Interesting. Who do you suggest should remove the duly elected president from Office and if they are successful in their attempted coup and charged with treason what will we do to help them! who should replace Trump and Vance as leaders of the US.

There are perfectly proper ways of removing a president, and maybe Vance could be removed as well, legally. However, the consequences are terrifying. Trump may be the better solution. Anyone further down the line than VP however is only acting as President, though what this means in practical terms I do not know.

One of the reasons Trump won is the same reason why televangelists can become millionaires in America - there is a large portion of the American public that are gullible morons who are very easily swayed by people they consider to be powerful and charismatic.

I saw a comment which said AOC and Harris have annoying voices. Even if that is the case (I don't think so personally), it really shouldn't matter. They are running for the job of running the country, not to be a contender on America's Got Talent. But the problem is that so many American swing voters are incredibly superficial and naive that they'd vote for someone doing a clown show over actual competent, yet comparatively boring, people.

Trump administration is suing the State of Maine for its position on trans people participating in sports.

Remember when Conservatives said things policy decisions should be left to the states to come up with their own policies.

Not sure why Pam Bondi was making the announcement or why it's the justice dept initiating the suit.

Maine's Governor is the one who snapped back at Trump at a White House event when he commented about this.

Take a look at Howard Dean in 2004; The "Dean Scream" was a joke of a thing to focus on but it got widespread press. I don't think it caused his failure in the end but it showed how/what the electorate can be fed as 'important'.

BREAKING: Judge finds flying migrants to El Salvador after orders not to "demonstrate a willful disregard for its Order, sufficient for the Court to conclude that probable cause exists to find the Government in criminal contempt."

In Dublin for a medical thing and started chatting to the guy in front of me for the hotel. Canadian and joked that he must be grateful not to be an American. Response was that him and his family originally intended to go to the US on holiday but abandoned those plans in the wake of Trump.

It's up to the justice department to follow through, so it will amount to diddly squat. If they did, yes Trump can pardon the individual.

If it was civil contempt, Trump can't pardon and that's assuming the US marshals carry out the judges orders (it's all controlled by the justice department) A judge can also deputize someone, if they really wanted to bypass the marshals and justice department.

It will probably amount to nothing regardless.

The two party system lends itself to this nuttiness. If they had multi-party coalitions like most countries, Trump would be somewhat more of a peripheral figure in US politics (sort of like their Nigel Farage) and very unlikely ever to be President.

"Checks and balances" in the U.S. seems kinda like letting your kid set their own bedtime and assuming they'll be sensible about it.

Impeach and remove Trump - Vance elevated. Vance chooses VP (some MagaNazi)

Impeach and remove Vance - MagaNazi is POTUS.

Nothing short of violence will remove both Trump and Vance at the same time and elevate the Speaker. So, removing Trump is fine, we won't get to impeach Vance before he's got a VP and Congress+Senate will not rush.

This is why Dems keep losing. They keep allowing what is a minority interest to continue to push an idea that is broadly unpopular in the US. Pew research has it at two thirds of Americans oppose trans females competing in female sport.

This stuff has been going on long enough that if a sea change in acceptance was coming, it would have come. Instead attitudes appear to be hardening.

The Dems need to take this issue out of politics not keep feeding it.

A two party system is effectively coalition government only the coalitions are permanent. Only in a two party system could the likes of Hilary Clinton and AOC be in the same party.

Assuming you had a majority in both houses to impeach and convict Trump, they would be mad to confirm Vance's pick for VP and then after decide to impeach Vance. The president can choose a replacement VP, but that candidate needs to be confirmed by both houses.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,633 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

A 2-for-1 impeachment? I guess it can happen - but not before a Democrat is Speaker. Talk about coups!

Not sure what the Constitution says about trying to remove several at once, i think since it applies to Federal officials you can certainly impeach both POTUS and Vice President at the same time. Lots of popcorn!

Thinking a bit more, it's Vance that'll be hard to get. CFTrump's got lots of things you can bring him up on charges about, but Vance can't make policy or anything like that. He's just an empty suit, really, who is an ignoramus and spineless.

It's still an incredibly high bar to have to clear in order to keep authoritarianism out, whatever way you slice it. It's also pretty unrealistic to expect that the incumbent party can garner the same numbers as when their candidate was the one pushing for change.

When you're running against a guy like Trump, who was openly promising some pretty disturbing things in his electoral campaign, never mind the fact that he incited a violent attack on the US Capitol, and he's still topping polls and looking set to match his previous performance, THAT is where things have gone wrong. Once that is the case, you're really just waiting for a sufficient gust of wind to make the whole rotten edifice of US democracy collapse. A person like Trump shouldn't be getting half a million votes in a healthy society, never mind 77 million.

It's mostly because their candidates are shte. Clinton was a terrible choice and Harris was an unpopular VP who was thrown in last minute.

Trans issues didn't seem to be a problem when someone popular like Biden ran.
