Don't trust them to do so but it'd be nice if Ipswich could keep Chelsea at bay now that they are a goal to the good. Chelsea have been my bet to drop out of this race for CL given their remaining fixtures and having European distractions but I definitely thought they would pick up 3 pts here.

    2-0 now!

If CL football is achieved then the gamble has been gigantically successful and stupid idiots on the internet like me need to shut their mouth.

I’m not even saying we won’t tbh, just pointing out how much of a boom or bust move the window was.

I understand the 3 loans are expensive without the chance of getting money back on them like with a normal signing but are we reaally going to struggle again with FFP after the sales of Diaby (60m euro) & Duran (71 sterling according to BBC) this season for such big money?

Just those two sales is a combined 124m sterling

    Today I feel Ipswich.

I am not an expert on the topic but apparently this summer is going to require some sales again.

Seems like the club is going to have to continue to hit Rogers, Duran type signings where were able to dramatically increase players transfer value if the club is to be able to continue competing with clubs who can get tonnes of transfers wrong and stay competitive.

I didn't trust them to hold out but even still a draw from them vs Chelsea is a big result for all the other teams looking for the top 5. Now lets hope Man Utd pull a surprise and get something from Newcastle

After the palace game i thought top 5 finish was over.

    Now look at us

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 23,030 Mod ✭✭✭✭Bounty Hunter

It is still going to be incredibly difficult… I mean look at Newcastle. Yes we may beat them next week but they way they are playing and with no cup distractions They could easily finish the season in 3rd place. Win their game in hand and they are 2pts ahead of Forest.

We are giving ourselves a chance but we are also going to need some of the other teams to continue to flounder for Villa to have a chance imo.

Edit: lets hope I spoke too soon re:Newcastle as Utd equalized.

There are 5 teams in the hunt, imo. Us, Newcastle, Forest, City and Chelsea. For 3 places. We only need to finish ahead of 2 of them.

Forest seem to have hit a wall, and Chelsea seem very inconsistent. They are our best bet to jump ahead of, I feel.

All that say, I'm not too worried about Newcastles game today. I agree that they are very likely to finish 3rd, but thats ok. There is still 4th and 5th to fight for.

id imagine we are in a fight for 5th with forest and Chelsea

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,886 ✭✭✭sc86

I think forest will bottle it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,404 ✭✭✭✭CSF

3/1 for top 5 now so it’s very achievable. Those next 2 games will be make or break. Any less than 3 points and it’s surely done. Ideally at least 4 though.

jaysus that seems a bit mad, think we will beat Newcastle and draw against city. 3/1 is massive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,404 ✭✭✭✭CSF

Well this is where the bookies differ from us. They have Villa and Newcastle closely enough priced (Villa are narrow favourites), and City are odds on to beat us.

Hopefully Villa continue to do what the team has been doing under Emery and make a mockery of the odds.

beat Newcastle on Saturday and it’s 5 wins in a row. Both sides will drop points too after, I’m not a betting man but 3/1 seems like a great price. Then again the bookies are rarely wrong

Yeah if we can get results in our next two I'll believe otherwise I am in the situation outlined above where I am hoping for a forest freefall because I kind of expect the two we play next (Newcastle & City) to nab the other top 5 spots. Yes they (Forest) lost 2 in a row but their fixtures aren't bad, especially when compared to some others.

This could be decided by the head to heads but Villa do have a few Banana skins later also. I mean based on this season they should be easy games but I will never feel 100% comfortable about Spurs and Man Utd as our final games. Especially when the likes of Forest play Leicester and West Ham then.

Looking to tomorrow night, Watkins, Onana and Asensio need to start. Watkins will work hard to pull their defence out of shape which is exactly what's needed for counter attacking football. Any of the few counters last week were largely stopped because they kept their defensive shape.

Onana looked like a nightmare for them to handle physically when he came on last week. I'd say our best chance of getting something would be to play a very physical game and slow down any progression they have.

Anyone recommend any decent watering holes close to New street station? Normally stay on broad st so don't usually be down that way before a game. Ta

I don’t drink but more often than not end up in the pub, I like the Purecraft pub on Waterloo st quiet with plenty of real ales, The Windsor on Cannon St has been a traditional Villa pub for years, The Briar Rose Bennett’s Hill is a Wetherspoons all of these about five minutes walk from New St.

The Shakespeare is the closet pub outside of the station and there is also a big Wetherspoons practically on New St Station concourse.

There's a joint called the Wellington that does a load of real ales if you're in to that type of thing, it's on Bennett's Hill, about 3 or 4 mins walk from New Street. I'll probably tip in there at a stage. (I love real ales)

    Thanks for that lads.

Turns out my apartment is a 30 second walk from the windsor pub, happy days!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,404 ✭✭✭✭CSF

    I also like The Windsor

I am seeing links for Norwegian kid Sverre Nypan. I dont know much about him, but he is very highly rated by all accounts.

Lots of big clubs are after him, so would be something of a coup.

what ever happened (again) to City's 151 charges.

There were lots of rumours at start of season that they expected to be docked points, hence why they were doing so poor in league, knowing it was pointless to chase it.

Be great if they were taken out of Top 5 contention - Villa, Newcastle and Forest all off on adventures

    Edit:

    Googled - https://www.football365.com/news/man-city-ffp-verdict-date-four-reasons-quite-wait-revealed

Looks like no verdict this season, lucky even to get it next season

    Just win our own games.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,342 Mod ✭✭✭✭artanevilla

Just to note having sampled, The Windsor is very much a Wetherspoons "style" pub.

Is this not on free TV?

Was hoping we were back in our happy place of Virgin Media after crumbling under the pressure of RTE2, but can only see match listed as Premier Sports

Last week Virgin showed the Barca Dortmund game, no idea why. This week I think its the same, but not 100% sure about that.
