I think it’s really case by case given the vast possible discrepancies in performance, but I’ve definitely gone for an unstable 60 over a locked 30 at times. FF16 felt like sludge to me at a stable 30 compared to the (wildly inconsistent) performance mode, and gave me a bit of a headache honestly given its particular visual makeup.

That said I haven’t played any of the games with more compromised visuals in performance mode, like the new Assassins Creed. Though I do think developers should really push for 40 FPS modes where possible, as that’s oddly a night and day difference from 30 for me and a welcome compromise.

60 FPS is so much nicer. Even before I knew or cared anything about frame rates it was always buttery smooth controls and display that would make a game stand out.

Also, if you try an OLED display (TV/monitor) you'll really notice 30 FPS in game mode. And it's brutal. It's not your TV, it's low frame rates.

Once you go 60 or more you can't go back. Best to leave the low frame rate games on the shelf until a higher frame rate version/patch comes out.

Didn't think I needed another reason not to buy and Xbox.

Once you go true black you never go back - OLED users.

Looks like every third party launch title except Cyberpunk will be a key cart for Switch 2.

OLED all the way. My CX is still going strong but may soon need an upgrade.

A Blade Runner Supermassive game has been cancelled apparently. Wouldn't be surprised if that studio closes in the next couple of years.

Xbox cloud has been released for LG TVs. If you have an OLED from 2022, (mines the OLED55CS6LA) or a smart TV from 2023, check out the game portal app and it should now have a new splash banner at the top. I couldn't actually search and find the app but clicking on the banner took me to it.

Played Atomfall and it wasn't enjoyable. Not terrible, but for shooting you need it much smoother. But Balatro was great. So while it's not a replacement for a console it's an option.

I've a 48" C1 that I bought off Richer Sounds in September 2021 and it's still 100%. Mainly used for TV but did have the PS5 hooked up to it before I sold that.

I bought a 42" C4 in February from Richer Sounds to use as a PC monitor and PC gaming. It feels a big improvement over the C1 so far and is a great size for sitting at the desk or on the sofa bed in a small room.

I'll be going to 77 whenever my 65CX packs it in. Still 100% but has a lot of hours on it in 5 years.

I've a C7 from 8 years ago, and it still looks better than most of the TVs I've seen in other people's houses. There is a square on it that appears when the right shade comes on, but it doesn't bother me, as it's only when the entire screen is displaying that one shade.

I've a C9 from 5 years ago but I'm not gonna lie, I'm a little disheartened in how much burn in there is on my TV from the young fella playing fortnite. To be fair, it's not even massively excessive hours he put in but the life bar, weapon icons and a few other bits are so burnt in that it almost looks like some put sellotape on the screen in places when I'm watching sports on the same TV. Considering I spent 1600 on the tv when I got it, it's honestly put me off a little bit paying big money for another one

I got a CX about 4 years ago and to be honest I still haven't a clue about all the settings. Could probably improve the quality.

Same as setting HDR on PC that's hooked up to it since video looks off when I turn it on.

I've a C2 TV and it does its own pixel cleaning when on standby, or if I've been on the same channel/input for a few hours the next time I turn on the TV it'll recommend doing its pixel cleaning. Maybe that's only a feature introduced in the last few years though.

I've a CX too (bought a few months after the PS5 came out) and honestly it has held up amazingly well. I know people with the more recent C models and they're a pretty minor upgrade for the most part to my eyes, other than brightness, so I see no reason to upgrade in the near or medium-term future unless something goes very wrong in the meantime!

Though there is real satisfaction in getting a new TV and turning off all the motion smoothing options on every input and app :P Thank god for Filmmaker Mode.

I had a 2017 LG oled (bought in 2018), suffered really bad burn within about 4 years. Got rid of it last year, replaced with a mini led as I'm not spending big money with a fair chance of that happening again. To be honest gaming is where is notice the lack of oled the least, it makes more of a difference with high end TV and films.

Do newer OLED TVs not come with any warranty against burn-in? Modern monitors do, and they're probably more likely to suffer from burn-in than tellies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,400 ✭✭✭sniper_samurai

The new models aren't as susceptible as they dim the area around persistent objects on screen like a DOG or HUD, the LGs do this extremely aggressively though, it will dim the whole screen on football matches due to most of the screen staying the same shade of green, and can't be adjusted outside the maintenance menu on models prior to the C3.

Regular mode (not game mode) on my C1 makes Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom look very smooth, 60 FPS like. Really it's just a fluke for these games, and probably some lag, but it saves me having to buy a Switch 2. 😁

I don't see any burn in on it, but I don't game that much. Also, the TV has a few tricks like shifting the screen occasionally by a few pixel Hopefully it'll last me a good few years. I got it in a sale a few years ago. Usually the previous models are discounted when the new one comes out. It's 48 inch. Big enough. I can sit closer if I want it to look bigger. 😁

WebOS is incredibly slow on it. It's hard to believe especially since the hardware can do 4K 120 FPS HDR.

I wish it came without a TV tuner so I could dump my TV license. For some reason large monitors are much more expensive than the same sized TV.

Haven't made the switch to OLED yet. Desperately want to mind but it's a good sized outlay for something I don't actually need right now…

AFAIK burn in is far less of an issue with the newer C models - I have none on the CX after 4.5 years of daily use, though I don't use it for sports and wouldn't have 100s of hours in any particular game.

That said, I'd still be reluctant to use an OLED as a desktop monitor - even with a warranty - as that would have a lot more static elements in daily driving. And yeah it definitely seems to have been a much bigger deal on older OLED TVs.

I've been using a Sony 42 inch A95 as my monitor since October 22, no burn in issues as of yet. Like the rest of the newer OLEDs burn in protection is much better between dimming and pixel shift.

LG CS6 here. I have a set of cheapo usb led backlights on a low brightness. When they go off I know the pixel clean is finished. Dont think I can ever go back to LCD.

I've an old ultrawide LCD monitor and I hate it. Briefly had a LG OLED and it was incredible but since I moved in with the girlfriend it's used for the soap operas. Been on the verge of getting an OLED monitor but was afraid of burn in as I'd use it for office work as well and now there's a wedding a honeymoon coming up, so I can't justify a new screen until after.

LCD really is an awful technology. It was cheaper and could be made lighter and thinner than a crt but the picture quality has always been terrible.

At least with micro LED tech on the horizon there is a tech coming that will avoid burn in but also be way better than OLED although I'm not sure why it took LED technology so long to get to this point, it was always the endpoint of flat screen TV tech, so much so that when those "LED" TVs came out I thought it was micro LED tech and not just LED back lighting.

    I don't understand.

Maybe I do ... you have some USB back lights connected to TV USB socket. When the TV powers down after pixel clean the lights go off.

Nice! Backlight and pixel clean done indicator. I know a lot of people leave tvs on standby ... but I usually switch off once I hear the pixel clean done click. And I use a desk lamp for backlight.

You are killing two birds with one stone.

Yeah the click is audible but I also like the visual indicator of the clean being finished in case I need to do something while it's running.

Micro LED is still years away, so I'll likely go with QD-OLED when I replace my rubbish IPS monitor later this year.

RTings have been running a burn in test for ages at this point, literally running a TV with the brightness turned up 24/7 for years, and there results are fairly surprising, to be honest. The OLEDs are probably the worst with burn in, but not but a major margin, as every type suffers from it.

The biggest surprise is the failure rate on edge lit TVs, with almost 70% dying. Back lit TVs don't seem to have the same strain, as the lighting is more spread out.

Breath of Fire IV makes it to PC through GoG. They really have been doing a great job of getting Capcom stuff on their store:

This is also the game which features a volcano with massive ass cheeks. (You read that correctly).
