I'm very tempted to bite the bullet on the Weber in Woodies, I've had a Weber kettle (basic) that has served me well the last 8/9 years, but it's starting to show it's age now. I understand this is gas (and I actually loved using charcoal) but i think the speed and efficiency will win me over

(Could maybe even try playing Woodies and my local garden centre off with each other and see if I can grab a bit of an extra bargain. Maybe a bottle of gas thrown in lol)

Will likely call into Woodies first to assess how it is size wise, as I'm limited enough with "real estate" kids bikes and gardening gear in the shed, and sports equipment and other clobber in the lean-to.

Could this realistically be stored outside year round if I invest in a decent enough cover for it?

I've had the smaller version stored outside for 4 years and it's held up completely fine. Didn't bother with the weber cover, just got something on Amazon.

Family of five here, have that 3 burner Weber for 6 years and it's still going strong. Gets plenty of use and is left outside all year with an Amazon cover and no sign of any rust at all.

It's a great price to get it at.

Anyone buying Weber gas BBQ make sure that the grill area is cast iron vs some lightweight material that will rust to dust in 2 years.
I haven’t purchased a Weber in about 10 years but even updated 2 and 3 burners I’ve looked at in shops over last couple of years often have the lightweight ceramic grills -these are absolute sh01te so beware - cast iron will be heavy so you’ll know instantly - walk if they’re ceramic lightweight- you’ll have to spend good money replacing them

From the specs.... The porcelain-enamelled cast iron cooking grates retain even heat for the best tasting food.

I'm confused now lol, do the ones Woodies are currently selling have the decent cast iron ones or the crap ones?

By the way, I went to my local Woodies to check these out, look nice alright, but my local Woodies have the full price stuck on these, not the discounted price. Unsure if this offer is for online only, but I would be fierce pissed off if I bought one of the showroom floor at full price and later found out they are half that price on the website.

The “bad” ones are non stick coated and very light - they’re thin metal - they have a ceramic coating - the “good” ones are heavy - they’re cast iron and duller in look - knowing the above information you won’t mistake one for the other

Must take a second look at the one in my woodies this evening so.

I know 350 isn't exactly cheap, but I'm looking at it as more of an investment than anything else, plus running on gas, I would prob be more incentivised to use it even when it's not exactly "BBQ weather" for some cuts of meat for dinners etc.

    Thanks Oscar

Great bargain and investment. I picked up the E-310 today as an upgrade to the E-210 that I got in 2010! Plenty of stock in Woodies.

LBF21’s post above has the correct cast iron grills.

I BBQ all year round in all weathers - it’s brilliant for doing things like spatchcock chickens or indeed roasts no less all the other regular BBQ items.

You can absolutely leave it out all year around - funnily enough, the “cart” version ie 2 wheels vs 4 on the newer version, looks sturdier to me and possibly easier to manoeuvre around - as long as the carcass doesn’t get dented it will last well over 10 years - once dented it will rust in that area - and the main reason for dents is falling over- and that happens when a strong wind picks up on an ill fitting cover (too big) and makes a sail out of it 😀

If I was buying one today unless I had a snug fit cover I wouldn’t cover it for that very reason

I have this cover for my E210 purchased last year, prior to that I had a Q200 with a cover and it lasted years, in fact the stand rotted through where it touched the ground with the BBQ near perfect - it made a fan of Weber and why I got the E210 (price also helped!).

Why spend so much on a BBQ and then leave it to the elements, this make fitted my E210 perfectly and stayed on through the recent winds -it's great quality, thick material etc.

Much better value than the Weber cover.

A lot of woodies stores sold out now of this offer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 286 ✭✭DXR

Was great craic putting it together.

Jeez, I'm a seasoned DIYer, but still took me the guts of 5 hours, started last night, then went at it this am again.

Already registered on the Weber site, so should be good for years. Thanks all for the help, tips, and advice.

Pensioners get 10% off that special price too, on Thursdays, or what ever day they have a special on.

Only seen this this evening, I ordered this one already, and should be here tomorrow, might make an "anchor point" somewhere for it to tie down with bungie cords to prevent it blowing over, will see how it goes.

What size car did people manage to fit the box into?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 286 ✭✭DXR

I have a 7 seater Kodiaq, got it home with 3rd row of seats down (mine are almost permanent down anyway) but couldn't get the boot closed, not a problem to me as I'm a few km from Woodies, so just drove home slowly down a rural road, but if I was to do it again I'd definitely go over in my van.

    It's a big box.

Lads had my first cook this morning with E310 Spirit II and there is constant misfiring on the first burner.

It happened before any food put on so the tubes cant be full of grease i.e. its brand new

Below video is the the same as what I am experiencing but no clear cut answers online to a definetive solution

Without looking at the video as don’t have time right now but small blockage such as dirt/ “a thing” in the gas pipes themselves?
Usually with Weber the “gas” stuff just “works” - don’t fiddle too much but if you can confirm no blockage then considering it’s gas, just return for repair / full refund - don’t place yourself at risk

Because I'm a bloody perfectionist and redid some sections a few times and as I doubted myself on a few occasions. (Rightly at least once)

a couple of hours last night between 2000-2150 then got stuck back into it this morning for a few hours again, but I'm including coffee breaks in this, and tidying up and clearing up/putting away the old packaging. My God that was a job in itself lol.

Non stop work? A good solid 3 hrs I would say at least.

If I was to go at it again, I would say 1.5 hrs on the next one though.

Hi, I'm tempted to get one of these BBQs.

Do they use propane or kosangas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,616 ✭✭✭wassie

Your question is not quite right, but I think I get the intent of what your asking. Kasongas is a Nordic supplier of LPG and its Irish operations merged with Calor over 50 years ago.

As to what type of gas the Weber being discussed uses - the answer is it depends.

Basically there are 3 types of gases available propane (typically red cylinders) and butane (typically yellow cylinders) - these are both derived from LPG. The third is biogas which is extracted from gases produced by the breakdown of organic materials.

Typically all of these will be suitable for an outdoor BBQ.

To answer your question (if Im right) - what determines what gas you need straight of the box will be the regulator.

I think nearly all weber BBQs come with a 27mm clip-on propane regulator to connect to patiogas bottles. Patiogas is basically propane and comes in a grey cylinder.

But if you want to use a different type of gas, you simply need a different regulator connected to the hose that matches your gas & cylinder type.

The "better" choice in terms of energy depends on whether you are concerned about weight or the size of the fuel container. For most common applications like BBQs and patio heaters where volume is the primary consideration for cylinder size, the difference in energy density isn't significant enough to be a major deciding factor compared to other properties like boiling point and performance in different temperatures.

So whats the difference between the two:

    • Propane: Higher energy density by weight.
    • Butane: Higher energy density by volume.

Personally I prefer Propane as I can get it in a bigger bottle (I only cook in one place) and it works in very cold temperatures so I can cook occasionally on a dry winters day. Butane pressure falls away as you approach zero. If your never going to cook in these temps then this is a non-issue.

The only other reason I can see why you wouldnt use patio gas is if you are already using butane or propane for other purposes at home and dont want additional cylinders.

This post may turn out to be contentious, but I cooked on mine this evening for the first time, did a whole chicken (which cooked perfectly I might add) , burgers and sausages.

To be fair, the ease of cooking on it compared to my old charcoal kettle was comparing night/day, did the chicken on indirect heat for 1.15 hrs let it rest for about 20 mins and it was delicious.

However, and this is where the possible contention may lie, I think I preferred the taste of the charcoal, I'm going to withhold my judgement though until I get other cuts of meat, but not getting that charcoal char is definitely something I might miss

Yes have the kettle aswell and charcoal is superior overall but I quite like the taste from the gas but can depend on the cut of meat also.

I don't particularly care for lamb or venison on charcoal.

On another side note Tesco had 3kg Turkeys down from 28 to 7 yesterday might be worth a trip for anybody interested
