Is this the third or fourth attempt by the USA to acquire Greenland?

Ok, if you say so. I’m not sure enough to contradict you, but I honestly don’t remember anything like that being said during the campaign.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,333 ✭✭✭trashcan

And also, he’s lying. If himself and Trump were really concerned about self determination for the Greenlanders they would stf up about taking the place over.

It's amazing how you single out that line and bemoan it being "ignored" yet you're continuously happy to ignore a lot more egregious comments by Vance & Trump etc. Or even the fact that they've pulled this stunt out of thin air, masqueraded it as a 'security issue' and have travelled there in the midst of it all to further stir up consternation.

I'll take criticism from you on what is being ignored, along with your 1950's saccharine 'American life' , with the tiniest grain of salt.

If the self-determination ploy doesn't work Trump and team can move to plan B. He will stand at a podium and say something like the following.

"We are sending a military taskforce to Greenland for national security reasons.

Right now, the Greenlandic people are stockpiling weapons of woke destruction . The Department of Defense has compiled a short list of the larger threats, but no-one, except for me, knows the full extent of it.

    — Several thousand canisters containing liquid DEI.

    — Missiles topped with warheads containing not explosives but millions of LGBTQ+ books. We understand these could reach Arkansas within minutes, if fired.

    — Critical Race Theory drones.

    — Artillery that fires 105mm abortion pills.

    — Muslim balloons.

    — Atheist attack helicopters.

    — A 2000 foot tall Rosie O Donnell robot.

    — A Marxist militia comprising of 10,000 trained leftists, led by Hunter Biden. "

I was indifferent to Trump in his first term, can't say I thought highly of him but I considered it an anomoly and his overall term as relatively harmless.

But two months into this, and he's just such a complete sack of Cheeto-****. I can't even begin to process what his genuine behind the scenes end-game is with the illogical strategies of snuggling up to Putin, dumping on Ukraine, destroying European alliances, threatening annexation of Canada/Greenland, and so on.

The pathetic attention-seeking man-child Elon Musk as his mini-me-Himmler is just the cherry on the turd.

That’s fine- recollections may vary as they say- mine is perfectly clear.

In fairness, who could have known that a man who tried to overturn US democracy in his first term as president would then embrace dictatorial rule and dismantle US democracy in his second term? Apart from absolutely everybody?

Brought to you by the incompetents in the Democratic party. Useless.

MAGA - "Anything bad that happens is definitely Biden's fault somehow. I can feel it."

If Biden had been off the ticket earlier and Harris didn't run Trump would not be in office now.

The latest speeches from Trump and Vance about the future of Greenland and its security as a non-US entity is as clear an indication that they see there being no conflict between what Putin did in 2014 and again in 2022 in Ukraine and what they see as legitimate for them to do to Greenland.

It seems that unless there is a call from within the GOP to them both that an act of US military aggression is not permissible in an GOP administration and both men should be warned that, if necessary, the GOP will go to court to seek a restraining order against them from using US Federal military force against a country with whom the US has friendly relations. It should also be permissible for a US military person or persons to seek a similar legal order against Trump and Vance to block them from unlawful use of the US military against a non-belligerent near neighbour due to both Trump and Vance having some sort of paranoia over how they perceive neighbouring countries.

Who is the person you see as being the person who would have been on the Dem ticket for President back then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,026 ✭✭✭✭briany

It's easy to talk in hypotheticals. We cannot know what would have happened in that case. I can just as easily suppose the Democrats would have nominated the most bland candidate possible and still thrown the election away.

While I'd be a strong critic of the Democrats' generally anaemic response to Trump and MAGA, I'm not going to apportion the greater part of the blame to them on the situation America is in.

I was watching the (barely) sentient sack of human excrement that is Marjorie Taylor Greene throwing a fit earlier at the British reporter who was asking her about the Signal leak.

Of course, who's fault is it? Somehow Biden's. I actually groaned out loud. It's an absolute farce.

They have good performers like Andy Beshear, Josh Shapiro and Pete Buttigieg amongst others. They had options.

The Democrats made two big mistakes to my mind.

    1. They didn't act soon enough when it became clear Biden was no longer physically capable of taking on another term. The man could barely speak by the time the first debate took place and the Democrats were still defending him.
    2. By nominating Kamala Harris they put her in an impossible position because she had no good answer to the two most important questions; "what would you do differently"? and "what would you do better"?…she was the Vice President - what was she suppose to say except get tied up in knots?

She couldn't present a better/different vision without looking hypocritical. And, also, she just wasn't an inspiring figure to me. She was very "meh", average. There were better potential candidates.

That's why they lost in my opinion. They messed the whole thing up.

Trumps endgame is whatever Putin tells him it is.

For the moment it's Russian style shithousery...chaos, distraction, bullying rhetoric and bare faced lies.

The fact that the American political class and wider public have not only taken the bait but are also chewing on the hook with relish, is the biggest worry for me.

They're enjoying the chaos Trump is deploying. They see it as his opening salvo in a new cold war and an era of US worldwide dominance. In their blinkered world view, this will bring an economic boom that raises the standard of living across the US. They're wrong of course, but it could be a long night waiting for that particular penny to drop.

I hope the wider western world have learned the lessons of the past and stand firm against the onslaught of an autocratic regime . It'll take all of the EU, UK, Canada, Australia and any other like minded nations to put the block on a new wave of US imperialism.

And I swear to God, I never thought I'd be typing any of the above in relation to a US president. We're through the looking glass people.

Are we going to have to listen to this for the next four years?

Everything that goes wrong in the US with this clown shoes party in control is actually the fault of the previous administration?

How about a simpler 'what if'.

What if the Republicans didn't go with Trump? Could they perhaps be at fault?

    Apparently not.

Biden could have died on stage at the debate and he would still have been a better choice. I totally agree that he should have given way to a younger candidate from the start, but the people who voted for Trump are the ones responsible for this mess.

Not an option for the Republicans because Trump owns the party now and could light up any representative he likes on social media and that would likely end their careers.

Worth noting the US military has not only the power to, but the duty to refuse to carry out an attack against a friendly nation.

The Nuremberg Principles, established after World War II, emphasize that "just following orders" is not a valid defense for committing atrocities or illegal acts. This precedent was codified in U.S. military law through the UCMJ, which states that disobedience of an unlawful order is permissible.

Trump of course is liable to fire commanders until he finds one who will carry out his wishes. But that won't be easy. Trying to justify any kind of military operation on any other member of NATO would not stand up for 5 minutes in any later tribunal.

Money is any item or verifiable record that is generally accepted as payment for goods and services and repayment of debts, such as taxes, in a particular country or socio-economic context.

Stocks do rise and fall. so lots of theoretical values.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,928 ✭✭✭thatsdaft

Us stocks been only going one way since Trump got into whitehouse

6 trillion gone in as many weeks

In a few months this will trickle down into a deep US recession

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,026 ✭✭✭✭briany

I expect Trump is setting up for something like, "Hey EU, I'm putting these tariffs on you, but I might take them off if we work something out on Greenland. I'm thinking first dibs on mining contracts and preferential access to your territorial waters."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,052 ✭✭✭✭Leroy42

Removing Biden wasn't an option for the Dems as he was within his rights to seek a 2nd term. Can you imagine the uproar from the GOP if Biden had announced sooner he wasn't running or someone else openly challenged him?

But no. In your mind the GOP had no choice but the Dems should have acted sooner.

Tell me. Do you remember whether Jan 6th attack on the capital happened before or after Bidens terrible debate performance. Because surely that was the time to dump Trump?

Trump, his backers, Musk, the GOP and if course all those that voted for him are to blame.

What is worse is that even now, when it is clear how awful Trump is, you still get so many that can't bring themselves to admit it.

By self determination he means voting to leave Denmark to either join the US or find themselves in a security position that they effectively join the US.

You cannot possibly take what this charlatan says at face value.
