Speeding Ticket

Apologies if in the wrong place.

I arrived from a long trip, quite tired, and picked up my car at the mechanic. On the way home, I assumed the road between Castlebar and Westport had a 100 km/hr speed limit, but mindful it was dark and I was tired I was going a bit slower at 90ish. I was flashed by another car but didn't comprehend the significance. Yep.

Seconds later, I drove over a hill and a camera van was sitting on the side. No worries, I thought, I'm going slower!! But I was curious so picked up the phone and Maps showed the limit there is 80. Oops. It's been 2 weeks and nothing in the post. Can I sleep soundly or should I wait longer?

My last citation was 13 years ago. Also an oops moment: I thought I saw the unrestricted speed limit sign in an area I'd never been before in the UK and was slowly speeding up. Turns out I was wrong and ran into a police car speeding trap around the corner. Despite being super polite and explaining my mistake, I still got the ticket. That was also after some 10 years or so.

My previous ticket was outright terrible and, yet a bit lucky too. I was driving to uni (in the US) and another young driver pulled up alongside going faster. Feeling smug (and young), I sped up and was soon doing 100 mph. The limit there was 65, I think. Just before a turn, the other car turns off. Since the turn looked doable I played safe and slowed to 80. After the turn, a CHP car was waiting. Incidentally, I worked for the local police department at the time and was super worried about losing my job as a parking officer (it was a lot of fun to drive a Crown Victoria). But nothing came of it. I just got a ticket for 75mph I think. Pretty harmless. If he had seen me at 100mph, the policy was arrest on the spot.

    1. What's this got to do with emergency services?
    2. You had stopped to pick up your phone, right?

    1. I'm curious how the camera vans work.
    2. My car sometimes won't show the map on the screen, so I use the phone standing on the bottom of the dashboard. I'm getting a new car this week which will hopefully solve this.

The person sets it up and then sits back and reads a book or has a coffee. The system records the speed of every vehicle passing.

When the shift finishes they transfer the file to Thurles gardai station where traffic fines are managed.

A garda sets parameters and checks all vehicles above whatever speed they have decided on (within a certain level) and issues the ticket.

just to add to the above , the file of vehicles going over the speed limit is sent (un-amended) to gardai. The guy in the van cant ignore or favour any vehicle. When I worked for the ambulance service there would be the occasional phone call to our manager from some ambulance dept (Kilkenny or Waterford, I think) when one of the vehicles would go over the limit. The manager would then find out who was driving and have words. It is not an offence for emergency vehicles to go over the limit (or break any rules of the road - except drink/drug driving and dangerous driving) , but the operational manager may not like it and you will have to explain yourself. And if it happens often …. Well, the driver is the one that gets the points , not NAS .

There are no points. The driving of an ambulance is exempt from speeding legislation and as such there can be no prosecution, regardless of the frequency of exceeding the posted speed limit.

It is open to the employer to discipline the driver if the particular circumstances warranted it.
