Well technically you “ got away with it “ for ten years because as can be clearly seen it’s bulging out of the sizer.

Well that one doesn't fit in any direction. Apart from the bulge, you can see its too tall

Isn't there something about airlines getting charged extra if their passengers remain in the terminal longer than contract agreed? I've always assumed that was the reason Ryanair shuffle people out the doors and leave them waiting anywhere but at the gate?

You got away with it for a long time, it's clearly oversized!

no, it’s to aid in their quick turnaround times…

They want every passenger ‘boarded’ (boarding card scanned through) before the plane is ready to load so that when the plane is ready to load, as many passengers as possible are already waiting to get on board..

That's total rubbish and makes no sense whatsoever. If anything they'd love people to be in the terminal longer so that they spend more money. DAA want people to be in the airport 2-3 hours before a flight so that you can buy overpriced food and drink from which they profit substantially as they operate a revenue share model combined with rents. (standard retail and food court model these days)

Planes have a tight time window to take off. At busy times, if you miss your take off slot you could be waiting 30 minutes. That can lead to delays all day for that particular plane and that costs money. Hence Ryanair (and most others) want you on board, seated and buckled up 10 minutes before take-off. And that means having passengers final checks done as the incoming flight lands in some cases.

They only sell 100 priority/ to access to take a wheely bag on each flight, everything else has to go under seats.

Flew to Brussels with them in 2022. My daughter's carry on bag was deemed too big at the gate at the top of the stairs. The girl put a sticker on it and said her colleague at the bottom of the stairs would process the payment.

Halfway down the stairs I took the sticker off it and put it in my pocket. Strolled past the staff at the bottom door and headed straight for the plane.

Ye that wouldn't happen these days, they won't let you through the gate if the bag hasn't been paid for.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/your-money/2025/04/09/ryanair-dismisses-hundreds-of-reader-baggage-experiences-as-misinformed-hearsay/

A lot of people contacting the Irish Time about it. Some don't get specific and just say something like 'a bag that worked for years is now being charged' but some are specifically mentioning that their bags fit the sizers but because it was over the sticker they got charged or that the bag fit the sizer but they were still charged.

It clearly did fit, but the check-in staff pointed out a line of yellow tape inside the sizer and told me the bag couldn’t extend over this yellow line. So Ryanair’s response to you that “if it fits in our bag sizer (which is bigger than our agreed dimensions), it gets on free of charge” is not true; my bag fitted and I was still charged.

On my recent flight from Dublin to Lisbon, the entire flight had to put their bags in the sizers at the boarding gate and many of the bags did not fit within the yellow stickers within the sizers. Many passengers had to pay an additional €75 per person to put their bags in the hold,

The bag fit in the sizer, but the Ryanair staff said it needed to be behind the sticker.

My bag fit in the sizer, but I was still charged.

My partner and I recently flew to the Canary Islands with Ryanair and my partner was hit with a €75 baggage charge in the same way your readers described. Noting Ryanair’s response, I wonder will they be in contact to arrange a refund, as the offending bag clearly fit into the sizer.

Turned out it fitted the sizer but was pronounced too big.

In Knock, it fit perfectly within the sizer, but the Ryanair agent said it was too deep, so I had to pay.

Why does Conor Pop not challenge this quote?

“We receive occasional complaints from passengers, that their bag was “only slightly” bigger than our sizer, or “only the wheels did not fit” in the sizer. These claims are baseless. If the entire bag doesn’t fit within the sizer (and our sizers are bigger than our agreed max dimensions), then the bag is outsized and will be charged.

I have seen people charged even though the bag fits in the sizer...are they saying if the bag fits in the sizer but the wheels go over the tape then it is oversized. Surely it's one or the other?

I agree that saying I've used a bag for 10 years without an issue and now it is, is not an excuse. It's just the debate over the actual specs of the bad or the sizer. Guess it's easier to go with the spec of the bag, including wheels.

You can have a bag that's the exact dimensions allowed, if it slightly bulges out at the top, charged. The bag is the right size.

Conor Pope is highlighting this issue.

Ryanair's statement is like something written by a MAGA spokesperson.

The statement is only just short of calling the IT "fake news".

They are blustering and doubling down but it's clear there is an issue here.

Highlighting an issue yeah but nothing else, he's well known for using stuff he gets on X etc and dressing it up as research or a story.

Heaven forbid he might challenge a response.

He has provided testimony from Ryanair's customers that there is a serious issue here.

They think they can tough it out, let's see.

Ryanair took people's money they are accountable not Conor Pope.

    Thanks for that summary.

Your expectation of a so called consumer affairs journalist is clearly lower than mine.

For what it's worth I think he does ok.

In this instance he hasn't had an opportunity to interview anyone from Ryanair.

They are just issuing statements and rubbishing his work.

Anyway I think we both know the real problem is Ryanair who are ignoring the genuine concerns of both their customers and the media.

An Op Ed today on the Irish Times, with a distinct note of sarcasm about it

A lot of passengers take the piss when it comes to bringing on oversized luggage. I'm glad that Ryanair are clamping down on it. The allowed measurements are very clear. The snobs at the irish times have an unhealthy fixation with Ryanair.

    Completely agree.

There was a period there recently they were lax enough. And I frequently saw people with three or 4 items. A wheel bag, a small backpack (no issue, both allowed) but then under the arm a massive handbag and maybe then a plastic bag from duty free.

Wheelie case- fine, you paid for it

    Backpack within dimensions- perfect

Handbag then in addition to the above- you're taking the pss

Plus the duty free. Same type of people then will cram every piece into the overheard lockers and be too selfish to put at least one bag in their leg space under the seat in front.

Leads to less overhead space for the rest of the passengers and also longer boarding and exiting times.

Now that they're enforcing a rule that always existed, people are complaining. Instead of acknowledging the other times they got away with taking the mick as being lucky/availing of goodwill and blind eyes.

They explained it well, but if they are actually Ryanair staff as opposed to actors I can imagine them getting a lot of attention/abuse when they go back to their real jobs.

The duty free bag is allowed in addition to whatever baggage allowance you've paid/not paid for.

Listed under "what items are permitted on board" here

A wheely bag that fits the specs and the Ryanair sizer (I've tried it), just make sure the wheels are turned inwards from the yellow tape.

To those saying all wheely caes fit, that's the point...many don't. They may fit the sizer but the sizer is bigger than the specs so if they go over the tape line, you will be charged.

You could have used a bag for 10 years and been getting away with it, it won't work anymore.

Is it just me or does the woman in the second video look AI generated. Something off about it

The audio seems slightly out of sync with the video alright, not sure if it's AI generated content though 🤔

Even if it is, the official Ryanair account posted it and it's hosted on their website.

Surely to god the easiest thing Ryanair can do is to make the sizers the actual size they allow, and don't have any open sides on the sizer or rely on stickers? Insert your bag at the top, and have a flap they pull down that has to go flush.. if it doesn't go down, your bag is sticking out and it's too big. If it does go down, your bag fits inside a 55x40x20 space.

They've made this harder than it needs to be for some reason.
