I was watching the documentary about the Oklahoma city bombing on Netflix and it occurred to me how MAGAs roots stretch all the way back to WACO and how anti government feelings really exploded after that event. And subscribers to conspiracy theories also went through the roof.

The bombing itself was carried out by a handful of redneck yokels, with strong anti government sentiment. And the most disturbing thing was that many of the people affected by the bombing or were first responders ended up in the same anti government cult together 30yrs later.

People who despised Timothy McVeigh and wanted him dead are now voting for a party and movement which runs on many of the same ideals as he had. And they don't even see the irony (or juxtaposition) in that.

Possibly, but I feel that you might be giving them a little too much credit in terms of planning. I suspect that like anything associated with Donnie, the DHS/ICE etc are now operating with practically no direction from above, leaving border stations to behave as they wish. Once you give anyone that much power over people, the temptation for some to abuse it can be far too high, and so I suspect you get these stories of likely harmless German teenagers getting the full processing treatment that are usually reserved for serious detainees. That’s instead of just forcing them over to a return flight for the minor infraction of not booking a hotel yet, which is what usually happens in nations that are this strict about lodging details on the Entry Card.

That event was likely as simple as an officer on a power trip, which isn’t likely to end until leadership actually returns to their various departments. Since stories like these have already damaged the US Tourism Industry (and will likely continue to) I suspect that someone might convince Donnie to get the finger out, or at least get him to acquiesce to functional leadership in the needed departments.

But of course, this is Donnie we’re talking about. He’s not likely to care or even understand the business case for promoting tourism in The States. He is afterall, completely sh*t at business. So US tourism is likely toast for at least the next 4 years (maybe 2 if the Dems win back Congress and sort out something).

Anyone who works in hospitality here and deals with them on a regular basis would tell you the same. A lot of them are just not very bright. Which would be fine if they didn't elect someone as dumb as them. You also seem to have it in your head that 49.8% of Americans voted for Trump.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,834 ✭✭✭✭briany

Unlikely using the normal method of altering their constitution.

Seems like the plan to get him a third term would centre around around the wording, ie "No man shall be ELECTED to the office of president more than twice", with the argument being that it doesn't say not SERVING more than twice.

Not even 49.8% of the electorate voted for Donnie. 90 million voters did not vote in 2024. That is a larger cohort that either the voted for Harris or Donnie.

So the even GOP voters don’t amount to the guts of 49.8%, keeping in mind also that not all US Citizens can vote, or are old enough to do so yet.

I would agree the essence of Tony’s statement but add the kinder subtext that these voters are for the most part encouraged to not use their critical thinking skills. Either though pop-culture, peer pressure or piss-poor education. They will gleefully consume naked lies as the truth and willingly vote for an absolute failure of a human being like Donnie, and that’s because a lot of them haven’t got that little switch in their head that says «Hey, wait a minute…is that right?»

I’d argue that a lot of US people don’t have that skill by design in the Red States. Why on Earth would the GOP wish to educate their electorate to the point of making them actually do their jobs?

The rest of it is apathy. That 90 Million who didn’t vote could have turned the map mostly blue if they wanted. It’s that apathy that needs to be sorted, and when enough people are not apathetic the GOP lose. Don’t put too much truck into the vote share that got Donnie into power, overall they still represent a minority in the US.

Donald Trump's policies proving effective at the Border as CBP release data for March 2025.

A 95% decrease in some sections compared to March 2024. Nice to see policies actually working for the American people.

“U.S. Border Patrol’s apprehensions along the southwest border for the entire month of March 2025 were lower than the first two days of March 2024,” said Pete Flores, Acting Commissioner of CBP. “This is a testament to the tireless dedication and vigilant service of the men and women of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, who work every day to keep our country safe. Their commitment on the front lines plays a vital role in securing our borders and protecting American communities.”

Below are key operational statistics for CBP’s primary mission areas in March 2025.

As recently announced, CBP recorded its lowest southwest border crossings in history in March, demonstrating that operational control of the border is becoming a reality and enforcement measures are yielding significant results. Aliens are receiving the administration’s message: if you cross the border illegally, you will be deported.

March is the second consecutive month in which U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) averaged the lowest daily nationwide apprehensions in history at approximately 264 per day in March. This is 20% lower than the 330 daily nationwide average apprehensions in February and 94% lower than 4,488 per day average from March 2024.

In March 2025, USBP apprehended 7,181 illegal aliens crossing the southwest border between ports of entry. This constitutes a 14% decrease from February 2025 when USBP apprehended 8,346 aliens, and a 95% decrease from March 2024 when USBP apprehended 137,473 aliens.

CBP’s Office of Field Operations (OFO) nationwide encounters averaged approximately 673 per day in March. This is 3% lower than OFO’s 693 daily average encounters nationwide in February and 81% lower than 3,464 per day average from March 2024.

Based on the state of America, I wouldn't find it exactly surprising that a third of Americans are a mix of incredibly bigoted or likely to fall for a snake oil salesman. A third of the electorate happily elected for a felon and rapist. I wouldn't say that's a great sign of a population tbh. And they operated under some delusion that he'd make them rich but now they get the consequences and those who voted for him or didn't bother voting, they're facing the consequences of it along with the rest of the population. But they've definitely not got some genius deal maker.

Also that border patrol copy and paste is straight from the administration who are a pretty terrible source of information...

No, the ones who confuse voting percentages with population percentages qualify as dumb as stones.

Great to see the Border situation finally under control isn't it?

Makes you wonder what Border Czar kamala was upto for the last 4 years though doesn't it?

Not deporting people without due process was one thing she was up to.

Probably not engaging in illegal policies... Any comment on the US citizens who have been told to leave the country including immigration lawyers and in one case a physician? The fact you seem to be actively avoiding the fact that he's constantly breaking the law including basic constitutional rights says a lot. You celebrate tyrants.

Reminds me of the following adage :-“ if it’s put out there into the public domain that you have a reputation for getting up early then you can stay in bed all day”

Is it though? Trump has succeeded in making the sweet pumpkin pie turn rotten and no one wants a bite of it anymore. Soon, he'll turn on his own and try to make them stay inside "the wall" and eat it lest the stench of rot become too overbearing. Who is going to farm the next pumpkin and bake the next crust so he can have his fill? It certainly won't be cheap imported labour. Will the locals do it for pittance?

    Is it?

You are confusing apprehensions with crossings.

This isnt surprising given you confused percentage of voters with population.

any update on trumps deportation numbers? For the largest deportation effort in history, they have gone very quiet on it

I am scared by the strong possibility that Trump's gang can do that and install a dictator of their choosing. That's why I am hoping there is a constitutional blow-up between SCOTUS and Trump which will force Republicans to side with SCOTUS and the constitutional side of politics and oust Trump from power. Forget the TWO Trump camp followers on the SCOTUS bench, they have sunk their future into his.

I am hoping that Trump will continue to seek confrontation with many of the federal agencies [and their staff] who will end up with them having to choose between him and a prosperous future for them under an alternative management, that he continues to radicalize people all over the US against him and his swamp-gang. Watching him rowing with the Fed chairman should be enough to scare the bejasus out of the economists and the Wall St traders, making them accept that he doesn't care about anyone but himself, and that those he's brought into the White House to service his ego must also be got rid of, not left behind when he's ousted from power. No hangovers in positions like commissionerships of federal bodies to quietly restart the federal Trump family engine - lifetime bans from public office or back offices.

Pushing people to the extent that their only recourse is to use force to recover what he has taken from them, that is down to him alone. It's worth remembering that he has chosen to use words to incite people in the past to do so when he saw it as advantageous to him. There MUST be a punishment for him and his ilk, alongside a memorial to his actions so people DO NOT FORGET HIS CRIMINAL ACTIONS.

The fact that this administration has got the Border under control in a few short months is quite the achievement.

A great thorn in the side of many an administration, which got to its acute worst ever state under the watch of no other than his opponent in the General election just passed.

The Democrats are in a real mess aren't they?

    Is that winning I smell?

Don't most US presidents represent a minority of the US population when you factor in their vote count as an overall percentage of eligible voters?

anyone one else think referring to the ‘chosen one’ as ‘Donnie’ is nauseating……?

Have you been keeping an eye on the US economy? The GOP and the US public are in a big mess long term if he keeps this up... You guys are very selective in terms of what Trump antics matter or not.

I know it's laughable, appearance-wise, with his control of the front pages but NO ONE is omnipotent. People must re-learn to accept that to be a fact.

I'm not sure what you smell but it's not winning. It's like someone throwing scutter at a wall. It looks unsightly, so they paint the rest of the wall brown. But their wall is still covered in excrement. That's what you smell.

As a half-yank, I can vouch that we are indeed the dumbest, most insular people on the planet. We are cultureless, arrogant and obsessed with personal status and wealth from our earliest years. We are ridiculously racist and have zero consideration for those weakest in society.

Freedom? We swear the rest of the world are in chains while plenty of our own work three jobs just to try to cover rent. Get sick, you're f*cked. We have no concept of what Freedom means, only the propaganda drip-fed into us from birth. All those ridiculous school mornings that begin with a pledge to a bloody flag in the corner of a room. Ridiculous.

Kaepernick highlighted how 'conditional' the idea of freedom is. Absolutely 'conditional'.

Education is at best an afterthought, in most cases ignored. More emphasis placed on having dance moves than being able to critically think. Nonsensical. Cost of education alone is a further barrier to those with brains.

The continual regurgitation of the 'thank you for your service brigade' since 9/11 is nauseating and has further eroded any form of free-thought. Almost as disturing as the rise in scripture reciting half-wits on all platforms of social media.

I wouldn't bring my kids up there if it was the last bloody place on earth. It's a f*cking mess of a country.

Nothing to do with omnipotence - the Republican party has backed Trump through every single odious transgression great and small, of which there are too many to count. People keep waiting for this point where it's just too much to take and there will be some kind of revolt against him among the party.

    THIS POINT DOES NOT EXIST.

The most that will happen would be that a few conscientious objectors might leave the party, as has happened before, but all this has amounted to has been a slow purge of the party. Who is left who is still in the Republican party, is influential within it, and who is currently, consistently and openly critical of Trump?

If you want a predictor of future actions, look at past ones. In the case of the Republican party, this tells us they will back Trump beyond every single political norm you can just about imagine. And this isn't just because they feel like it. I'm sure many would love to be shot of him, but between wanting to keep their jobs or being terrified of death threats from an army of MAGA crazies, they're not sticking their neck out.

They have not got it under control, its just that they have failed to catch as many as previously. And their ham-fisted efforts have caused the US tourist trade to tank. And its just a detail compared with the problems tariffs have caused and are causing, and Trump's determination to be at odds with and insult the rest of the world.

Yeah, nobody wants to go to America anymore. Including Tourists

    Chomsky(2017) on the Republican party

"Has there ever been an organisation in human history that is dedicated, with such commitment, to the destruction of organised human life on Earth?"

I think it’s inaccurate to deem this 49.8 % as out and out MAGAers. Would there not have a % of them floating voters voters at the time . Eg they ‘ weighed up’ the options presented to them at the time re what Trump was offering, what Harris was offering; some not happy with a woman president, the democrats late arrival with Harris and she not having enough time to ‘make her case’ , etc, etc, And in the end they ‘ reluctantly’ voted for Trump after a lot of ‘hedge scratching’ Probably a lot of this floating voters at the did not think TOO DEEPLY about the consequences of Trumps utterances during his canvassing eg he said that he would be a Dictator for ONLY ONEDAY - also maybe they had a very different idea as to what Trump ment when he said that he would ‘drain the swamp’, . Did they realise that he was going to close down departments, sack so many people- especially from provision of critical services, etc.

IMO a sufficient % of this 49.8% of this ‘MAGA’ voter would be floaters And would float back towards the DEMO side if any kind of a reasonable candidate was put forward
