Is there any consensus as to why stock prices are rebounding slightly?

Because there doesn't seem to be any signs as of yet that Trump will reverse course on the tariffs.

The question is will maga continue if Trump were to keel over on a tee off?

I would be quite worried about how fanatical MAGA would readily accept that an unhealthy 78 year old could die of natural causes. The current environment is ripe for conspiracy theories to be bought easily.

I'm really not convinced that you do.

Are registered members of the Libertarian Party now Republicans because of how they voted in that 1 election? Because that's what you're saying.

The reality is non-Republicans voted for him, if you're saying they're all MAGA then they're all Republicans now too right?

And rightly so. He's being checked more frequently than almost anyone on Earth and his cholesterol levels are....many people are saying, the greatest cholesterol levels perhaps the world has ever seen....many people are saying. But it won't be believed by the crazy left....because their cholesterol is very weak......and Don's cholesterol is so very strong.

Investors think mistakenly that they have bottomed out. If that's the case, they ain't seen nothing yet. It will be interesting to see the market when Trump slaps on an extra 50% on China in a while.

He will probably wait for the closing bell.

He should have named his book "The Art of the Deal when you're not dealing with China"

Could be as simple as markets always overreact on both upside and downside. There's a lot of momentum strategies(honestly I think most but they won't all admit to it) out there that will ride out any trend.

I think it's that negotiations with partners are underway. The market thinks the tariffs will not last.

If China is to respond with a 50% extra tariff on the US they'll very likely announce just before the US market opens for maximum impact.

Should be noted that Trump is no Republican : MAGA-ism is effectively a brand new right wing populist or far right movement with little or no connection to the Republican Party of Reagan and the two Bushes (similar to the distinction between Reform and the old Conservative party in the UK).

The market is calculating in that Trump has had a pattern of imposing some utterly stupid measure and then walking back from it 2 days later.

If he didn’t, and digs in instead the market will likely plummet.

China is also looking at Services which is interesting, as well as non-tariff retaliations such as cancelling patents from US companies within China and withdrawing from cooperation on the fentanyl issue

My thinking is there's nowhere to go, even gold which always does well in a crisis hasn't really responded.

It's too late to do anything really. Amazon have their international stores to fall back but Apple which is completely reliant on China is fooked.

If the Trump tariffs remain you might see companies with risk spread globally being a target for US investors looking to offload out companies heavily impacted. It's a realignment of both international trade and the domestic us economy.

Markets thought Trump will spend 4 years playing golf

Instead they got over a year worth of gains wiped out

And uncertainty worse than Covid where no company can make short, medium or long term plans

No its not what i'm saying at all, MAGA does not equal republican as its effectively a party hiding within a larger party, the only requirement for MAGA membership is agreeing with what trump says and a vote for him is again a tacit agreement of what he says and does therefore if you voted for him you absolutely voted for MAGA whether you like it or not. Saying you voted for him but don't support MAGA is a lazy cop out of people not wanting to deal with the consequences or be blamed for their actions in the voting booth.

There is actually around 5-6 separate parties across the political spectrum all hiding under the 2 umbrellas of Democrats and Republicans, similar to the Tories and Labour in the UK. They hide under those 2 umbrellas as the First Past the Post electoral system being a horrifically undemocratic voting system forces them to so they can get elected.

If they had a more democratic electoral system such as our own PR/STV that allowed those parties to exist as their own viable political entities then those people would hopefully have voted for someone that more aligns with their views however there isn't so they didn't BUT they still made a choice to vote for MAGA or not MAGA, that is unfortunately binary and as far as trump is concerned a vote for him was a vote for and an endorsement of MAGA. And that is all that matters right now as he fully believes all 77 million people who voted for him agree with him.

The EU who put 70% tariffs on many Chinese goods are calling for the Chinese to show restraint.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 363 ✭✭CoffeeImpala

This is just a question of simple English.

It doesn't matter what a voter's political ideology is. If they have voted for a MAGA candidate then they have shown their support for MAGA and can therefore be called a MAGA supporter.

That they may have also voted for Libertarian or actual Republican candidates on other ballots is irrelevant. They could have chosen to abstain from voting for the MAGA candidate or voted for the other side of they wanted to be anti-MAGA.

They are saying that Japan are front of the queue now for negotiation, they're a very very important partner for cars and electronics

    Which goods and why?

If Trump was applying targeted tariffs to China for unfair trade practices, the stock markets around the globe wouldn't be tanking.

The situation isn't remotely the same and I suspect you know that or you'd be able to present more than a one liner.

Remember there were MAGA candidates in other races on the SAME ballot in many many States, as well as referenda

You could vote anti-MAGA in 9 out of 10 races on the same ballot

This is my point about nuance

60% of Amazons operating income comes from AWS. They're far less exposed to this than almost any other major retailer.

To protect workers in Germany,France and Italy. Otherwise we would all buy Chinese steel, cars etc .

Irish consumers pay tariffs to keep German car workers in a job.

Amazing how it works for Germany.

Did you even read the link you posted?

    This is what it says:

The move follows a historic rise in imports from China, which spurred an in-depth investigation by the European Commission that found widespread state-support for China’s EV industry. The decision to approve tariffs is a major shift in the bloc’s relationship with China, whose surging auto sector is now seen as a threat to the EU’s own industry. This show of steadfastness in the face of China’s non-market practices will face the true test of unity in the months and years ahead..
    The proposed anti-subsidy measures were
backed by considerable evidence and were designed to be compatible with WTO rules, in contrast to the blunter and more sweeping actions from Washington.

So your own link just proves the situations are different. Well done. Amazing how often that happens to those peddling anti EU nonsense.

JD Vance: We borrow money from Chinese peasants to buy the things those Chinese peasants manufacture

China: It is surprising and sad to hear such ignorant and impolite words from this vice president

Germany was tariffing something it already has high production capacity in.

Trump is tariffing things he has no production capacity it. He is also tariffing penguins.

So by that logic there's plenty of MAGA supporters who voted for Kamala Harris

Sorry, I'm not buying this at all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,327 ✭✭✭fly_agaric

Personally, would rather buy stuff off the Germans and French and have the EU fight the Trump admin. (and other mercantilists, incl. the CCP) to protect their industry than pump even more wealth into Russia's "unlimited friend" for some short sighted bargains.

They are laughing at us IMO, while providing all the necessary to fuel a genocidal war over on other side of this continent.

Erecting more trade barriers between the US and China is probably the only policy Trump has correct (but it is a stopped clock, so much else is wrong, any "good" from it lost).

Average can refer to mean (most common use), median or mode. Median is the 'middle value' with 50% either side of it.
