    Damn…

I'm still trying to complete my first Gold Stake run, using the Plasma Deck. Got to about the 6th Ante a few nights ago but one of my Jokers expired and I missed out on one of the blinds by less than 50 points.

Yeah, I had to take a break from trying for the gold stake, went back to just trying new decks, working to unlock all the cards. It's actually funny how easy it is when you go back to the basic stake.

9 Cards and 2 vouchers left to complete the collection, and only 5 of those cards are locked.

Got 220 million with the set up above (with a single card, lol), but even that wasn't enough to get through the level. All good things, I guess….

Was just looking around for Xenoblade X here and was wondering is there a site that checks multiple sites at once for physical games?

I remember using find-game.co.uk back in the day but don't think there's a modern equivalent.

Used to use kelkoo but its going back a good few years, not sure if it's still active or as good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,045 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Thanks. Looks like it's still active anyway.

What was everyone's experience with Hogwarts Legacy?

I am a casual gamer and have never seen or read a Harry Potter installment but I have thoroughly enjoyed the game.

I'm 43 Hours in and at 62% I very much doubt I'll be doing all the merlin trials etc so my time with the game is coming to an end but I must say it's been an unexpected 43 hours of Joy.

I'll even go as far as saying its my favourite game of this decade thus far.

Has anyone tried the First Berserker: Khazan? I couldn't resist after seeing previews, really enjoying it so far.

The first two bosses are proper git gud but done in the right way; making you learn the game and have a fantastic sense of achievement when you do beat them.

Only just heard from someone that Verdansk is back 👀

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,106 ✭✭✭Unearthly

Yep I’m about a third of the way through it. Combat is so good. There is a huge amount of depth to the combat. The boss fights feel like end game level in hardness but are very fair. You learn all the different options the game gives you to survive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,585 ✭✭✭McFly85

It is and it plays just as I remember. And I’m still terrible at it!

It's like going back in time to COVID lock downs. 😁

Yep, reviews are suggesting Blue Prince really is that good. Very excited now - don’t even think Outer Wilds quite had that level of acclaim on release as it took some outlets til GOTY to come around on it.

Nice! I want to read some but i want to go in completely blind as well.

It's definitely got that Souls-like vibe, but not as punishing once you get the rhythm. Funny thing — when I get too tilted, I take a break and chill a bit on site. Total opposite of Khazan, but hey, balance is everything I've been wondering if I should get it. What's it like in terms of difficulty? Souls-like or something easier?

Went back to Hollow Knight as i never tried the dlc but got a bit bored of it. Started a new game and it's just magic. I remember first playing and giving up quickly as i had no idea where i was going or what i was doing. I forget a lot of the early game stuff so it's just a joy to find what's on the next room, also beating the first boss so easily and remembering how i thought it was impossible when i first faced him. I miss my dash and other abilities but I'm definitely glad i started a NG.

Hollow Knight is fantastic until it's not. It's a great example of how the perfect length for this type of game is 8-12 hours. After that 12 hour mark it felt like I'd mastered my moveset and explored most of the map and for the next 12 or so hours I was just checking off bosses. There's a bit too much content.

The DLC is worth doing with a caveat. I enjoyed the new boss fights and they were very challenging.

The caveat is the godmaster dlc. It's basically 3 boss rushes and the last one is absolute nonsense. I've beaten Ninja Gaiden, TMNT, Contra Hard Corps, Super Mario Bros, Battletoads, got a 1cc clear in ghouls n' ghosts and loads of other very tough games but the last boss rush broke me. It's the only time I can remember where I had to put the controller down and give up. It's basically every boss in the game one after the other except many of them are upgraded to Uber bullshit mode. Some feel like RNG that you beat them. Want to practice a boss? Toughshit, you'll have to play 20-45 minutes to have one shot at them.

    It isn't worth it.

It’s a lot harder than Dark Souls, Demon’s Souls Bloodborne and Elden Ring. Every boss feels like one of the toughest Sekiro bosses or the final boss in Elden Ring DLC pre nerf. However once you learn all the different counter options they become a lot easier. The combat though is a different level than the above. Elden Ring combat feels outdated in comparison.

Agreed that its generally more difficult than DS, BB and ER. But I do think the game is also more fair in terms of the more you learn and progress the easier it gets. Also - there is an easy mode !

I don't play Fortnite but it is almost unavoidable in its coverage these days. I see Sabrina Carpenter is a character in it now.

It's such a weird game. It hoovers up absolutely everything in the pop culture sphere.

The Legend of Zelda as a specialist subject on Mastermind. Think I got 2.

So which series do you think you could do well with?

I think Metal Gear Solid would be the only one I'd have a reasonable chance with, though I'd have to do some research on the likes of the Portable Ops and Acid games if they were to be included, as well as the original Metal Gear series. If it could be kept to just the Metal Gear Solid games, I think I'd do alright.

That said I'd love to see what questions they could come up with for that. "Why does Quiet, the female sniper, only wear a bikini and tights? She breathes through her skin! Yes, correct. What nickname was given to Peter Stillman, the bomb expert with a prosthetic leg? Peg Leg Pete! Yes, correct. The Romanian villain who resembles a vampire has the nickname 'Vamp', what is the actual reason why he's called Vamp? He's bisexual! Yes, correct. Why did… buzz… I've started so I'll finish… Why did the President grab Raiden by the crotch and then act surprised that Raiden was actually male? Erm…. pass…"

What is the name of the secret best Metal Gear Solid game?

What is the name of the boss that uses a boomerang in metal gear solid ghost babel?

Plenty of nasty stuff to ask on that category.

I was surprised how tough those Zelda questions were. Fair play to the person that came up with them.

I could probably do Resident Evil, but that might mean I would finally have to play through 6!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,045 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

That's the thing. It takes so long to ask a question. As for MGS or Resident Evil, wouldn't the lore be really weird? The first question about the triforce Les to a false sense of security then started asking questions about things like Four Swords and other games that not many would've played. Would be like choosing Metroid and being asked about Federation Force.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,262 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

You could see him react when triforce heroes came up, a game nobody played because the central mechanic just didn't work.

And he got correctly called out for four swords and four swords adventure being two different games.

I imagine questions have to be worded in such a way to be an approximate length so that the amount of questions asked are the same for each contestant (depending on how long the contestants take to answer). Quiz shows tend to be pretty tightly adjudicated behind the scenes.

I think there's also the issue that your specialist subject has to be reasonably broad. For example someone could likely do 'The films of Christopher Nolan', but you probably couldn't just do 'The Dark Knight trilogy'. So yeah if you picked a game franchise, chances are you're opening yourself up to all games and spin-offs of that franchise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,045 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Someone was on recently whose specialist subject was the Friday Night Dinner TV series. So not that broad.

At least there were no questions about the CD-i games.

I'm finally getting near the end of Dragon Quest 3 and it's been quite educational. It really feels like the proto modern jrpg and there's so much in it that went on to shape modern Japanese RPGs. Like if you really think about it the game has the same story progress structure of a lot of JRPGs, even something like FF7 follows it to a tee. It's basically introduce the players to a small part of the world, open up the world map giving the player the illusion of choice but still being extremely linear before giving the player a boat and becoming completely open world and eventually a way to fly.

In fact I'd probably say that DQ3 is superior in some ways. Once the game world opens up with have 6 objectives to complete meaning you aren't searching the world for the next story trigger but constantly making progress of these objectives every time you visit somewhere new.

I will prob get slated heavily for this but I've tried to get into Red Dead Redemption 2 for the 3rd time over the last couple of weeks, and again.. I just can't get into it, it's slow bordering on boring and the horrible, archaic Rockstar shooting mechanics are tragic in this day in age.

I loved the first one back in 2010 but just can't get into this one.

Anyone else struggle with RDR2 or am I the only loser who didn't like the game?
