I've got an amazon fire tv, wont install the app! Tablet is always an option but can't beat the tv.

Premier Sports must be have got the English language rights for Ireland & will launch them on their rumoured/delayed dedicated rugby channel.

One for the pedants: "TG4 will be the exclusive free to aire broadcaster" 😲

Presumably RTE will now concentrate on 6Ns rugby for men and women and (hopefully) show a bit more AIL. Slim pickings for Against the Head next season.

I remember Sky News celebrating they won 'News Channel of the Year'...at the Sky awards

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,923 ✭✭✭arsebiscuits1

Agreed. 50 odd quid for the year.

And to be fair I rarely have to use it these days as the replays are free with it and most games I want to watch are FTA.

The only times I need to use it is if I'm travelling or want English or non Hugh Cahill commentary.

    Still worth the money

Nobody is, that’s how I read it anyway.

Yeah it’s basically TG4’s existing deal renewed - but this time there won’t be games on RTE too. One game each week plus eight additional games, plus picks from the play offs and the final every second year.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,346 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Premier Sports renewal of rights now confirmed with the new package and the exiting of RTE from coverage meaning they’ll have more exclusive coverage of the Irish provinces including six interpros exclusively.

    https://www.unitedrugby.com/latest/news/premier-sports-expands-coverage-of-the-bkt-united-rugby-championship

It also sounds like there’ll be significantly reduced UK FTA coverage too, reading between the lines, I think similarly to Ireland only S4C will probably see their deal renewed.

Wasn't TG4 the first home broadcaster of the original Celtic League, while some will complain about it being broadcast in Irish they usually have some brief pitch side analysis in English and interviews with the coaches in English.

For the fans that can follow rugby it probably doesn't matter too much but broadcasting it in Irish probably won't help grow the interest in rugby

It could help grow the interest in Irish.

Yes and that probably explains why TG4 is so interested in carrying the games but you'd wonder about those responsible for the game and not looking to have it on English speaking terrestrial TV

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭PMC83

It's going to reduce viewership in a massive way. I know a good few casual fans who would sit down and watch a game on RTE / Premier but wouldn't bother with TG4 as they want to understand the commentary. The hardcore fans will live with it, but I'd imagine those with a passing interest will not.

I've never had an issue watching on TG4, but I prob wouldn't be delighted if it was a knock out game at the end of the season

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,883 ✭✭✭✭Pudsy33

It's still on premier though isn't it? It's just the odd free to air game on rte that's being lost.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,593 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

It’s half of the free to air games.

We’ve been spoiled up to now but this is a big loss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,107 ✭✭✭Digifriendly

Half of Irish provinces' matches that were FTA will be lost to subscription only and those remaining FTA will have Irish language only commentary. This is a big step backwards.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,346 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

To look at the impact, let’s look at that Round 15 fixture list I posted earlier.

So in Round 15, those with access to Irish free to air stations only (Saorview or players) can watch three of eight fixtures.

Those with access to both UK and Irish free to air (Freesat or Manual Tuning feature on Sky) can watch five of eight fixtures

    Next season.

Those with only Irish channels would get only one game live. It might not even be TG4’s pick Leinster v Ulster because of Premier Sports enhanced exclusivity over interpros. More likely it might be the Munster v Bulls game.

We don’t yet know if there will even be a UK FTA broadcaster. Mostly like if there is one it would be S4C and it would have one of the two Welsh interpros.

So a reduction from 3-5 FTA games to 1-2.

There will be some weeks of course TG4 will have more than one game in any particular game week. That won’t be every week however - they have 26 games in the regular season of 18 weeks, so less than half of all weeks with more than one game.

It's interesting that despite Zebre having a "good" season they're still in their usual second from bottom position.

Benneton absolutely caving the Lions up! Some lovely stuff so far

I see Menonchello is at 13 with Brex inside. Formidable pairing.

Benetton have scored some beautiful tries. Backline is excellent.

Rumoured that brex and menoncello are off to France next season. Pity as they have built a good squad again

I think their coach Bartolami is stepping down at the end of season as well

That no arms nonsense really needs to be stamped out totally. Yc automatically.

Benetton determined to chuck this away

Is URC TV continuing? I’d be pretty surprised if Premier wanted that. It seems to me like they’re putting their chips all on a Rugby Channel and are looking to become the destination for supporters here.

Tbf the FTA coverage has been a bit of a luxury. You really weren’t missing out on many games if you supported Leinster or Munster in a full season.

I’d say Premier will leave their TNT carriage deal. Would be great if they went to Sky but direct to consumer would make sense for them. I’d say they’d be eyeing 100k subs here along with pubs which would really expand their overall business.

Stormers killing the Connacht scrum. Stormers have the bonus point try after 30 minutes but its far from over.

It's a real Sacha show. Can't tell if he's unplayably good or Connacht just not defending. Stormers not interested in defence either, in fairness.
