The more expensive games and memory cards are the two bug bears for me. Feels like the Vita all over again with the pathetic storage on their proprietary cards.

The other thing that's a bit worrying is that it's a rather safe second console. There's not doing anything to shake up the market.

I bought a game on Gamivo last month and today I was on my online banking and seen I was charged €4.99, I was like what the hell I don't remember buying anything. Turns out when I bought the game code I was automatically enlisted in a subscription. The bastards.

You picked the lower priced (SMART price) option on the add to cart page.

Right. I was rushing and must not have read everything correctly.

I think this is an unfortunate result of the switch's success. Look at the Wii. Incredibly successful, and followed up with the Wii U which was a financial disaster.

Once it became obvious how well the switch had done, it wasn't any surprise they would go for crystal clear upgrade to keep that install base. It won't sell as well as the OG switch, but it's a solid bet

Just did the first mission in AC7 and yes, used advanced controls.

    Not feeling it… yet

I'm going to be lazy and just post a HUKD link since that's where I saw this

A number of digital gaming encyclopedias for free on itch.io. Looks like you just need an account.

While the ones listed are free, others on the uploader's page are free but accepting donations. Haven't gone through them all to see what's available but look to be cool downloads for a tablet.

Played a little bit of First Beserker Khazan, beat the first boss after a few tries. Seems decent so far. First boss anyway felt pretty fair in that there aren't huge hesitations in hits and then quick swings (like Lies of P), but a decent cadence and speed in the attacks. Not a huge fan of what feels like an over-reliance on the charged heavy attack, but maybe different weapons or abilities will help negate that. Like the art style too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6 SKAINER

The art style is really good, especially those gloomy locations. How did you deal with the first boss - through dodges or blocks? It seemed to me that it required almost perfect timing.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,104 ✭✭✭Unearthly

I have just one more boss left. Love the game. Now that I’m at the stage where I’ve unlocked a significant amount of skills I’m putting together some crazy combinations. I’ve also modified my gear sets to get maximum health, stamina and damage.

For those playing with Spear, unlock all ‘trance’ skills when you can and use the Golden Set. Once you then learn how to reflect (unlock all the skills for this) and the games version of Mikiri counter you will take down most bosses easily. Thank me later

Also try and make an effort to collect everything and do the side missions. This will help improve your damage stats, and health recovery. There is a sneaky option in Khazan memories that you need to press square and you can improve your damage stats by a significant amount after each mission

Bit of both, mostly blocking (well, parrying as much as possible to not lose stamina), then dodging the bigger hits. It does require good timing, but I felt the window was pretty fair and attacks were reasonably well telegraphed. Hardest part was just finding the right timing to do the charged attack to break the enemy's stagger meter quickly. Maybe that wasn't as necessary as I thought, not fully sure if the enemy stagger meter builds back up if you haven't broken it quick enough or done enough damage, so maybe normal attacks would still be worth it.

Having made some progress in Blue Prince now, I can tell you that it's a masterclass in how to do slow reveals of puzzle solutions.

From the very first room, you can tell that there's loads of things in each room that you have no idea about, but it's only when you get into it that you start to get the clue to solve the larger puzzles.

Also, the billiard room puzzle can get fucked. The first time you solve it you get a sense of satisfaction, the second time you're looking forward to it because it's so easy, and then by the twentieth time you're the scratching your head on it again, back at the start.

I didn't mind the parlour boxes, like some boolean algebra.

The billiards rules of precedence never really felt coherent to me, I couldn't really grok it naturally and I hate that later on it gets so weird with the bullseye and you're bruteforcing things.

Once I copped the rule of precedence - which a book I found told me 😀 - it was never an issue. Got the trophy room trophy for 40 of them and think I tried to brute force it one of those times, but ended up just solving it naturally.

Some added complexity for sure when the extra symbols are introduced, but the basics stayed coherent for me throughout.

It’s been so long now since I faced the first boss but some bosses stamina restores very fast while others can be chipped away over time. I rarely use charged attacks now. Once you unlock skills that will be your bread and butter. The game wants you to be aggressive and less defensive but I think at the start you don’t have much options

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,590 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah I just beat Black Phantom after the three trial things, and I spoke too soon about weird hesitations in attacks. Wasn't too bad, but he definitely caught me out a few times.

But yeah, his stamina regenerated like mad so had to keep the pressure on. Decided to go dual wield so threw a bunch of skill points into it and got some decent flurry-type attacks which helped.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,590 ✭✭✭✭Penn

At least after you've solved 40 of them, they stop having as many different calculations to complete, usually just 3 boards rather than 5 or 6.

I had a moment where I thought something was buggy, and then it turned out it was just the rules being tricky. But yeah, with the book, everything fell into place. Speaking of unusual perspectives, I came across this article about games where you play as the monster – super interesting take: sacralium Made me rethink how some games are designed!

Playing Mascot Promise Agency, which I’d describe as a loving tribute to Japanese 7/10 games (and a few more prestigious ones too). Overwhelming Yakuza, Suda and Swery vibes, with several hints of Persona too. And feels like just what I need for a fun, chill game.

To be clear, the game is basically an open world collectathon and chore game, where you drive around finding a bunch of items and upgrades while doing side quests. It reminds me a lot of No More Heroes and Deadly Premonition, but a lot more polished and frictionless. On top of that is a management game- akin to the Yakuza ones - where you’re managing a mascot agency (it should be noted in this world mascots are actually living creatures). Basically you need to make all the numbers go up. No combat or anything - just things to collect and money to spend.

And it’s just a really chill, low effort time in a way that feels oddly soothing. Three hours disappeared playing it last night. It helps that the world, art, writing and characters are all charming and deranged - not quite as deranged as Paradise Killer (the studio’s first game), but very demented nonetheless. Good mix of humour and heart in the writing. Great Japanese language performances throughout too.

Set expectations accordingly - if you’re looking for something with lots of mechanical depth, you won’t find it here. But if you want a silly, amusing good time where you’re constantly progressing through checklists while lovely lo-fi beats blare in the background and you do jobs for oddball characters, this is a lot more endearing and playful than the modern AAA games that offer the same loop.

Just back from the PlayStation Concert in Dubland. Have to say, I quite enjoyed it. I didn't read about it beforehand, only that it was the PS games music live. I did kinda expect a full orchestra and choir, and the near €100 price tag kinda justified that thought, but its 15 artists, and some backing tracks in some places, and still sounded very good. Full would have been better though!

Soundwise, we were in Block E and while it did sound amazing for the most part, it was a bit bass heavy so some sounds were drowned out. Didn't detract from it though, still amazing. They played a few songs covering Horizon, Bloodborne, Helldivers, Journey, Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us, God of War, Astrobot and Spiderman. You'd really want to know your soundtracks to fully appreciate it, I was kinda lost on TLOU ones except for the main theme. But all played really well, only 1 little non intrusive mistake the whole night (about 2 hours played in total), so really well done. 3 strings, 3 brass, 2 percussion, 1 synthesiser, guitarist, bass and 2 singers.

Lighting was mostly excellent. Simple but effective use of lighting, smoke and projection. There were also 5 see through screens that kept going up and down in front of the stage with additional projections, all depicting gameplay scenes/moving stills for each game. But I was often blinded, the side strip lights were very bright and often straight into my eyes. Everyone got the same. But didn't happen too often, and didn't detract from the overall experience. I recommend getting a seat as middle as possible. We were off to the side so some of the projections were off.

Was a bit pricey, and factor in the €30 in parking (we went early, €4.50/hr parking x 2 + €22 event parking), the €21 in tolls (3 tolls twice), the €50 in fuel, and the €100 ticket, it was an expensive enough day. We did eat in a place called Ruby's across from the arena, and that was amazing, and cheap for Dubland (€24 for a half rack ribs, 3 medium wings, pulled pork burger, chips, dip - highly recommended). Plus the traffic was unusually quiet, no traffic jams, always moving at max allowed limit. It was weird and completely unexpected.

The event itself was great, but the overall day and cost involved did take away from it. If it was on in Cork, or you live in/near Dubland, I'd recommend it. And that's my socialising done for another year!

I do love a good videogames music concert. This one just didn't interest me though, although I'm not the target market. I think too many modern soundtracks follow the latest Hollywood craze of the music not standing out and interrupting the action and just being a bit insipid. Not like older movies music like John Williams where you'd come out of a movie or from playing a game humming the music. That's also not to say there weren't some great games with great soundtracks at it, I guess a lot of the games I don't have much attachment to or would listen to the music outside of playing the games.

Would love a few more to come to Ireland. Eimear Noone has been great about bring some to Ireland.

I was scope out national concert hall for movie and gaming ones. Cheapnas chips compared to what Monke is saying there and it tends to be a full orchestra.

Defo less flashy though and rarely has screens so tends to be just music, last one did some command and conquer if I remember correctly.

Next up for me is The Lords of the Fallen (2023). Apparently the devs have done a very good job with the latest patches and addressed the criticisms of early feedback.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,585 ✭✭✭McFly85

Tempted by Khazan: The First Berserker. Had heard nothing about it but it seems to be a pretty well received soulslike focused on hand to hand combat.

But Lords of the fallen is tempting me too, version 2.0 looks to have done wonders for it.

But then Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is out in a couple of days and that’s a been on my radar for a while! Decisions, decisions…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,104 ✭✭✭Unearthly

I think you’d like First Berserkers combat. Think there is a decent size demo of it. You can continue your game from the end of the demo to

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,261 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I'm going to wait a while on Clair Obscura because I've yet to be impressed by any western take on a JRPG other than undertale. They usually review well and then later you find out the writing is tropey and the combat can't sustain itself for the length the game is. Im also very wary about QTEs in combat. As legend of Dragoon proved it's not enough to sustain a good battle system and it only worked on Mario RPG because it's about 8 hours long. It needs to feed into another system like the Shadow Hearts games use it.

I would usually wait but it’s on Game Pass day 1 so will get stuck in if the reviews are good. And it’s supposedly quite short as RPGs go(30ish hours) so hopefully the battle system has enough depth to not outstay its welcome by then.

Anyway I started the Khazan demo, up to the first boss. Classic soulslike with great combat, will definitely continue with it.
