Switching from Virgin cable broadband to Sky

As Sky and Virgin have I believe, started their agreement for Virgin to carry Sky on their broadband network just wondering does it mean that I could expect that my current Virgin cable connection and Hub will be replaced by a Sky Hub, without any drilling or rewiring.

If anyone has any knowledge of what’s involved it would be much appreciated as won’t move provider if it’s not just a case of swapping out the hub.

    Many thanks

Have switched to VM fibre broadband recently and was told by the installer that the VM fibre broadband connection is also available to Sky and Vodafone.

He said if you switch to Sky or Vodafone there's some extra work to be done with an extra box fitted I think.

Has anyone any experience of such an installation and what it entails or looks like.

The only change that should be needed is the hub/router to be changed - the infrastructure stays the same

An ONT just has to be fitted on the wall as Virgin Media’s FTTP doesn’t require one for their Hub 5x as it’s built in and the fibre just connects straight to it. While with Vodafone and Sky they need the fibre to connect to an ONT first and then an Ethernet cable from the ONT to the provided router.

Here’s what it will look like (Click the date “Sept 5, 2024” to be brought to the thread with the picture) -

This would be true if it wasn’t Virgin Media’s own network but they do not have an ONT by default as it’s integrated into their Hub 5x when going through their own network and an ONT is only installed if you switch to Vodafone or Sky.

So the ONT connection is from the original VM point, no extra drilling am I right ?

That picture is from the thread I mentioned above.

No there shouldn’t be any drilling to outside but there will be drilling to hang the new ONT to the wall, next to the existing network termination unit.

You've been a so helpful regarding my enquiry.

Do you think it's possible not to mount the ONT on the wall as could see a situation where I could move between Sky and Virgin depending on the offer at the time.

On contract with Virgin at present at full price so will be looking to move to Sky or maybe Vodafone for a lower price.

They might let you just have it on a table but they would be pushing to wall mount it. They would still need to call out anyway to provide you with it, they wouldn’t just send out an ONT in the post. Once you have the ONT then it should be straight forward to just switch between the three with no call-outs needed.
