I haven’t done mine yet. The only part I’m really worried about is the written exercise, can anyone give me an insight if it was difficult? Thanks and best of luck to everyone!

I did mine yesterday ! So glad to read others ran out of time on the maths too! My written exercise was an unusual one about a member rather than a crime or anything ! Any one have any idea how long till results?

Just on the results, I got mine 16 days after the closing date last year.

    Batch 1 2024

So don't expect results until middle of April.

Well done to everyone who has done them so far and the best of luck to you all!

I'm going to do the tests on Friday but bricking it at the numerical one tbh, as I keep failing the pretests I paid for.

I was passing the practise tests but then started doing 20 minute/20 questions tests and I'm failing them as there's so much information to absorb with the questions and I just cant seem to get the amount of calculations done that's needed to answer the majority of questions in time.

How long are people spending on one question before moving on? Also, if you're coming up on time with 5 questions left, are you just guessing the remaining 5 or leaving them blank, as my practise course says you shouldn't guess as it looks impulsive and like you're a risk taker, so could reflect badly on your score.

The only thing that keeps my hopes up is that I did the numerical test for the EO civil service role last year and did pretty well in it, however I imagine these tests are harder than those ones and I guessed a few of the answers too.

    😬

My advice for the numerical one is that if you cant figure it out first time around…skip it and come back if you have time. I spent a little too long on a question and the last three I seen were actually ones I had practiced but my time ran out. I could have done 3 in the time I spent trying to resolve one

I only managed 16 but I was confident in 15 being right. I think the time given was very unrealistic for the amount in the maths but hopefully they would rather see it done right and not finished than just guessing under pressure

Seeing a lot of people fretting here over the numerical tests. As someone who has done very well on loads of these over the years (CO/EO/HEO in civil service exams) this is the advice I'd give.

Work as quickly and accurately as you can. Common sense and logical thinking generally does the job.

They're not overly difficult and they are generally made that you won't get them all answered. Usually you only need to reach a certain standard to pass and it doesn't matter how well you do above the pass standard for order of merit standings.

With regard to blind guessing, this does not work against you at all as there is no negative marking. So if you are near the end of time and you've a few left to get done it won't harm you at all guessing.

The main marks for order of merit will be based on the verbal reasoning and the report. You may be questioned on your report in the interview in the next stage also.

    Best of luck.

Did anyone have an off TV in the room where they did the assessments that appeared during the room scan? Worried that this may contravene the one screen, one device policy.

I had a TV in my room, but it was switched off, but it was switched off. I don't imagine they'll be that fussy.

No this won't be taking into account. It is only if a monitor is connected to the laptop via HDMI. You'll be fine.

The webcam takes random shots of you to make sure its you thats doing the test and the audio is recording you to make sure you arent talking to somebody, your hand wasnt over your mouth and you werent staring at the tv or away from the screen like your attention was focused on it hence you have nothing to worry about.

did anyone find the verbal test a bit tricky at all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55 ✭✭Dubman7

Is there anyone here who did their tests and paid for the GardaIP tests and did the numerical practice tests? If so, did you find the actual test harder or easier? I find the practice tests very difficult and cant seem to get passed a score of 9. I'm hoping they're extra hard and the actual exam will be easier!🤞

verbal grand, scenarios grand, questionnaire grand. have multiple pairs of jocks ready for the numerical 👍

    I Second this! My god....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 nicola023b

The maths was the only one. The rest ok. The verbal was sometimes a bit. I left it did the rest then came back. Everything's crossed but i don't have high hopes🙉🙉

The written part is ok. Once you start writing it's fine and you've 30mins. Tha maths🙉🙉 whole different story. Good luck x

Just did the numerical test and scenario test just there. Scenarios were ok but I have a bad feeling about the numerical ones. I spent too long on some questions and didn't manage to even finish it. Actually kicking myself that I didn't follow my initial plan and pondered too long on questions as I think I could have gotten the last 3 but ran out of time.

Could be very tight and have the next few weeks to overthink and worry about it now!🤣😫

I wouldn't worry too much about not finishing the maths. I, myself like others, did not finish the entire test. I had 4 questions left, but the ones I did I'm pretty certain I got them right. I have been led to believe that most of the tests are checking that you have a good baseline level of education. Like someone previously mentioned it's designed to weed out the guesses and chancers. I'm sure you did well. Good luck.

DDid anyone lose connection at any point? I did and closed everything out and opened back up and I was able to start where I left off. However, it said on the material sent out before hand that if this happens and you get asked to resume, decline it. I never got that? So I just continued on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55 ✭✭Dubman7

My concern is that I guessed a few answers (some educated guesses), so it's the unknown that has me worried. I think knowing the pass mark too would be helpful as if it's 40%, I'd be more at ease. Damn aptitude tests!😄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10 pintofharp213

surely is around that if they’re so desperate for people as they seem to be. I don’t know why they would turn away hundreds of people who did good in components relevant to being a guard like verbal and written etc but may have done below average in a maths test that has no relevance to the job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55 ✭✭Dubman7

It's all a process of elimination though I suppose, so the tests are there to cut numbers in half I guess. It is what it is and just something that needs to be overcome. Not sure if it will count towards your OOM score though, so just passing it should suffice I'd imagine.

Also, did anyone else not start the test straightaway after the room scan? I did the room scan and then opened the test page straightaway but there was a page to read before actually starting the test, so I'd say it took me about two minutes from completing the room scan and reading the instructions on the test page, to starting the actual exam. Would they be pretty strict on this?

The problem is they can only train 800 per year, there was 6700 applied this year and 6300 last year, so nearly 13, 000 applicants for 1600 places over the 2 years.

Yeah true, think I just still have some PTSD left over from school over maths and haven’t had to use it through college so it feels like I’m 15 all over again 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 251 ✭✭Marty1476

any advice on the written exam? what scenario did you get?. It's the last for me to complete but had to leave to drop everything to get to a family situation, all others were completed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10 pintofharp213

that’s me all done, just finished off the maths there. It wasn’t as bad as I thought (heart was absolutely pumping though) still left a few blank or didn’t know but I’d say I defo got over the pass standard hopefully 🤞

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55 ✭✭Dubman7

Great to hear @pintofharp213 and best of luck. I just finished there too and found the verbal test to be trickier than I expected. The writing report wasn't too bad but I got a bit of a freight at the end as the timer went down to zero and the page glitched for a second and then gave me another minute, but the word count was removed so I just hope there was no technical fault with it😬

To everyone that is done, congrats that it's over and best of luck. To the people still doing them, best of luck and you got this!👊

Felt the maths went alright. Not sure tbh. I did as much calculations as I could but the guessed a few. Found it hard.
