GoMo - SMS outside EU

    Hi All,

Just checking if anyone has some additional SMS outside of EU charges on their GoMo bills recently?

I seemed to have SMS to Saudi Arabia few months ago for 15c. Two months ago I seemed to have SMS to Ghana for 15c, and this month I have two text for 30c to Antarctica! 😕

I contacted GoMO and first agent tried to tell me it's for some apps I have on my phone and I agreed to pay for sending messages but he told me to google it to find out how to find these apps.. he disconnected the chat straight after, super professional.. The second agent told me it's a premium service but these are listed separately in the bill! I sent a complain to GoMo of course and waiting for their response.

But I thought I check with everyone here, just to see how many of us gets charged these with no explanation? or maybe I do have some apps permissions on and someone here had this issue and know exactly how to fix it so it never happens again? Can someone please help? Thank you everyone!

I do remember MMS! That old I am haha! but it would appear on the bill as MMS not Non-EU text..

They trying to tell me, it's an app that does it, the thing is, I don't use social media apps for a while now! and I'm much happier since! so I ask them which app? and they cannot pin point me, but nevertheless, if they charge me for something they have to know exactly what it is, isn't it? When I go to shop and buy stuff and pay for it, I know exactly what I am paying for! and here, should be the same rule applied? or am I missing something and the regulators allows them to "not know"?

So, you say, you also paid these foreign text, do you remember sending them..? 😉

@GKenn Checked my bill, it was € 0.21 for 3 SMS to the same number in Spain Sunday Jan 19 at 11.00am 19 days ago . Don't know why I used SMS as the contactee is on WhatsApp & FB. SMS is for some more ancient members of my tribe (We're all heading there 1 day)

On your phone settings, look for the permissions for SMS. There should be a list of apps that are permitted to use/access SMS without your knowledge. Some of them can be disallowed, but not all. Where to find them depends on your phone, but generally speaking, it's in Settings —> Permissions Manager —> SMS. It should read something like 2 of 4 apps allowed (in my case, I allowed my phone and my SMS app to access them, but I blocked google and another app) - if you click on SMS it should list them, the three dots at the top (or whatever) should also list the system apps in the background that have access to SMS.

Same here! My last two bills had SMS charges for messages to Vanuatu and Namibia. GoMo support are blaming my phone! I have an iPhone and never send an international messages that I know of at least!!?

@GKenn, do you have an iPhone? I'm asking so I can check the correct settings.

    Thanks,

    M

I have Gomo for years and get the odd MMS charge here and there. But never to a geographical location.

I'm with GoMo for day dot\right from the start. Because of all this I'm now going to go back and checking all my recent bills! I will bring this to the attention of ComReg if it turns out there are spurious SMS charges on my bills for SMS messages I never sent to foreign countries. If they are at this for everyone and adding two/three to everyone's bills that all adds up for their gain!

    Thanks,

    M

PS: I was told to email customercare1@gomo.ie which I've done….awaiting their reply, wonder how long it will take!?

Don't spend too long on the customer care channel, if they drag it out more than a few days, go the formal complaint route.

If GoMo are aware these SMS charges arise from other apps surely their system should cancel them. It's not as if the GoMo customer has sent the SMS.

Update: GoMo support came back to me.

    Hi M,

I have reviewed the account and can see the SMS that were sent. These would have been sent from the SIM and are shown on the network system so are valid. I understand you advised that you did not send these but there can be malware or apps that have access and can send SMS messages from the phone.

As a goodwill gesture I have credited the 60cent of charges from these 4 SMS in this instance but going forward any charges for SMS would be charged and wouldn't be credited.

    Kind Regards,

    A

Thanks Aaron. I can assure you 100% that there is no malware on my iPhone!!

Thanks for the credit on the 4 messages. If this keeps happening I’ll have to raise the issue further with ComReg.

    Kind regards,

Any one having problems receiving short text security codes on the GoMo network on an 086 number? I'm not receiving these codes from a number of providers such as Vodafone, VHI & Outsurance.

This is a fairly common issue when porting. Chances are that the routing isn't set correctly and the messages are still being sent to your previous network. Some people have had success with contacting support, while others have had to port back to their original network.

I should have explained that I've been on the GoMo network for several years & this problem has just developed.

I am not ported and on Eir rather than GoMo - but have the same problem. I spoke to Eir Customer Care - they know about the problem and are following up. It seems to be just affecting messages coming via IMS(4G/5G) from the short text providers. I switched off WiFi Calling, and changed my Mobile Network setting to 2G only, so as to force the messages to be sent directly to the mobile network. This works for me as a workaround for now until the root cause is fixed. You can change your network settings back after you have received the short-text message.

Following contact with GoMo the problem I was experiencing has been resolved.

Yes - it's working for me now also. It must have been fixed just now.

Waiting for my bill for March! If there are any SMS charges to foreign countries off to ComReg I go!

OK, got my bill today! There is an SMS charge to a number in Spain I don't recognise. My sister is the only person I know who lives in Spain, it's not her number showing on my bill and I never SMS her, only WhatsApp!!? Even stranger there are 003473286XY 11 digits in the number, but my sister's number has 0034605988XYZ 13 digits, is that strange to any of you?

    Thanks,

    M

PS: Should I try and ring the phone number from a landline and see if it goes through??

Have you tried searching for that number? It might bring up some clues. I wouldn't ring it, unless it were from a phone box in the '90s. Check also the time and date against the notifications, there may be something there. Also check your sms app permissions and block any app from using it except for the app itself.
