Nearest MUX is Ballyguile according to their map. I guess it's on the mast overlooking Wicklow town I don't think there's one on Kippure.

It depends on the bit rates used. The two national commercial UK multiplexes have around 29-30 stations each because they are using 32k for some music stations, and 24k for some talk stations. Newstalk probably doesn't need any more than 32k, so there could be room for another 10.

Maybe Newstalk want to be in Stereo?

Last night the channels were operating at 40kbps. Can’t remember what the initial trial was but I think it was higher

64kbps in the initial test , some on 32 kbps.

40kbps is just enough to give stereo and audio wise is a significant drop from 64 kbps.

You can use 32k with parametric stereo but the optimal bit rate for HE-AAC v2 is 48k.

For those of us outside of the DAB trial will Onic have an app for their new collection of stations?

Not sure about an app, but you can listen online via their web site…

    https://www.onic.ie/player/onic-hits

You can also add the direct URLs to any streaming device or player you may have…

    https://live.onic.ie/stream-hits
    https://live.onic.ie/stream-gold
    https://live.onic.ie/stream-80s

    etc.

I see that they have been added to the airable.fm database for listening through an internet radio such as a Robert’s Stream 93i.

Talksport Ireland is not on Dab+ , it's not listed as launching on Dab+ either.

Would have thought it would be an obvious choice for a launch, being a popular format, untried on Irish airwaves (unless you include BBC 5 Live).

Was listening to Nova during the day, the audio was pretty poor at 40 kbps and definitely not the same quality as via FM or streaming.

Today FM is back, as well as Sunshine Soul, which I presume is a Sunshine 106.8 spinoff. 21 now.

RTE will probably do their own at some point in the future

    21 channels at 40kpbs …..

Hoping the quality improves to as before.

Mono......stereo is possible at 40kbps , it looks like quantity is being put ahead of quality, undoubtedly a cost decision,

The use of low bitrates make Today FM carriage questionable , their Dab+ will be vastly inferior to their nationally available FM service.

I was hoping for some imagination, Bay with CH80s,Nova Xtra and Sunshine Soul ,and Onics with their 10 channels are showing what added value Dab+ can bring, unlike relays of Today FM,Spirit and Newstalk.

Today FM, Newstalk and Spin have been removed, they must be listening to you! 😂 Scan now down to 18.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭kazoo106

I think that 95% + of DAB listening will be in vehicles, The BBC Radio 3 audiophile does not apply in this model with road noise etc etc.
I was listening to Newstalk earlier and it was vastly superior to FM.

40kb/s ps strereo is adequate for vehicles and this trial is adding to an amazing choice up here in the NE (150 stations on the last scan)

The quality of the Failtedab 40kb streams also exceeds those of the UK equivalent bitrates on the SDL and D1 muxes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,486 ✭✭✭mackersdublin

Before the Bauer stations were removed, both Spin and Today FM were 48 kbps and Newstalk was 56 kbps

Q102 is 64 kbps, while Spirit is 32 kbps. The rest are either 40 or 48 kbps

sound quality seems noticeably better than FM with me anyway atm

I would say closer to 99.9% will be listening in cars. Your point re the BBC Radio 3 audiophile is good but eg if you can choose between Today FM on FM or on Dab+ you would always choose FM for the superior audio quality (assuming the processing isn't awry) ??

Newstalk at 56kbps is in Stereo (?) Is unusual in that it's FM carriage is Mono.

The UK streams......16kbps for some commercial stations.…

My car radio doesn't have DAB. I must look about getting a bit of kit like this, but which has DAB+.

Was able to pick it up in the car yesterday, coverage was mixed.

When driving through the UK last year I was able to timeshift and rewind live radio, will that feature be available here.

I would disagree as Spin and Nova are not National and cannot be received in some parts of the DAB network. Would be good to hear some Dublin stations outside of the Dublin area like, Classic Hits Radio, Spin 1038, Nova 100, IRadio and Sunshine 1068 rather than spin off stations

Maybe it's old age, I much prefer the DAB processing than most of the nowadays overdone FM processing. No overdone RDS pilots or 19kHz distortion

Depending on where I am in the gaff, I'm getting signals on 5B, 7C and 10D.

I'm just wondering now which muxes are coming from which TX site. The data below is on the map on their website… Note that the frequency for Mount Oriel is 10B, but I'm getting something on 10D. The other frequencies are for block 11B, not in use.

Mount Oriel is definitely on 5B, absolutely blasting in up here in Drogheda.

UCB and Ri-Ra added overnight, that’s 21 stations now.

Sound quality is surprisingly good and far better than the initial tests which sounded bad with significant "swirling" effect due to compression.

Some of the Onic stations sounding extremely loud and distorting badly this morning however.
