Coscoran gave it a bash. Fine result

    Two entertaining 3k’s.

I thought Healy had a good run but didn’t have the kick on the last lap. She should be very happy with her indoor season, hopefully it continues for the outdoor season. The BEEB were a bit mixed on Houlihan. Nice to see Hull medal

Jacob has to work a bit for his victory but he looked comfortable on the home straight, not easy doubling up. His 7:46 was a SB. I thought Coscoran ran well, I’m a bit unsure of his championship abilities but he did well today. A second medal for the Aussies, they are having a good championships.

A fantastic performance by Kate O’Connor yesterday, she is a superb gutsy competition. It’ll be interesting to see her in the Outdoors.

is the World Indoors always this poorly attended or is the travel to China putting athletes off?

I think it usually get a decent crowd, I think Glasgow was a sellout last year. It should never have went to Nanjing, not when they can't fill a 1,000 seater venue.

From an athlete perspective, a lot of Europeans are obviously skipping it because it was so close to Appeldoorn. Otherwise I'd imagine the trek to China isn't very appealing to most, as you alluded to.

Part of the problem was this event was supposed to be on during Covid and it's been slotted in this year. It wouldn't normally occur in the same year as the Europeans. An extra event and the travel has likely put some off.

This was a rescheduling of the 2020 event, normally every second year but it's going to be 3 consecutive years now with it in Poland next year.

Yeah. Nauseating to see Houlihan on the podium.

I think Sarah Healy missed the break a little too, but solid performance overall. Coscoran had a decent outing too.

Pentathlon suits Vanninen, she's not much of a javelin thrower. Will be interesting to see where she stands relative to O'Connor in Heptathlon later in the year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,480 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

the difference between the two in Nanjing was literally Vanninen’s shot put. She won by 79 and 78 of those were in the shot put.

I think Vanninen has a pretty big ceiling outdoors though. World junior champ twice. She, like Kate, was carrying an injury in Paris. She was top 10 in the world champs not long after her 20th birthday.

Sarah ran 8:14 there . Way out!

She'll be disappointed with that, but would've been tough to make the final either way.

Anything under 8 seconds would have seen her through.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 335 ✭✭horsebox1977

She can throw 49m and can throw just under 17m in the shot.

She's some athlete to be fair.

Efram Gidey broke Alistair Cragg Irish 10k track record of 27:40.55 with a 27:26.95 two/three days ago in California.

Salwa Eid Naser's... training is going well anyway, opens her season with a 48.94 over 400m at the Felix Sanchez classic. Also set a 200m PB of 22.45, with the races being ran about an hour apart. Rumours that she dropped a 9.97 100m when WADA came knocking are unconfirmed for now though.

Grand Slam Track starts this weekend in Jamaica, will be broadcast on TNT sports for anyone who has that. I'll be watching anyway, will be intrigued to see how it works out. Entry lists below

Grand slam track about to start now on TNT sports. Startlists for the entire weekend below

Lots of interesting races to look forward to. Really intrigued to see Moraa vs Hull in the women's 800 tonight.

Also looking forward to seeing if Agnes Ngetich can bring her crazy fast times from the roads to the track in the women's 3000m.

The attendance is pathetic. You'd have more people at Cork City Sports

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,764 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Definitely far more at Cork City sports 🫣 Probably a mistake opening this in Jamaica. Hopefully the racing will be good though!

Liking grand slam track so far, think it's got potential to be a success. Really like the doubling up format, and seeing athletes trying out distances outside their comfort zone.

Race of the weekend so far was last night's mens 1500, with 800m specialist Wanyonyi taking down Hocker, Nuguse and Kerr. It was a relatively slow race, with 3:35 being the winning time, but Wanyonyi definitely has the ability to be a factor over 1500 should he choose to switch/double up.

Proper racing for a change instead of watching a time trial.

Josh Kerr looked like Bambi on Ice there in the 800. 🤪

Agonisingly close to podium for Efrem Gidey in the European half marathon in Brussels this morning. Out sprinted for 3rd place in 1.01.55

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 163 ✭✭BP_RS3813

I saw that. Think he made a mistake going off with Jimmy Gressier for the first 5 miles. Eframs PB for 10k on the road is 27:43 and Gressiers 10k split was 27:50.

Going @10k pace for the first 5 miles of a HM probably took more out of him then he liked.

How did Ann-Marie McGlynn get on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,906 ✭✭✭Ceepo

    She was 26th in 1.15.53

Wishing all the best to both teams in the 10k

Teams for world relays announced earlier today. We are entering teams in the women’s, men’s, and mixed 4x400m relays.

Great to see Adeleke, Mawdsley, Becker, and Healy all travelling to China. Rachel McCann is also selected. She is improving quickly and could possibly challenge Phil Healy for a spot.

The men’s team is lead by Chris O’Donnell, Cillín Greene, and Jack Raftery. 17 year old Conor Kelly is also selected.

We should be able to field a strong mixed relay team too. Would be great to see the men qualify for Tokyo.

4th place and 22.57 200m for Adeleke at the Tom Jones memorial

This equals the standard for Tokyo (not sure if she already had it) so she can double if she wants to.

So Faith Kipyegon will be attempting a sub 4 minute mile in a couple of months 👀

I'd almost forgotten, but the Diamond League starts tomorrow! Virgin Media 3 will be broadcasting the action from Xiamen from 12pm. Entry lists here

    https://xiamen.diamondleague.com/programme-results/

Intriguing to see Faith Kipyegon starting her season over 1000m. She came very close to the world record a couple of times back in 2020, I wonder if that's on her mind tomorrow. Or perhaps it's too early in the season.

Also looking forward to seeing Chebet and Tsegay facing off over 5000m, a nice treat this early in the season. Meanwhile, Adeleke will be competing over 200m at Shanghai Diamond League next weekend.
