    Colm Cooper is the only player that I can think off that comes close. Who else from Kerry has been better than Clifford from play. Maurice Fitz was a great free taker, and fairly stylish on the ball. But he wasn't really a danger man. Declan O'Sullivan was more of a play-maker than playing in the inside forward line. Different role completely. His highlight reel is probably spectacular; but he used to go missing a lot in games.

    Spillane, Sheehy, O'Dwyer etc. were playing in a different era where forwards were afforded much more space, and proper tactics were not a large feature of the game in trying to bottle skillful forwards out of the play by whatever means possible. In reality, they were nowhere near David Cliffords standard of skills, shooting etc.

    I would rate Spillane, Sheehy, O'Dwyer, Egan and Liston all ahead of Clifford among Kerry forwards that I have seen in my lifetime, and Cooper, Fitzmaurice too.

    As for contemporaries, Con has more to him than Clifford, and a record of winning both hurling and football club championships. If Con was to lead Dublin to two of the next four All-Irelands, there would be no discussion, he would be ahead of Clifford.

    I get Clifford is an outstanding player, like many others, but the rush to proclaim him the GOAT is ridiculous.

    Whatever you are smoking, please pass it my way. Eoin Liston better than David Clifford !!!!!!! 😀😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,805 ✭✭✭downthemiddle

    What’s more Clifford is unlikely to win a hurling club championship anytime soon.

    David Clifford in the debate for the best minor all time. Senior is still open to question.

    Would Ciaran Kilkenny be Dublin's best minor ever?

    Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

    Didn't see the the under 20 match last night but the two pointers seem to make a big difference ,something we don't seem to able to do so far .I think Meath got three maybe four last night proberly made the difference .

    The two pointers mean that a ten point lead is no longer safe.

    The League is done and the All Ireland series is about to kick off. How do we rate our chances. For me this is the first campaign in 14/15 years were I'm not very optimistic. The League was real mixed bag. Some very good performances but some equally bad. Dublin really feel like a team in transition. And I have a feeling that Leinster won't be quite the usual cakewalk it has been for the last decade. I suspect we're going to have a frustrating few months ahead.

    The last time I was this pessimistic about our chances, two years ago, we went and won the bloody thing. Really made a fool of me that time.

    Anyway, in hindsight you can see how we won it, but this year I don't think that we've adapted to the new rules at all.

    Same as meself. But Dessie made a fool of a lot of people that year. Benching two main lads that lacked pace v Mayo in AIQF 2023.

    Then when wanting to control the lead bring on Kilkenny/Rock.

    Dublin:

     S Cluxton;

    E Murchan, M Fitzsimons, D Byrne;

    B Howard, J Small, L Gannon;

    B Fenton, J McCarthy;

    N Scully, S Bugler, C Costello;

    P Mannion, C O’Callaghan, C Basquel.

    Subs: J McCaffrey for Murchan (46), C Kilkenny for Bugler (48), P Small for Scully (54), T Lahiff for Costello (67), D Rock for Basquel (71)

    The more I think of it given context it is one of the best Dublin wins in recent times, from a tactical point of view. Only the 2019 AIF draw (a man down) was better in my opinion.

    Dublin are not “designed” for these new rules. But the way Bugler is playing he is capable of winning a match on his own (that on paper dublin should lose) with the “solo and go” and Alan Brogan type of footwork.

    I think anything beyond AIQF will be overachieving, anything less than that a flop. Fortunately Dublin won’t be playing Louth in Semi-Final away.

    If goes to form Louth v Dublin Leinster Final in CP. If it was provincial ground like the Leinster Semi Finals- I would be worried about a potential loss.

    Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

    According to the Indo tonight, seems John Small will be back for Dublin, definitely a big boost.

    I assume it’ll be bedlam for parking on Sunday in aughrim unless a few fields are opened up for cars to use

    May have a spare ticket if anyone needs one. 👍

    TBH if it was on form, I would think Louth the fourth ranked team in the province, with Meath and Offaly ahead of them. Might be wrong on that, but who knows. Having said that, Meath were well beaten by Monaghan recently. Would love to see Meath have a cut off Dublin, and who knows if game was to be played in Pairc Tailteann they might give it a lash. When I say'have a cut off', I mean not lose by 10 points or more as has been the norm for past decade.

    Don't expect to learn much tomorrow but looking forward to going to a different ground to see us play .The semi final in a neutral venue may not be the usual cakewalk this year ,we shall see .

    Bit of a breeze down here, dubs with it in second half I’d be surprised if we don’t win by +20

    Lovely setting for a match with the mountains in background. Still a massive issue with our kick outs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 958 ✭✭✭Dogsdodogsstuff

    Awful second half. Kick outs even worse, thought with the wind it would improve.

    wicklow left a lot of points behind there snd may rue that cause the final score was generous to Dublin. Even the missed peno going right into cons hands and the other goal was a shot to nothing.

    Hard to read too much into the game but that was bad.

    Anyone any inkling when the semi final is on.

    Can’t go if its the Sunday so guessing they will pencil it in for that date

    Poor performance overall a lot to work on ,next day shouldn't count any chickens Meath have kicked quite a few two pointers and that will give them a chance as we don't seem to be able to do likewise .

    I was sitting behind Oisin and he wasn’t pleased with free misses. You knew he knew they were costly.

    It’s hard to know but it wouldnt give you great confidence going forward. Didn’t think basquel was good today but open to correction. Didn’t look like anyone followed the penalty in which made it easy for Con

    Weird seeing a Dublin v Meath champo game outside of Crocker. Prob the best chance they have of beating us since the last time.

    I think that was the ground where Sherlock scored a goal in his first game for Dublin in the chmpionship. His shoe fell off as he smashed in a quality goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,571 ✭✭✭rolling boh

    Match was in Navan they Jayo scored that goal .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,537 ✭✭✭awaywithyou

    Meath almost always put in a decent performance when playing at home in Navan… not great away… bit like yesterdays game between meath and offaly i'll be surprised if the fact dublin have been operating in Div 1 doesnt give them an advantage.. but it should be closer than any of the meetings between the teams over the past 15 years…
