Could be just me...but is a draw just harder now with a modern club...and ball I guess

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 749 ✭✭✭bakerbhoy

    I would agree.

The ball is larger as well as different cores.

Forged irons would also be required for the accomplished golfer.

The modern easy launch irons with hot faces are for straight and high and distance.

I imagine a lot of slicers and hookers out there would be reading that and thinking... that doesn't add up to me 😄

It's when you are trying to impart the shape...😁

I think it varies massively per person and club, you've too many variables. Lie angle, perimeter weighting, tungsten inserts, hollow faces, moveable weights, loft sleeves, offset. Then pair it up with your unique delivery.

My old stock loft/lie Mizuno JPX921 irons were flatter than the stock loft/lie Srixon ZX5s I stuck in this year. I could draw the Mizunos but the right miss was bad. Whereas the Srixons would draw automatically as they're more upright vs the old ones. The typical right miss is reduced to a small push fade too. So the fitting made it easier for me in that respect. It is trickier for me to try to fade the ball now but that is not my typical shot at all.

Had a rental set of old game improvement irons on holidays over Xmas. The offset meant I was hooking everything with my normal swing. Only "trying" to fade it, made a neutral ball flight.

Similarly, I had a low spin 3w (Sim2 ti) that loved to cut/fade if you struck near the heel. Changed to a stealth+ and it's much more forgiving with a slight draw tendency. That's without changing the loft sleeve settings but I am using a shorter shaft also.

My driving iron (Srixon ZX 3i) tends to be draw bias even though it has slightly less offset than my 4i. I put it down to the weighting.

the best shots I’ve ever hit have not been my best shots. They have all been the ones where I tried to shape the flight. It’s bloody orgasmic when you pull them off.

I had a family do in West Limerick yesterday, hence my inability to play in the society outing in Portmarnock.

Determined not to miss an opportunity, though, myself & de brudder played Newcastle West yesterday afternoon. What a cracking course - well designed with lots of interesting holes, and in excellent condition for February. Facilities were top class and the food in the clubhouse is highly recommended.

    I shot 97, giving me 37 points off a PH of 26.

If you're around, or fancy a road trip (2.5 hours from Dublin) I'd highly recommend it.

Not when its your natural shot shape 😁

Saying that, i often get in bother with how some holes are shaped, especially anything left to right off the tee, and having to use the full width of tee boxes to get away

First two full rounds of the season, new swing is bedding in pretty well but still some more work to go.

Just joined Elmgreen so run out on Friday and this morning.

Weather last Friday was mixed, we got pissed on by rain front 9 so bad we were considering calling it at 9 or 12, but sun came out and a lovely back nine saw a 5 stroke improvement vs the front. Finished on 91 (+21) with most of the damage done early (48/43 split).

Today was much nicer weather wise, but similar split strokes wise (shot 90, 48/42 split). Not completely sure where I lost the strokes this time round, hit more fairways etc, putting was about the same (with room to improve but same number of shots). Might be a warm up thing, not starting out strongly enough. No blowup holes so was a more even 48 but will need to work on it. I'm not hitting a tonne of greens, but part of that is new swing is changing my distances a bit. Friday I was missing short, this time I was missing long. Once that's dialled in should help improve it a bit.

Been playing really well recently, probably the best golf I've ever played.

Playing 15 hole comps for the past few weeks and I've got 33, 33 and 38 points. I'm honestly dying for counting to start so I can get my handicap down. I dunno what the process is for exceptional play cuts, but I'd be delighted to get cut at this point!

Just feel so confident over shots at the moment, tee shots are going reliably where I want them, approach shots are solid, chipping has been good. What's limiting me a bit at the moment is putting. That 38 points could easily have been a few more points if I hadn't missed some putts I should have got. Pity that putting is the most boring part of golf to practice.

I followed up a really nice +2 gross society outting at PM links last month with another good showing of a 12 hole round of +1 gross a few days ago at my home course. It was a strange 12 holes which I opened cold with 5 bogies in the first 6 holes, part of this was getting the feels of new driver in the bag and not having hit a ball for a couple of weeks. I eagled during the round, and had three birdies in a row. I also lipped for birdy on each of the last three holes on three separate putts. No doubt placing conditions are helping somewhat but hoping I can continue the run on the run into summer.

Currently playing par 5's particularly well. There's 4 par5's on the 12 hole route. I was -4 gross on these 4 holes and just missed an up and down attempt on the last par 5 to be -5 gross shooting eagle, birdie, birdie, and almost another birdie on the last.

Am still enjoying my 14 hole rounds here at the moment. Nice and quick too. Had my first bad round with driver in a few weeks on Sunday, topped a few again unfortunately but i recovered well with the exception of our first par 5. Its 3 good shots to the green all day and when you make a mess of the drive, a bogey is a good score. Unfortunately not this week. Like previous rounds, I've hit some lovely irons and approach shots and these definitely kept my score going, highlight was a 200 yard 5 iron hit pin high on our Par 3 12th, missed the putt though!!! I've changed to left hand low for shorter putts and thankfully its 2 rounds in a row with no 3 putts, a stat I'm absolutely delighted with. I've averaged 30 points fr 14 holes for the Winter League.

31 points for 14 holes including a scratch, lets keep this up for the year.

Had our first 18 holes of the year in my home course at the weekend and I had a respectable 35 points playing off 9. Definitely by far my best round since mid August last year. I had a lesson in the days leading up to it and something has clicked. I've finally got a good understanding of a the basic swing mechanics for me and what I need to feel even if I don't always do it. Still far from perfect and there was plenty of poor shots during this round but my chipping helped a lot. Also a couple of 3 putts and one lost ball so plenty of room for improvement.

I am struggling with the fact that as my handicap stands I basically need to shoot in the 70's to break 36 points or even par and I've only shot int the 70s once last year. But if I want to be an single figure handicap I need to accept that and change my mindset a bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,906 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

I guess in terms of handicap being single figures, you don't have to necessarily panic about shooting sub 80 to have a single digit as it's driven by differential rather than strokes.

So you could be playing single digits without any rounds sub 80 really (whilst likely not winning any competitions though 😄)

Well done, I could clearly see your potential at killarney 2023. But I also could see your short game getting in the way of that back then, great to see you make strides on cleaning up that side of things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,659 ✭✭✭token56

Yes I absolutely understand. I had 3 rounds in the space of 1 week last year of an 79, 80, 80, score differentials of 7.8, 8, and 9 and took me from and index of 12.0 to 10.2. Another couple like that on the right course and I'd be there. But as you say unfortunately always going to be around +/- 2 points/strokes within net par so unlikely to be winning comps.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I know Youtube is a minfield when it comes to advice/swing tips but anyone who struggles with their short game should read/listen/watch Dan Grieve. There is obviously lots of nuance but at a high level makes he makes very simple.

On the other end of the spectrum...

Played Dungarvan today and was pretty pleased overall, though I still felt I left shots on the board. Shot 96 which is pretty average given my handicap is around 22 (as per the app)

    ===

    Pro's:

Felt like I took a big step towards understanding the driver mechanics. Was all over the place last week but after trying to break it down and a good range session midweek, I'm more confident in hitting it relatively consistently. Driver accuracy was at 70% which is a great sign.

Irons are definitely being struck better, keeping my chest ahead of the ball which means better strikes, still thinning the odd one but overall the contact is better and I'm getting green side in reg more often.

Birdied the 13th, albeit it was down to 90 yards with the winter tees. Still, a distance I'd have struggled with before but now I can hit a full 60 and be confident in it. Pitched about a foot and a half from the hole and stuck the putt then.

Made four pars in a row at West Waterford last week as well, so definitely the game is trending up, just need to stop the blow-up holes

    Cons:

Slow start again, tee shot was alright but hacked my way around the first five holes being honest.

Kept hitting my 4 hybrid and was stubborn because it's usually a club I like. Had a lot of 180ish yard approaches with the winter conditions and kept missing left big time.

With the ground that also meant a lot of lost balls that were plugged in the areas off the fairway/greens. Had a small bit of a meltdown on the 4th when I pured a 6-iron and arrived on scene to see absolutely no ball at all. Never found it. Losing balls like that really gets in my head, can understand when it's a poor shot but frustrating when you do hit a good one and you still have to take a penalty.

Still trying to develop some touch around the greens. Putter wasn't bad (just under 2 putts per hole on average, one 3-putt) but the chipping isn't great. Can't decide whether to stick with one club, or to switch between clubs based on the situation. Trying to bump and run where I can but the boggy conditions make that difficult.

    ===

Probably my last one before the next boards outing so it's nice to have had a good one. Last time was literally my first competitive round ever, so will be a lot better organised next time around.

Got out for a round this morning in Elmgreen, pretty happy with how it went. Played off the black tees and shot 87 (17 over) which was pretty good for me, but main thing is didn't have any big blowup holes. Four double bogeys but didn't let any hole get away from me, smart recovery shots and taking medicine if I ended up out of position.

Three pars and a birdie, with a putt for birdie on the 18th as well, much better showing than the last two trips out. New swing is getting more consistent and regripping the clubs has definitely helped as well (swapped the irons to midsize grips).

Playing a team matchplay with work there next month and feels like I could contribute on a couple of holes which is nice.

One thing that is catching me out is as the new swing beds in, my yardages have changed a bit so will need to track them closely to make sure I'm grabbing the right club each time. One or two went over the back of greens at distances where that wouldn't have been a risk before. Got a little clap from the two germans playing in front of me on 17 for the birdie there as they were waiting to the side for the teebox of 18 to clear.

First proper 18 hole round of the year this morning at my home course, was supposed to be counting but with a lot of overnight rain resulted in placing everywhere. Am raging as it was one of my best rounds there in a long time.
Very steady on most aspects of my game apart from 2 brain farts off the tee in either 9 but only one costing me a score and my only scratch thankfully. Had a good few birdie putts but didn’t convert any but still happy to get pars. Any time I got into trouble, I recovered well and drained a few decent length putts.
21 points each 9 for 42 in total which included a scratch and a couple of 1 pointers, very happy with that.

Delighted here, I won the weekend competition. First win since I moved to Tullamore.
    Raging it wasn’t counting though.

Well done @charlieIRL, a standard Society cut based on exceptional scores is needed. 😀

Got to go on my annual college lads golf trip. This is the one where I always play terribly. It's been going years and I've never gotten to 30 points. This year, the low handicap of the group (he was giving me 18 shots last year) was out due to injury. We'd never bothered with a lowest gross for obvious reasons, but this year I got one because I thought it would be funny to not have him win the only one we ever had. The next best handicap after me is 13 shots worse, so it should have been comfortable. Headfort new was the course.

The obvious happened - I had my joint worst score since getting my handicap back in 2019. 100 shots. The main problem I believe were pre golf breakfast pints. I should have just left them on the table, but didn't want to be a knob so I drank them. I pulled my first two shots into trees never to be seen again. Ended up with a 9. Pushed my next tee shot right and found a lake. Dropped, pulled my 5 wood a bit left and found a stream with my next ball. Next hole I was just short of hitting an excellent approach, but it rolled back into water. 5 balls lost in 3 holes, 11 over par. It wasn't all bad, I hit 6 greens in regulation which was decent. And parred 2 of them which wasn't. I had 5 pars overall, if I'd managed to 2 putt them I'd have had 9 which would be excellent for me. The quintuple, two quadruple, and two triple bogeys were the real killers though. Even with the 100 shots, I just lost the gross by 1.

Day 2 we played Killeen castle. We played foresomes for an easier day. I was paired with a lad who played off 52 the first day and came in with 6 points. I must say I really enjoyed it! I played really well which helped. And I think he enjoyed not hacking it up 18 fairways.

My next round booked in is in Mount Juliet. Please God I get my sh1t together before that. I suppose the first thing I'll do is not drink pints for breakfast.

Went out yesterday to Raffeen Creek, first time ever playing it. Absolutely mighty 9 hole course, some superb views, fairly short/compact course. Would be absolutely ideal for a senior golfer. Made 6 pars and a birdie, one or two disaster holes but overall touch around the greens was good and driver largely behaved itself.

Realise that perhaps I was being a bit harsh on myself over the winter, and finding now with summer conditions and the ball not plugging everywhere that I'm actually shooting a lot lower. Onwards and upwards!

Good for you. I thought I had the game cracked a month ago then just carded nearly my worst ever 9 holes in a comp in the club on Saturday! Greenside bunker with my tee shot on my first (the tenth) then five, count them, FIVE shots to get out onto the green followed by a three putt. You’d need patience for this game 😀

I got out for a sneaky practice in Roganstown yesterday in advance of a weekend trip to Mount Juliet. And what a strange round I played.

I started well - two very good up and downs for par. Then the 3rd hole I topped my drive. I hit plenty of bad shots, but that's not usually one of them. Then I topped a 3 wood. Then I hit a really solid 9 iron that just landed the wrong side of a ridge, but I made a great two putt. So I've started very well. Then I sliced two drives OB - scratch on the 4th. Perfect drive on 5, followed by a shank into the water. Managed to salvage a bogey with a great up and down. Then a shank into the water on the next, I ended up 3 putting for a triple. Onto the 8th, another great drive and an excellent up and down for par. Then a 3 putt bogey on the next and a two putt par on the one after. So some great 1 putts and bad 3 putts. And great hits and shanks and balls topped. Onto the back 9…

Topped my drive into a stream, dopped, chipped out, topped a 4i, stuck a 9 iron to 6 feet and holed the putt. Next hole I was on the green in reg - 3 putted. Next hole, 3 putted for a double. Another 3 putt on the one after that for a triple (I was unlucky in fairness going into two bunkers). 2 putt par on 14, followed by 3 3 putts for bogies / double bogies on 15-17. And a two putt par on the last.

Now in fairness, I got a call from the childminder on 11 and wasn't sure if I'd need to leave the course to pick up the kids. That was a distraction and probably a contributor to 6 3 putts in 7 holes. But still. It was such an odd putting round in particular. 8 3 putts, 5 1 putts and 5 2 putts. And I'm used to my bad drives going onto different courses / planets, but topping a couple was odd. And the shanks were brutal too, but there were some great irons as well.

So I've no idea how I'm playing after that.

I played it on Monday, and did the exact same thing off the tee on the 3rd. Ended up pushing my 3rd massively out of bounds too, so scratched that hole. Actually played ok overall, with 34 points. 14 on the front, with 2 scratches. One of my playing partners then pointed out how massively i had my shoulder pointing to the right on pretty much every shot, which i really wasn't aware of, and once i changed that, i was hitting the ball really well.

Scratched 10 due to losing a ball that should never have been in danger of being lost (over the hill on the left onto the adjacent fairway). Didn't even consider hitting a provisional. Moved on and had 5 pars in a row, with some excellent drives. Just missed two birdies on those holes two, and again on 17 with a shot to around 8 feet. Hit a fantastic drive on 18, left myself 240 yards to the green, and just ended a foot short with a nice 3h. 3 putt unfortunately, but still very happy with the round.

Can't wait to get out again, see if it was a blip or if it was as helpful as i hope.

Went 3 better today and more importantly, it was counting. One silly scratch but steady for most of the round once the driver was put in the bag

45 points and at least 1.4 cut off the handicap.
