different level when it came down to tactics, composure and decision making.

Galway contained their forwards well and dominated midfield; where Roscommon were probably in 5th gear, Galway barely needed 4th gear. They aren't a division 1 team with that display.

The kickout strategy Galway had, shown by Peter Canavan last night, is new and must be the brainchild of Mickey Graham or Dave Morris. Good to see progress there. They cleaned up on kickouts yesterday.

AAh Come off it. The first touch is the responsibility of the manager, they have been training since last November and come first round of championship, they couldn't pick the ball, so it's either one of two things, 1 not doing enough ball work or 2 not playing enough of inhouse hurling matches. What the hell were they at out in Portugal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,297 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

That's a major problem for all teams at all levels, not playing enough hurling ( same in football), can run like horses and lift weights, but, neglecting the basics of the game. First touch should be a given at county level, too late at that stage to try to learn it. Would agree to an extent that manager needs to get the players sharp and focused, but, first touch should still be there regardless, if a player can't pick a ball he has no business near a county team, that's basic level stuff.

If you go back far enough in this forum, all the talk was that our players weren't fit enough or big enough. Now they can lift weights and run like horses but they don't have the first touch! Come on, let's get a bit of perspective. MD had a massive panel this year. He looked at everyone. No player can say that they didn't get a chance.

The reality was this match was never going to define our season. I traveled to KK not expecting a win but I did want to see a close match, intensity and to come away with a better idea of how we play. I saw none of that. MD was livid throughout the 2nd half. Shaking his head and throwing his hands up. That's worrying. It must be infuriating to play on the FF line on this team. We just don't use them.

Tullamore next week will be interesting to say the least.

Shefflin got lots of abuse for sticking with the older players.

They tried lots of younger players, and guess what, they were and are nowhere near good enough.

This played out in the league this year and on Saturday. Hammered by Tipp, Cork, Limerick and now KK in the last 2 months.

Then what in the name of fook are they at with the underage development squads. That’s on them if they’re not coaching or pushing those players. Oh yeah I’m on a developmental squad they think they have it made. Probably young lads on it that never got benched or fooked out of it for not listening to instructions. Ruthlessness needed from now on otherwise it’ll be longer than 29yrs for the next one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,333 ✭✭✭cosatron

if shefflin persisted with these younger players, they might further along in their development. In hindsight shefflin was the wrong man at the wrong time and that falls on Bellew. There wasn't another all ireland in this group, especially with JC retiring. We just have to weather the storm and hope, A. Niland, Rory Burke, Callanan, Jason Rabbitte, Jonah Donnellan, Trayers, Joshua Ryan can transition into decent hurlers in the next 3 or 4 years and as everyone is saying, make a serious effert at u 20 level for the foreseeable future

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 984 ✭✭✭Butson

Bellew is a great PR man, I'll give him that.

There is nothing wrong with hurling in Galway according to him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,407 ✭✭✭SqueakyKneecap

We were always going to fall back at some stage. A lot of these lads have been on the go for the best part of a decade and even though they might still be delivering at club level or beating the brakes off the youngsters in training, MD is going to have to make some tough calls on legends of Galway hurling in the winter. We also can't be expecting Rory Burkes or Aaron Nilands to immediately step up at senior.

Any idea when tickets for the Connacht final go on sale?

End to a disappointing season for our u20 footballers lastnight in shield final loss to Leitrim in kiltoom. Round robin is great initiative at this age group as gives players plenty of games and galway had a much a changed side out lastnight. Very poor return from this group when you consider this age group won the all ireland u17 3 years ago and not even able to make top 3 in connacht. Manager Derek Savage wasnt on the line at all lastnight as unavailable due to work commitments and Ja Fallon took the team which seems odd. Be interesting see if he stays on for last of his 3 year term next year. Big work going on in academies but u17 and 20s have fared poorly in connacht by our high expectations over past 2 years.

Same team for the hurlers, except Daithi Burke in for Grealish, for the Offaly game. Either Donoghue and the team accept that the Kilkenny match was a "once off" or else that's our strongest team.

I'd hope it's the former and not the latter, but I'd be unsure. Can they be as bad tomorrow evening as they were against Kilkenny??

Is it too late in the day for Daithi to pack in the hurling and give the football a year or two before he hangs up his boots ?
