No. I struggled all the way through it. It's an amazing accomplishment, very well done, but I wasn't having fun. I wanted a game, and what I got was a "Western Life Simulator".

Stuff like your horse not able to hear you while being too far away, yes, it's very realistic, but it's not fun. There's a reason that every single other game with a horse in it has you whistle and your horse arrives.

I get that they want you to slow down and enjoy the things that they're showing you, but I found that the things that they wanted to show me was pretty boring.

Agree completely with it feeling more like a simulator than a game, felt like the game was completely zapped of any fun and rhythm.

A real shame in my eyes, hopefully GTA 6 doesn't go down the same road.

I think it's one of the worst games made by a triple A studio in years. They were so obsessed with adding detail to the world and making it realistic that they forgot to make it any fun to play. Even just moving in the game can sometimes feel like you are playing QWOP. It was it stark contrast to Breath of the Wild which has a world and systems that interplayed with the purpose of giving the player loads of options to play with. The lack of respect it has for the players time is infuriating.

The story is really poor as well. I can get why some people might think it's a brilliant western epic but I know my western films and it's just a pastiche of tropes and set pieces from much better movies.

I'm expecting some Bioshock Infinite style retrospectives on the game when it's no longer such a technical marvel.

My issue with RDR2 is that they created an incredible world with amazing detail, and some of the stuff I've seen about hidden things you can find by exploring or finding notes and doing the right thing at the right time is insane.

But it's just not fun to play, and the game's realism and detail work against you in so many ways to make a lot of the game labourious.

Plus still no 60fps mode... its why I've only played it the 1 time. Rockstar have fallen far from the top imo. I've little excitement for GTA6 as a result.

Give me a new Bully game but with the gameplay systems of something like breath of the wild where you can use the in game physics and game systems to cause all sorts of trouble.

Oh, the thread has turned into another conversation about how sh***y RDR2 is?

Has some nice wagons all the same.

    It sure does.

I went out on a wagon with somebody from Oklahoma in Red Dead Online. It was fcuking epic!

    Oregon Trail

Bit obscure here but everybody that grew up in the 80s/early 90s in America played it on the school computer.

Its heartening to see people call RDR2 boring, laborious and generally not much fun. I have found my people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 111 ✭✭Mattyonthepatty

I'm gonna push my luck here but I genuinely think Bully Manhunt and GTA3 are the best games Rockstar ever made.

Nice to see I am not the only one who found RDR2 a bit of a disaster, the long wait from the brilliant original made the disappointment of the second game even tougher to swallow.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,261 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I actually kind of hate manhunt. Just a really basic stealth game trying to be shocking.

The warriors, now that was a good rockstar game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 111 ✭✭Mattyonthepatty

There is certainly a case of rose tinted glass memories of after school with friends regarding manhunt, I don't think it would stand up to well if I was to replay it in 2025 either I must concede.

Damn I forgot The warrior's game what a great shout, that was a real joy to play, doesn't get the credit other Rockstar installments get either, when it really should.

I could write a thesis on how much I was disappointed with L. A Noire but I have muddied Rockstars name enough for one day. 😁

Let's pray they get GTA6 right but I have my concerns.

Have started Blue Prince, and it's already great. I've done nothing, no idea what I'm doing, but so far, yes, this is very much my thing.

Also, the music so far is top notch, very atmospheric, reminds me Obra Dinn in how perfectly suited it is.

    I enjoyed RDR 2.

As did most people, you are in the majority, it's me unfortunately that is the cranky contrarion.

I wanted to enjoy RDR2 and appreciated from a technical point of view that it created a world that blew everything else away but I found it boring. Gave up after 15 hours

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30 Higgo84

Funny you should mention Bully. I actually just picked it up recently on sale for the Xbox on backwards compatibility. I haven't started it yet but plan to do so soon.

Anyone playing the Thronglets game that ties in with the new Netflix Black Mirror episode? It's not bad, essentially a work builder but got more a clicker mentality to it. What makes it stand out is all at fourth wall breaking self referential moments it throws in.

It's not amazing but a fun little game that should tie in nicely with the episode. It's a little bit too on the nose and wink wink nudge nudge with the fourth wall breaking stuff.

I've been keeping quiet because I know the Switch consoles are not aimed at someone like me, but I was hoping there'd be something to tempt me over. Boy was I wrong. Nintendo have jumped to the top of the dick list with this.

    • €60 cheaper than a PS5/XSX but performs like a PS4/Xbone
    • €90 physical games, some of which are just download codes
    • 256Gb internal memory, will be full quick depending on the games used (another €60 to double it)
    • €10 for a demo… christ
    • €90 "Pro" controller, a must if you value your hand health, but still doesn't use Hall effect sensors
    • €60 camera required for chat
    • A Cash button that will eventually require a subscription service to use (first for a console? Buttons locked behind a sub service?)
    • €10 upgrade to Switch 1 games or €79.99 for 8 year old game (BOTW)
    • 3rd party ports that perform and look worse (understandably, but still)
    • Basically confirmation that the games and console will probably never drop in price because Nintendo quality…
    • And I'm not sure it's 100% confirmed, but the Gamecube controller may only work with classic Gamecube games…

They did not sell it to me, and if Sony did this they'd be enemy number 1, but Nintendo fanboys are quite rabid and defending all these price increases. And charging for a demo… Never thought I'd see the day Nintendo made Sony look good. It's like they have cornered their market and going full in on scamming as much money as possible for as long as possible.

They've definitely priced me out of it, mainly out of principle but still crazy money. If I wanted to get a Switch 2 to play BOTW (so Pro controller basically required, slightly bigger Joycons won't improve how horrible they feel), from Smyths, it'll cost me €639.97. That's crazy money for what you get. Crazy. It's €40 shy of the 1Tb OLED Steam Deck, €70 more than the 512Gb OLED Deck. It's like they don't want new fans and are about to milk their current playerbase. Just as comparison, Digital PS5 Astrobot edition is currently €400, with a disc drive €500. And both come with the Astrobot demo game included also.

Not only that, but MS/Sony are going to see these €90 last gen games and up their prices accordingly, no doubt. Rockstar will feel completely justified charging €100 for GTA VI now. And it won't go back down. So yeah, thanks Nintendo. Was gonna post this is the Switch 2 thread but didn't want to derail it. Again, clarifying that I know I'm not the target audience, but it's like they don't want any new audience. I was a fence sitter, now I'm on the opposite side of the fence. Nothing tempting me. Nothing. /rant

I have plenty of qualms with Nintendo’s pricing of the new console (not least the physical game prices - the MK one is undeniably mental), but I intend to get the Switch 2 / Mario Kart bundle (510) and a case (30) and won’t feel any urgency whatsoever to be spending more than that on hardware in the immediate future. Already have a Pro Controller which is backwards compatible. An SD card will easily until down the line - should be plenty internal storage on there for plenty of first party titles. For anyone upgrading from Switch 1 it’s not going to be mad expensive unless they really, really want a ‘c’ button on their pro controller

It’s expensive and on the higher end of expectations, but not crazily so given current hardware prices across the board. And I expect a new handheld console to be a gen behind what dedicated home machines can muster - the hardware demands and specs are fundamentally different. At least this is a big leap forward on the home console side too - docked first party games should look and play great on modern TVs going by what we’ve seen. Third party titles will inevitably be more of a mixed bag.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,591 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I'd also add that a comparion with the Steamdeck isn't really 1:1 because with the Steamdeck you'd also have to buy a dock to play it on a TV, you'd still have to buy a separate controller if you were doing so, games still won't look or perform as good as PS5/XBSX (and not all modern PC games can be played properly on Steamdeck), and new game prices will be increasing across the board, not just Nintendo.

I bought a Switch a year or two ago as well as a Pro controller, played Mario Odyssey and Zelda BOTW, and after a while, just traded it all in because I wasn't playing it. Chances are in 5-6 years, I'll pick up a Switch 2, play whatever games I missed out on, and probably trade it in after a while. Either that or learn how to emulate Nintendo games which is illegal and something you should never do so I don't even know why you're suggesting it I would never do something like that…

Either way, Nintendo don't need to try and appeal to new players. The Switch is one of the biggest selling consoles of all time, and what they're delivering is a newer, better upgrade to that. If the Switch didn't appeal to someone, the Switch 2 was never going to either. They had to make a new one because the original is getting left behind in terms of capabilities, so the Switch 2 is seemingly a lot more capable and beefed up, but ultimately it's the same as most other console iterations; a more powerful version of the last one.

    €60 cheaper than a PS5/XSX but performs like a PS4/Xbone

    - it's handheld hybrid which accounts for a lot and should have exclusives unlike the other 2.

€90 physical games, some of which are just download codes

    • Fair enough but this seems to be an option for third parties, Nintendo games will have the game data on the cart. But this isn't new, the vast majority of PS5 and Xbox game will not run or run badly when run from the disc without day 1 patches. Nintendo just aren't pretending we aren't in the dystopian all digital future.

256Gb internal memory, will be full quick depending on the games used (another €60 to double it)

    • This isn't great and considering I've over 512GB of games on my switch 1 then I won't fit them all on the console. However, most annoyingly is that the new micro express format seems to only have 256GB and 512GB cards, both useless to me considering the amount of games I will probably buy for the switch 2. There is a 1GB card from one manufacturer but it's a mythical unicorn that can't be found for love or money.

    • €10 for a demo… christ

    Easy solution. Don't buy it.

    • €90 "Pro" controller, a must if you value your hand health, but still doesn't use Hall effect sensors

Easy solution. Don't buy it. Honestly the joycon controls aren't that bad and you can get the excellent switch 1 pero controller cord cheaper if you don't need a C button.

As for no Hall Effect, I've actually found out a lot of the best analogue sticks didn't have hall effect. The issue is Sony and Nintendo using **** parts. Hall Effect sensors will only help in cases were you are using crappy parts but previously Nintendo, Sony and MS didn't have hall effect sensors because they made their joysticks from good quality parts.

If the pro controller is like the WiiU and switch 1 pro controller then it should be one of the best on the market, hall effect or not (both of those didn't have hall effect sensors but just have great quality parts).

    • €60 camera required for chat

    Easy solution. Don't buy it.

    • A Cash button that will eventually require a subscription service to use (first for a console? Buttons locked behind a sub service?)

The subscription is needed to play games online anyway and is far and away the cheapest offered by the big three and does give you a lot of benefits with old games and other things. Again, don't pay for it.

As a PC gamer pay a subscription is ridiculous on a console but you probably aren't getting these features on the other two consoles anyway.

    • €10 upgrade to Switch 1 games or €79.99 for 8 year old game (BOTW)

Botw is a bit much but it's also free if you pay the online subscription. Other games like Kirby seem to be substantial expansion packs that look worth the extra tenner.

    • 3rd party ports that perform and look worse (understandably, but still)

No evidence for this yet and you don't buy a switch to play third party big games. It's for Nintendo exclusives and Indies. So moot point .

    • Basically confirmation that the games and console will probably never drop in price because Nintendo quality…

You did see that PS5 console price hike? It's now more expensive than at launch. Thanks Sony for making us supplement USA.

The days of console prices dropping seem to be a thing of the past and there's some decent 33% off sales online for Nintendo stuff every so often.

    • And I'm not sure it's 100% confirmed, but the Gamecube controller may only work with classic Gamecube games…

Again, don't buy it. If you hate the Xbox controller because you are so used to the PS2 dual shock you are going to have the GameCube controller. The only thing it will give is analogue triggers to some games. Everything will play grand on modern controls.

Saying something like don't buy it defeats the point I was trying to make. All that together doesn't exactly entice new customers imo. But again, I admit it's not for me anyway. Each to their own.
