Ioane was brilliant at times today. Forde seems to be reading his intentions really well too. If we can build a good partnership between Forde and Gavin then we'll have a midfield that can tear teams apart. Throw Bundee into any well structured attack and he'll make the players around him look better.

I'd say that Gavin will learn a lot from the review of this game He had positional issues at times - both in attack and defense - and I think it probably caused uncertainty in the back three.

I wouldn't even be too critical of Ioane for the tries in the first half. The kick was poor but our lack of tactical awareness as a team was far worse. We're just an inept side when it comes to resetting our game when attacking fails. Better coached teams have strategies they use to get out of those situations. He was hung out to dry by the defence inside him and an O'Conor dog leg for another try.

Can't fault the heart shown by the end but that's a season-ender of a result in terms of the URC. Ospreys were there for the taking and we just conceded too many soft trys.

Thought the bench changed the game. Lads like Dowling, the two props settled us a lot and Devine loosened up the aggressive Osprey line. Bolton's injury was the losing of the game though. Completely lost our heads moving Ioane about. Do we really need a 6-2 split just to have Dave O'Connor on the bench?

I genuinely believe we have a top 8 team with a better coaching setup. I'd have been delighted to see the current ticket, especially a club legend like Mul, succeed but it's not gonna happen.

Can we get a medical joker for defense coach?

Can't wait until JJ is gone he's really not very good.

Despite the calamity of tonight 2 points just about keeps us in with a small chance.

Chance to win Challenge Cup now, this team is able.

Forgot about the league our schedule made it nearly impossible till Ulster home loss (Saffers away)

Add Bealham/Aki/Hansen, J.Murphy for D.Murray (slow today), Prendergast for J.Murphy, Dooley probably, Devine/B.Murphy for Blade, Dowling and no D.O'Connor in a normal 5-3 split, with Gavin/Cordero on the bench and Forde covering 10 (no JJ)

    Which means

    1 Buck

    2 Heff

    3. Beal

    4 J.Murphy

    5 J.Joyce

    6. Prendergast

    7.SHL

    8 Boyle

    9. B.Murphy if back/Devine

    10 Ioane

    12. Aki

    13 Forde

    11. Bolton if back/Cordero

    14 Hansen

    15 P.O'Connor

    16 DTMartin

    17 Dooley

    18 Aungier

    19 Dowling

    20 Jansen

    21 Blade

    22 Gavin

23 Cordero (Carty if Bolton is absent making Cordero start)

With those imputs we'll score 40 again brillantly and only conceed 30! 😜

Again, Connacht lost a winnable match due to the selection mistaking. the failure1 6-2 sprit formation. D.O'Connor didn't perform (nothingat all) the plus impact and SHL could fight until the end of the game.Or if there was N.Murray? he could aime to steal in some Line out situations. Due to 6-2 split, Connacht had to use Hanrahan at 10 who could not run at the average speed and made deadly two or three mistakes the important scenes. I suppose that Wlkins or Ruane didn't want to get last 8th positition in this league.

I like your team but if we are going 5-3 then it'd be Mullins for me over Cordero.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,782 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I said before the game that Hanrahan shouldn't be there. Forde can play 10 in a pinch and he's better than JJ.

What we needed was someone who could cover centre and full back.

Jennings offers more IMO. I like how Finn Tracy plays, lots of involvement, good basics, nose for the try line. Think he could do well.

What were people's impressions of Illo and Lasisi? I thought they did well, although the instability in the scrum meant that we got a couple of free kicks where I was more interested in how they would scrummage.

Also want to say that I loved the movement in the back line yesterday, think we have a very exciting group of young players.

The obvious problem remains lack of a place kicker. Yesterday we had a penalty inside Ospreys half at the end which would have been within range for most teams - we went for the corner instead. We were also perfectly positioned for a drop goal attempt and did not take it. Ok, one can argue that both were justified in an attempt to win rather than draw but, I'd have preferred a draw than a loss.

Himself and Murphy should be picked for the Irish tour this summer.

The first 15 minutes though, pace, power and accuracy. We would be very difficult to live with if we could become defensively sound and switch on that attack mode at key times.

Forde was super yesterday on both sides of the ball.

Interesting to hear the post match interview with Tucker. He seemed to take offence to the 5 minute spell before ht being criticised. Of course he wants to defend his players but this has happened numerous times with Connacht and 3 games in a row we have gone from a strong position to a complete capitulation in a short spell.

The interviewer William Davies is an inoffensive character. It's not like a Tony O'Donoghue style reporter prodding for a reaction. Disappointing response to say the least

Anyone know where I could get 1 ticket for castlebar match v munster? 12 of us now going, I got 11 tickets the day they went on sale.

I haven't heard it but I'll give him a free pass on this one. Wilkins who is head coach, primary selector, and coaches the defence wasn't there through illness. Tucker was left to deal with the mess and talk to the media afterwards. There was zero chance he was going to do anything other than defend his players.

Devine is the best scrum half atm

Was out of the country for the weekend, should I even watch the highlights of that game or better off ignoring them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,159 ✭✭✭KBurke85

I'd watch, in fairness there was some nice tries scored. Equally there was some horrible ones scored

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,672 ✭✭✭testtech05

Just caught up on the highlights myself, the defending for some of Ospreys scores was not fit for u14s. Criminal stuff. We wont win many games if we continue like that but then somehow managed to get themselves back into it with some nice scores and probably will be disappointed after getting back to 3pts down with 11 mins left that they couldn't push on.

1 thing i noticed was right at the end the ball was slapped back/out of the ruck by a Ospreys player and full time whistle blown after they kicked it dead. Id imagine in normal time it was something which the TMO would surely have to check and maybe lead to a chance at the draw.

I think completely reshuffling the backline was a big contributor to the worst of the defensive lapses. Forgoing an outside back on the bench in favour of 4 minutes from Dave O'Connor was an absolute farce of a decision. It's not like it was a difficult situation to foresee, that was Bolton's third time going off injured in the first half in eight starts this season.

Hopefully having a senior coach with an fresh perspective contributing to selection decisions will be a help next season.

The question for me here is, had the ruck formed before the player slapped the ball, and did the ref think the player had his hands on the ball before the ruck formed.
I think the player made the ref think he had latched onto the ball and when it squirted back on his side she believed he had just passed it back after winning it.
The player was the first to the ball so he was entitled to go for it with his hands until the ruck formed.

A TMO review may have said he missed the ball, the ruck then formed and then he reached for it, which is a penalty as I understand it.
It was a very quick piece of skill from the player to give him some credit. That probably would get missed by most refs.

During the match I said that most women refs are very good but that this one was very poor.

Murray Kinsella is reporting that Tucker remains in charge this weekend while Wilkins remains on sick leave.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,159 ✭✭✭KBurke85

Why not just say the ref was poor. What does it matter if it's a man or a woman?

I get the feeling that the illness in question is mutual consentitis and the medics are just arguing about the size of the cash suppository.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 885 ✭✭✭Zeugnis

Hopefully it's not too serious, but it's pretty unusual to hear of a coach on sick leave.

I've been critical of Connacht's development under his tenure but wish him nothing but the best personally. Get well soon, Pete.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,879 ✭✭✭b.gud

That's how I read it too initially but when you go into the article he specifies that it's unclear if Wilson will be back for the weekend so it's still possible that he may be back for the match

I sincerely hope that Pete isn't experiencing any health problems, but my reading of the article is that Kinsella is being deliberately vague to avoid commenting any more than he needs to. Journalists rely on coaches, players, and other IRFU sources. The good ones don't like to unnecessarily step on people personally if they can avoid it. The phrase "after being granted sick leave in recent weeks" is not how you talk about someone you expect to be on the sidelines soon.

I hope this is just a case of him negotiating an exit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,782 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Because I was surprised to see a poor female referee. I've been impressed with all of them to this point.

Tucker has been heavily linked with a move away so I think it's unlikely he'd be given the reigns of this was any more than a short term thing.

Must say I really didn't like the Comms from Tucker and Joyce after the game, a lot of mentions of "freak tries" when scores like that against us are basically the norm at this point so at some stage we need to accept that these are not anomalies, we just can't defend. Fiona Coughlan on RTE said we were lazy in defence and she was spot on. The obvious one was where no one bothered to fill in at fullback or chase the Ospreys kick through but there were a lot of times our positioning and scramble defence was not up to it.
