As some of you may have noticed, there is a bug on Vanilla which is preventing recent posts on certain threads from showing. There is no timeline for the fix, so we're going to create new threads and link to these threads from the last visible post on the old thread.

Getting my solar install today and I have removed myself from the list of people who don't want a smart meter. I was previously on it because solar panels used to be much more expensive haha!

Am I correct in saying my FIT is estimated from today until the day the smart meter gets installed and then the actual amount I export kicks in?

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 7,013 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

I'm not sure if you'll get the estimate now as with 24 hrs meters the "rollout" was completed last year.

Im not sure where DN stands, but the estimated fit is only for people who can't have a smart meter now, not ones who chose not to have it. Eg 3 phase or high MIC. Smart DN has been about for more than a year and a half

Open to correction on this though.

The previous deal was if you declined a smart meter then you don't get deemed export

Im not sure if they'll reverse it when you agree to a smart meter or if you have to wait for the meter to be changed

I also thought they stopped deemed export for D/N meters now that there's a smart option available

You can always divert to the car while waiting for confirmation

I believe there's an option to request a smart meter installation which might bump you up the list

Yes, found this form. Filled it in there so we will see what happens. One way or another the battery and car will get filled up as much as possible until the Smart Meter comes in

    https://www.esbnetworks.ie/services/manage-my-meter/about-smart-meters/smart-meter-form

My understanding was that once you remove yourself from "the list" they'll do it when they are next in your area

ESB starts to account for the export once they received the NC6 form. It took us 7 months, (the best, april to september) to finally get registered as there was an issue with the form and it went back and forth between ESB and installer.

Had to "register" for micro-generation with Board Gais.

Also, does the Grid restrict the amount of export? Before we were officialy connected to the grid we regularly produce over 40kWh per day, with a nice bell curve on the graph, but are now max out at aroud 35kWh, with flat line between midday and 4pm. 6.4kWp system

We have a smart meter installed since 2020, but never got it activated.

I'm currently with EI for my leccy. If (and when) I switch to Energia for their EV rates and FIT, do EI have to activate the meter or can Energia do with when I move?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,986 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

First off you don't need to activate the smart meter to receive the FIT. If you have a smart meter and the NC6 was received by ESB Networks then you should be receiving the FIT

In terms of moving to one of the EV specific plans, once you move to a smart plan then ESB Networks will activate your smart meter

If I'm being 100% honest, it's already activated and you can view your usage on the ESB website. They're just changing some stuff on their end about your meter code

Also, be very sure that you want to move to the EV plan before you pull the trigger. Once you go to a smart plan there's no going back

If you haven't already done so I'd recommend downloading your usage from ESB in a HDF file and uploading it to Energy Pal to see how the plans compare

    Thanks for that.

But there's no other way to access an EV-type night rate and/or a Feed In Tariff without a smart meter is there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,986 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

No you get the FIT as long as you have solar and the NC6 is filed with ESBN

The installer will do this when they commission your PV system

If you have a smart meter but aren't on a smart plan then you should still receive the FIT. A lot of suppliers were telling customers that this isn't the case but I think they got told to stop

The smart meter is actually already sending data, the term unactivated is really BS. You can create an account on the ESB networks page and view your usage, you just need your MPRN

You're correct that the EV rates are all on smart plans and by signing up to one you'll 'activate' the smart meter and thus can't go back to the dumb meter rates

I'd recommend using a site like Energy Pal to analyse your usage before you make the switch. In my case the smart EV rate was only around €20 cheaper per year than the best Day/Night plan available so I decided to stick with the flexibility of having 9 hours of night rate against 3-4 hours

It's my first full month on the Pinergy tariff here, and it's fantastic 😅. I got €130 micro gen credit for 517kwh, and the import/standing charge, etc., for the month was €80 for 850kwh. I've switched to heating the first tank of water for the mornings to the drive rate, too, so there are additional savings to be factored in on the gas bill. I DIY'd a 16 kwh battery for about €1500 so that should pay for itself in about 12-18 months too.

That's incredibly cheap. Was looking at an off the shelf 5Kw one, 1800. Did you follow a guide?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,861 ✭✭✭tnegun

Yes, this guide https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058246061/10kwh-lifepo4-diy-battery-addition-here-is-my-write-up#latest and some dutch courage - I ordered the battery cells after a feed of pints so couldn't back out then 😅

Above is my march bill. April export will be close to 1200kwh!

And I'll add the support on this forum (Renewable Energies) is fantastic, no question is stupid and will always get answered.

I personally have learned so much, built a Seplos DIY battery and added to existing system.

There's even a series of YouTube videos done by Ghost dedicated to the Seplos, well worth a watch.

Jaysus, that Pinergy site is hard to find information on!

Their "Lifestyle Night Time" gives a 3 hour window @ 5.45c/kWh. Their feed in tariff gives 25c/kWh. I'm assuming the 5.45c is only for the first 12 months you're a customer? Any idea of what it jumps to afterwards? Also, does the FIT rate have an end date and gets reduced eg. 12 months? I know it's constantly reviewed, but if everything stayed the same in the energy markets, does that 25c hold?

Final question. Are you earnings credited to your bill, or can you get a cash refund?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 286 ✭✭S'

I’ve been with them for 16 months now, and there’s been no reduction on the 25c export rate.

As for the earnings, they’re credited to your account by default, but you can request a transfer to your bank account. Just keep in mind they require you to leave a minimum of €200 credit in your account, and the transfer usually takes a few days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66,631 ✭✭✭✭unkel

I'll echo what @S' said. I have been with Pinergy for over 19 months now. Even after your 2 year contract expires, you still stay on the 5.45c rate with 25c export

I have just signed up - mid contract - for another fresh 2 year contract. They allow you to do that if you are within 6 months of contract end. They have paid me numerous times into my bank account. Tbh, I have made a small fortune on the feed in tariff. Buying electricity for 5.45c and then immediately selling it back for 25c. More than enough to pay for all my electricity bills, including 3 EVs. And for all my gas bills. With some money left over. All my bills are gone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,087 ✭✭✭Soarer

Perfect. That's my plan too once I get the solar installed. Will rarely have to charge the 2 EVs, so that should help with the savings/profit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,417 ✭✭✭...Ghost...

I think i'll be moving to Pinergy once my Energia EV Plan expires in a couple of months. My pinch point was the 3 hours limit, giving me max 15kWh of storage rather than the 20kWh (really around 18kWh) I could get over 4 hours. I'll be connecting my 3000W Rectifier soon, so I will get up to 24kWh over a 3 hour period (realistically 20kWh) to keep me going during the darker months.

HI Ghost, yeah snap once Energia contract ends in June will switch to Pinergy (not sure if they do a dual fuel plan). I have the 3Kw Huawei rectifier so should get a similar charge across the window.

I've noticed with the 2 Wecos and Seplos that I'm getting about the same 18KwH charge into the 3 of them split 10KwH in Seplos and 8KwH in the Wecos.

Question for the experts as I've noticed the Seplos cells spread is very small across the range, I know when I was just running the Seplos the largest cell difference >30mV was occurring at the top end when the cells approach 3.65V (100 soc on the Seplos)

Its it better for the battery that the cells are not being spread so much, or is it worse or does it make no difference at all, (other than I am not maximizing the battery in terms of capacity in and out)?

I use a Nest to time the hot water with our gas boiler. Is there any sort of smart/timed switch that can be installed by an idiot to allow the immersion heat up during the 3 hour EV window?

Edit: Maybe this should be in the "Solar For Beginners" thread?!

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 7,013 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

Imbalance really only shows up when nearly full > 3.5 ISH or nearly empty. < 3v.

Only would be a concern if the battery was shutting down because of a high cell on charge or a low cell on discharge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 316 ✭✭mjatkey

Thanks graemark, yeap no issues with battery shutting down.

Also in recent weeks, I've realised if you don't keep your battery near or at 100% by not using Self Use mode (on the Solis), there is no issue with so called "clipping" as the excess solar goes into the batteries.

I didn't see this last year as I was running most of the summer in Self Use mode.

Is there any limit to the amount of power that the inverter will pass to the batteries once the 5Kw export is meet?

I know total power is relative to the panel numbers and their output but does the inverter "clip" power this also?

    Thanks

Not a great pic but this will give you an idea.

max VOC is 600v usually means about 12 panels per string, The Max power point of 460w longi panels has the current at almost 14 amps with a voltage of 33.74v, x 12 = 404v

So each mppt on the inverter could output 5.6kW. But max useable pv power is 8kW, so hints at a max of 4kW per mppt.

5kW to grid and 3kW to battery or the other way around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 316 ✭✭mjatkey

Ah I see, interesting so running your batteries at or near 100% (especially in the summer) is not always a good idea. Thanks

This will be different for each inverter. For the sunsynk 5k ecco hybrid inverter the max DC input is 6500W:

    For Solis it's 8000w:
