At least there is a logic to these events, showing a lot of wind generation and yeah around midday wind and demand are about equal. The imbalance below is also dipping low. This happend again last week and showed a similar graph.

I wonder how much microgeneration solar (export)is in that, or even if they can measure it.

Maybe it just shows up as less demand

How do you get these rewards? Do they post vouchers to your home for each event?

We availed of that one this morning, but the sun was splitting the rocks, so all of our extra "turn up" energy came from the pv panels and the battery.

I don't know whether the ESB checks these things, but our power draw from the grid was zero, even though the wife was both ironing and using the oven!

Home users like us minimal impact..but maybe in a few years when we get more and more PV then yeah possibly.

I'd imagine where they get the biggest impact is from these large energy users who are on demand response schemes. A good few years ago ( about 15 years) ago I was involved for a local authority in a demand response scheme. Where we were paid a couple of grand a year (I forget but it was substantial enough maybe €10-15000 year) just to be on standy-by to cut consumption and ramp up consumption. We had a 1500 KVA connection for pumping water that where we had enough buffer to cut the pumping for a half hour. Back then it wasnt too much energy…but it was not enough…so it was cutting mostly. But we had a direct connection and they used to test us once or twice a year as well. You would need a lot of houses to be turning on dishwashers to use up 1500 kW! 😋

I hear big refrigeration warehouses can bump up and cut off consumption easy enough they have enough buffer again to cut for an hour or so or ramp up for an hour, does not make too much of an impact on them.

I got €12. Can I combine them? Or do I have to spend separately? I think I have €3 or €6 from last month too...

Most places will let you spend multiple at once at least.

I used a €6 and a €3 together in Halfords the other day no problem

Time is contagious, everyone is getting old.

I usually use them in Tesco self service tills, no real issues.

What is causing the turn up events? Sms says 'excess renewable generation'. There is little wind, rivers are low, is it solar input into grid - but at 9-11 rather than in afternoon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72,745 ✭✭✭✭L1011

All I can think of is that there'll be less business air conditioning load at this time of day.

I suspect some of this is testing to see what the response is rather than being due to a need. I wonder are they also going to ever actually compare to meter data - some people are saying Yes to get their reward when they did nothing; but others with generation and/or battery are actually making changes and there won't be anything to see

I have batteries and solar, there's nothing much I can do to draw more from the grid at the moment. I'm still answering yes mind.

Amazing I got one for 9-11am today - says there will be "excess renewable gen in my area (Kildare ). There is no wind so it must be solar or Turlough Hill ;-( .. But Solar won't peak till maybe 11 am - and as mentioned wind is below 200 MW (<5% of capacity) for the whole country this morning 9-12.

I really wonder who actually sends these and are they realistic ? Does anybody audit this?

Is there something funny going on to discredit DSM or is it just someone looking at a weather forecast picture.

Currently Your area = island of Ireland. In Donegal and got the same one

It's a pilot programme, I'd not worry about the specifics just yet

The time zones have definitely been regionalised before, although as I have two MPRNs I have no idea which region I'm considered as being "in". I always answer the Dublin-area one and not the Donegal one though.

The Pilot seems to be flying blind or maybe hiding the detail (ignores that 200 MW of countrywide wind and ~20% renewables on the grid is excess for a turn-up / turn-on event).

Possible explainer , when I check Eirgrid's System Margins Outlook I do see lots of excess "Thermal" generation today. Maybe they need to test stuff or even burn-off some Best Before fuel or whatever. ….

Just got a text, foe a turn up event tomorrow 9am to 11am , for Cork City

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 616 ✭✭✭idc

Same for Dublin, definitively not caused by excess solar 😂. Absolutely lashing rain ☔️here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 233 ✭✭millb

There is a bit of wind - maybe 2000 MW but the cold snap probably means DCs are using less energy - 2 of the 3 interconnectors were doing the usual importation of about 1000 MW this morning
