Olive Oil on sandwich = funny looks from deli workers and other customers

I recently went to a local Supermarket deli (big mistake on my part) and ordered a baguette with sun dried tomatoes and ham.

The deli assistant asked me if I wanted “butter” or mayonnaise. I politely declined both, instead asking for a drizzle of olive oil which is what I would normally do.

The deli assistant looked at me like I had two heads. “Wahhhh, olive oil? On yerr sammich?” “We don’t do dah, buhher or mayo, dah’s all”.

I politely declined the sandwich and left.

The working class men also queueing alongside me also found my request amusing.

Why are delis so scummy in Ireland?
