The Energia Axa deal is 17% cheaper than the new BWG offer for me. I'm a very heavy user with a heatpump & 2 EVs but its mostly night time.

I don't think Energypal includes the Energia penalty for "excess" usage. I did my own calculations but also tried Energypal for comparison and found the additional charge was not added.

energy pal isn’t perfect but it’s very good and the person that built it deserves a pat on the back imo

Send them a message with a link to the t&C's and they will probably add it.

Had that hassle a few years ago. Submit your reading to gas networks ireland instead a little earlier. https://www.gasnetworks.ie/home/gas-meter/submit-meter-reading/

I've gone with BWG Smart 24Hr fixed until 30/9/2026, same price as before except it's a smart plan. I received a welcome email:

Thank you for choosing Flogas Energy. We’re delighted to have you on board.

Your welcome letter, including your account details, will be sent via email within the next 14 days. There’s no need to contact us during this time, if we require any additional information, we’ll be in touch.

    Your Plan Details:

    • MPRN/GPRN: 1000xxxxx
    • Your Plan: Electricity (View Tariff Rate Card)
    • Your Offer: BWG Smart 24Hr 18 Month Fixed Energy
    • Offer Duration: 12 Months
    • Minimum Term: 12 Months
    • Payment Method: Direct Debit

Note duration and term say 12 months, but the rate card is 18 months.

    Quick tip

For anybody unsure if their contract with flogas ended last month or not, submit a meter reading to get a bill. When the bill comes, if it shows 2 different rates you're out of contract but if there's only one rate you're still in contract

Jesus I had a guy knock on my door yesterday evening asking me to switch to Electric Ireland, I'm already with Electric Ireland and I told him so, he became really rude and borderline aggressive telling me I wasn't that his handheld computer told him I wasn't!! He then discovered he was wrong and pissed off sheepishly…. If I was switching I definitely wouldn't be buying of him anyway

just wondering what others would do here. My choice is to renew with Flogas for the fixed rates or else go to Energia Smart Data plan with €75 cash back but take up a smart plan which would result in approx €70 saving over the Flogas deal for my usage. If Energias rates went up 10% Id still save €40 but not sure if thats worth it to activate the smart meter. So Im not too worried about a price increase as Im ahead to begin with.

    24.83

    c/kWh electricity day rate

    26.02

    c/kWh electricity peak rate

Are Energia the only one jacking up at peak time?

Peak time should be higher than the day rate. Lots of smart tariffs have a higher peak rate because energy is more expensive in that slot.

Had something similar with Airtricity a few years ago back when I was with them. He asked to see my proof that I was with them. I told him that's not information I share with somebody who calls to the door unannounced but he was quite adamant that he wanted proof

Maybe they do but at the same time I wouldn't trust any provider in this country to have that level of openness and honesty

Might be better to put the readings into the Gas Networks website directly:
    https://www.gasnetworks.ie/home/gas-meter/submit-meter-reading/

Same for electricity, put the reading into the ESB networks website:
    https://www.esbnetworks.ie/services/manage-my-meter/how-to-submit-your-meter-reading/submit-my-meter-reading

Just get a doorbell camera and don't answer the door to anyone with a clipboard.

it is a legal requirement i'm sure and the letter arrives about 60 days before contract end date

SSE sent me this last month

From 2 April 2025, we’re increasing our standard variable unit rates by 12.75%* for electricity and by 10.5% for gas. All applicable domestic Republic of Ireland gas and electricity customers will automatically have the increased rate applied to their bills

For anyone who has signed up to the "BWG Smart Dual Fuel 24Hr 18 Month Fixed Energy" plan, can you confirm the standing charge you got on the confirmation email they set you?

I realise it is a strange question, but they have changed the standing charge three times on the website now! From 257.37 to 331.33 and back to 257.37 again!

No, urban. And yes they changed the listed price of the urban standing charge on the website three times in the past few days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 898 ✭✭✭autumnalcore

Could be a JavaScript issue. On the detail page it has 257.38 for urban 24 hour and 331.33 for urban day night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,573 ✭✭✭beachhead

Urban day night quoted as e331.33 on here before.Or could it be rural. Can't remember

Under the Flogas BWG offer, is there a standard D/N rate without activating my smart meter?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 513 ✭✭✭The lips

There are two types of smart meters installed by the ESB. If you were on a legacy day/night rate when the smart meter was retrofitted you were given one that can still take the legacy day/night or 24 hour tariffs. Meter part number starts with RM105. RM105 allows you access to legacy 24hr tarrifs OR legacy day/night tarrifs.

If you were not on a day/night tarrif at time of retrofit or were a new install post the smart meter switch over date you got a smart meter part number starting RM106.

RM106 unactivated allows you access to legacy 24hr tarrifs ONLY. To get a day/night rate you have to activate the smart meter to avail of the cheaper night rate. Once activated you cannot ever go back to a legacy tarriff, Smart tarrifs ONLY from then on.

doesn't look like it. At this stage, i'm kinda resigned to activation of the meter.

I can't find the rural SC for the Energia Axa offer - anyone know what it is?

I resigned up to the BWG offer on a non smart day/night

I will say things seem to have improved greatly for smart meters versus last few years.

The biggest problem with smart meters when they first came out is that they only had time of use plans, there were no 24hour or d/n plans, which didn’t suit many people and in general the plans were uncompetitive.

It looks like that has changed a lot now with smart 24hour, D/N and time of use plans available from all suppliers and at rates similar to the non smart plans.
