Wonky image display on Lenova laptop

Anyone know what is causing images on laptop to look like attached. It's not actually a major issue to me as I use it mainly for stuff that doesn't need accessing many sites with images but on FB for example it won't play little stories/videos if you click on them either. Took this screenshot from DM page as it's a good example of how it would display, sometimes if you are scrolling down a page with images like a news page after a while the upper images fill in properly but not always. Will be taking it to repair shop when I get a chance but just would like to know how serious this is!

No, I'm afraid I'm a fairly basic user! Wouldn't even have occured to me I'm afraid, just use it as it's set up with Chrome I presume.

That looks to be broken video decoding. Try the same page in another browser, and that'll show whether it's browser specific, or something a bit broader, such as your GPU drivers, which may need to be updated.

Ok I tried a different one and they are still the same.

go into lenovo support and get the display drivers in there for your device

    https://support.lenovo.com/ie/en

    7

or if you have lenovo vantage app installed from microsoft store , try system update in that

Tried Microsoft Edge as suggested and used the DM page again and while it flashes up instantly with the garbled image it settles down almost immediately to the correct image. When I scroll down the page far more pics are correct with just the occasional one a bit odd so definitely better if not exactly perfect.

What's the diagnosis now? I'll have a look at that display drivers thing later, have to get going now!

If it's affecting all browsers, then it's something with the underlying operating system and the shared parts of the software, such as video codecs.

First and safe step, update your video drivers. Lenovo may have them, but they could be pretty old. OEM's tend not to update them for any long time on their own sites.

You can find out what your GPU is by opening Device Manager, and checking under display adapters. Probably something mentioning nVidia/AMD/Intel and some numbers. After that you can go to the GPU makers page to get the most current ones.

This bit is safe, and can bring other benefits, bugfixes etc, so try that next before trying to mess with anything else.

Did that last night and while it seemed to improve it immediately, not perfect but better, I dont think I imagined it, tried a few sites! But it then reverted back again to same way it was even on different browsers.

Just checked, it says it turns on at 20%. Now mind you I have never looked at that before in the 5 yrs I have this laptop so nothing has changed in those settings.

As I have turned it on now this evening the displays are better, not perfect but much better than they were, whether they will deteriorate as the evening goes on who knows but something has definitely improved!

Actually in light of previous post I wonder is the improvement since last night disimproving again when battery gets down to 20%? I will keep an eye on that tonight and check regularly.

do you not use it plugged in ? - if you using it not plugged in your always going to be in power saving profile ?

I don't have it plugged in when it's fully charged, not always at home with it. Does anyone keep their laptop plugged in to use, is that not the point of a battery so you can carry it around with you.

I have changed nothing in the way I use this laptop so whatever is wrong with it is not as a result of changing any settings, it is as it has been since day one. I had to google the suggestions given helpfully in previous posts and managed to do them but the workings of this thing are not my area of expertise, just basic usage really.

I'd try a live linux distribution, might help to determine if it's a hardware fault or an issue with windows drivers

the idea is to have it plugged in when you can to save the life of the battery . and when its plugged it it runs everything faster and in better quality

ok, it doesn't seem to be making any difference to the images whether it's plugged in or not

ok that's double dutch to me even with googling 🙂, think I'll give up now and take it to the repair shop. Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions and help.
